Setting up a domain for a future site
-
Hi there,
That may be a bit of a silly question to ask, but we've setup a new domain for an existing site.
While the site is in the making, the site owners wants to already start promoting the new URL on stationeries etc.
Hence, we need to setup the new URL so that it forwards to the site, but so that Google doesn't give it the history of a secondary (less important) domain. What is the best way to do this? Currently we've put in a 301 redirect, but will that bear no future consequences on the SEO of the site, when the site is moved to this new domain, and the old domain is 301 redirected.
Thanks,
SEOeclipse

I agree with Dejan SEO - I'd 302 the new to old right now, then 301 the old to new when launched

If I understand the question correctly you want to temporarily point people to the old domain while you wait for the new domain site to be launched and stay there permanently.
If the above is correct then solution is:
pre-launch: setup 302 from newdomain.com to olddomain.com
post-launch: remove 302 and setup 301 from olddomain.com to newdomain.comThis way people who visit the new domain from stationery and printed material will go to the old domain and still get the content they expect while Google will be informed this change is only temporary. After the new site is launched you break the temporary redirect and setup a permanent redirect directive towards the new domain and new site.

From what you are saying here, you have a site XYZ.com that the domain name will change for once a new site for XYZ.com is developed. You will not be running two sites once the new site XYZmodified.com is up. Your concern is that any low ranking from Google for XYZ will be visited upon XYZmodified.com?
Assuming that the old site has no real negative history with Google and your new site is going to be better optimized, etc. I would think you would want at least to start with some of the ranking of the old site as you build links to the new. You will want to insure that the canonical points to the correct url once the new site is up and the old is down. In the interim the 301 redirect should take your customers for the new domain to the current without a problem.
PS Based on what I have seen in the Q and A with SEOmoz, we are all learning daily, there are no silly questions.

Does my site just need a tweak, or should it be rebuilt from the ground up?
My wedding photography website has grown organically over the last 4 years or so.

Each year it's been fiddled with, changed, tweaked, prodded - in short it's been mucked about with a lot.
To the point now where I think it's become a hodge potch of mucky code (theme installed on theme in stalled on theme and numerous plugins) and no real 'structure' to it. At the moment it hovers around #12 for my main area of focus - people looking for a wedding photographer in Essex, England. So 'wedding photographer Essex'. I try to write blog posts regarding venues in Essex where I've photographed weddings. Despite trying to follow best practice, and with weak/low competition, these posts very rarely crack top 10. Last year when I was top 2 for wedding photographer Essex I was victim of a spam link attack. At the time I asked for advice and was told not to worry as Google didn't count these links. Now I'm feeling that along with the bloated website, lack of proper site architecture and other little issues, these links are contributing to restricting my pages from ranking in top 10 spots. Backlinking, while always helpful, doesn't seem to play a major role when trying to rank for venue related searches according to backlink reports on competitors. I'm thinking that it might be an idea to rebuild the site and content from the ground up. This time with a proper site structure in place and conforming to best practice. Obviously this is probably the most extreme course of action. Or does my site just need a little TLC to get it ranking better?
The site in question is:

Keyword rich domains - Which are the best domain extensions for ranking in the UK other than .com or .co.uk
Hey there, In the absence of getting a keyword rich .com or .co.uk domain am wondering how influential .info, .org, .net domains (or any others) are in comparison? Does anyone have any comparison info to share please?

Domain
Hello Team, I purchased a domain that's been around for a long time and I have built some decent pr to it. However, when I Google the domain name/future company name VIP Real Estate, it doesn't appear anywhere. Could it be that the domain name has a penalty? Thanks!

Site-wide keyword density
A colleague of mine was saying that he has been able to get top ranking for a high traffic term by using variations of that head term on multiple pages that are associated with the main page. For example,he would optimize a landing page for the high traffic word "Construction." He would then build pages under this landing page that are optimized for variations of this word: "Construction facts," "Industrial Construction Companies," "Construction Resource Allocator" etc. His theory is that the subpages add credibility with spiders that the root page is the best for that root page. This doesn't seem like it would work, but I'm curious as to what other people think.
