Do forums still have any SEO value?
-
Hi All!
I want to know what people think about having forums on their sites. Do you still find value on these, or are they mostly a waste of resources? Would it be better to use facebook's registration plugin or something along those lines?
Any other thoughts or suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Margarita

If you have the time to run a forum, go for it. If not, then find someone who will or don't do it at all. Also, a more important question would be, what is the purpose of starting a forum? I don' t know what FB's paugin has to do with a forum. Are you trying to get registrations and or subscriptions? Are you trying to create backlinks from the forum to your own site like people do when they try pointing links from their blogs to their homepage hoping it will rank higher?

Thank you for your comment, Dan! Yes, I would love to hear if anyone has any good suggestions as far as platforms go.

My belief is that forums are great! This Q&A is a great example - I remember hearing that moz's traffic increased quite substantially after adding it.
I think the trick to a forum is getting the right platform. And getting some seed members is important, as well as moderators.
If anyone has good platform to recommend from an SEO standpoint, that'd be great, I don't have any direct experience in that regard.

SEO Terms Defined
I am having a really hard time clearly defining this for folks, I am hoping for some help here. Directory Websites: sites such as www.abcdirectory.com, these are typically lower quality manual submission websites with little user interaction Citation Sites: These are websites with business location listing such as Manta.com or yellowpages.com and involve locations with no links but the citations are valuable to ranking Local Search Sites: These are sites like Google Places, Yahoo Local, Yelp, etc and they sometimes offer reviews and user interaction, and are a hybrid local/social SEO component, you can create listings on these sites but if you want them to appear in search you need interaction with the page/listing.

Thinking of trying a SEO Badge Widget project... any advice?
What are some best practices for launching a Badge program? I've been researching this for a large brand... they feel they want to have these badges to promote certain blogger partners within a niche. However, we have no way to "Rank" the bloggers... so it's an arbitrary factor, IMO. What are some of the hooks that other successful badge programs have used? Is there a definitive post around here with suggestions? I'm really on ground zero and have been tasked to execute on this and really seem to be flying blind. Any guidance or suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

Is Tumblr difficult to Optimize? Is Tumblr bad for SEO?
To All, I love Tumblr as a social media marketing tool and blogging platform, especially for niches/brands with strong visual content possibilities. But I've never had much luck in getting good rankings or even getting some pages/posts to index. I've come across many blog posts like this one: http://danzambonini.com/tumblr-seo-and-why-i-moved-to-wordpress/ But is Tumblr really bad for SEO? I mean some folks who know a lot more than me(like Wil Reynolds and Jon Cooper) run Tumblr blogs, so it can't be that bad, right? Any tips or guides on how best to optimize Tumblr blogs would be great. Thanks, Jon

For better SEO I understand I should be using Google+, but under what identity?
It appears one way to rank more highly is by using Google+. But should I start to build a community myself or as my company? I have a good Twitter following under my own name, which links to my company page and a facebook page (for my business). I much prefer to be a face on social media than hide behing a logo, but am faced with a dilemma and not sure where to begin: Will Google recognise the relationship between me and my business if I set up an account under my own name? Primarily it's my business I want to promote, so from an seo perspective it seems should I use Google+ as my business, but I really dislike 'corporate' social media?

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Is there value in a presence on them?
I have a client (professional practice) whose father is a marketing professor. He is pushing the client that he should have a professional page on social sites. While I believe having FB likes, shares, Tweet links, +1, etc. on the page, I really am ambivalent about building pages specifically for social media sites.

How would you determine the value of a Facebook fan? Not just a Facebook referral, but an actual fan of your business or website. Is there a set of best metrics or a particular model that you suggest?

Does the Facebook Share button still exist?
Hi everyone, I'm reading everywhere about the Facebook 'Share' being more powerful than the Facebook 'Like'. Just yesterday, there's a post on the SEOmoz blog about Facebook Shares http://www.seomoz.org/blog/plus-one-adoption-rates-and-social-sharing-statistics But I thought the Share button was replaced by the Like button? http://mashable.com/2011/02/27/facebook-like-button-takes-over-share-button-functionality/ All references to the Share button now point you to Facebook's Like button developer page. So if we want more SEO value, where can we get the Share button from? Or do we have to make do with the Like button from now on?
