Links to Product pages
-
Hello all,
I am still rather new to SEO and learning a lot every day.
I do have a question.
On our product search result pages (example http://shop.ferguson.com/search/bathroom-lighting)
It is currently set up so the image, text, price etc of a product is linking to that product page. Our question is, if we were to link the image and the product name - will this be seen as two links to the same page? Is this a bad thing having multiple links to the same page?
I searched around to see how other ecommerce sites have similar pages setup and it seems they link the image and also the product name, and the description is not click-able, which allows a user to "Highlight" the text (this is not possible on ours)
Which would be to correct approach for SEO as well as User Interface, the way we have it set up, or by going with the method of the question I asked,
Thank you for any information on this!

As far as we know, Shane is right - multiple links to any Page B from Page A basically get ignored. Personally, I don't think that the link from the product # is very obvious to users, but it shouldn't harm SEO.
The only minor issue is that the second set of anchor text also probably gets ignored. So, Google sees this links as being on the product name (since that comes first). That should be fine, but it's just something to consider.

Would we have to bother put "no follow" on the repeated links or not even worry about this?
-
Thank you
Yes, it would be for user experience.
We just want to make sure doing it the new way wouldn't penalize us in anyway. Thanks again

Hi,
Maybe an Associate can put in the WB Friday where Rand went over how Google sees duplicate links on a page.
But I believe the basic concept was that the first link on any given page is the only one that is "recognized"
Example if i have a site about blue widgets targeting the keyword Blue Widgets....
"Hi, I love my site about Blue Widgets[LINK www.bluewidget.com] I think we make the best Blue Widgets_[LINK www.bluewidget.com]_ in the WORLD!!!!"
Both anchor texts above link to www.bluewidget.com, so only the first would count the other is redundant and would be ignored by Gbot.
SO
If you are integrating more links to attempt to gain clout with search engines, then this is a lost effort, but if you are doing it for navigation or user experience then this is completely fine in my opinion.

Which page will rank higher, my main article or the sub article linking from it?
Hi all, Can you help me figure this one out? I'm currently creating content for my website and I very badly want to know which page will rank higher in Google, my main article that has some keywords that are and links to my sub-article, or my sub-article which is optimized for those keywords? I will demonstrate with an example since I'm not sure my question is clear: If I have an article that talks about different kinds of candy and it links to a sub-article that will elaborate on specific candies like a mint candy ,which page will rank for mint candies. Until today I believed that if my sub-article which is linked from my main-article will rank for mint candies since it gets the support from my main article.Lately when experimenting this I found my thoughts to be wrong. Can anyone help me with this one?Any insights? Thanks, Leebi

How many internal links should a (sub-)page maximal have?
What would the effect of having too much be? Does google stop crawling after a number and punish more internal links?

Magento product pages - should they have a .php or .html?
Hi all, I'm using a plugin to do some SEO work on my Magento site It says this is an error: Product pages should have a suitable file type extension such as .php or .html I removed .html when I first set up my store because I though it looked more aesthetically pleasing, but does this have a negative effect on SEO? I can't find much information on this matter in my searches. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thank you, Laura

Too many outbound links on a page?
We have a "Clients" page on our site with approximately 125 of our clients listed. We have a link to each client's website, so that's 125 links. I am rethinking this approach. Is there any value to having these outbound links? The SEOmoz PRO analysis tells me I have too many links on this page. I have read that more than 100 links on a page is too many, but that seemed to be referring to internal links. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Home page keyword effecting internal page ranking
Hello, My client has a second keyword for the home page that is competitive. The home page is not being ranked for this keyword. Instead, an internal category page is ranking. This internal category page is more relevant than the home page - it shows the categories for the actual products that this term refers to. But everyone around us in Google's page results has far more backlinks than the internal page, and we're all heavily optimized for this term. My question is, is it safe to pull the second term off of the home page or is this internal page strong because it is somehow being strengthened by the home page optimization?

Too many on page links on ecommerce site
I have an online store with 10 catagories, many of those have subcategories. I have a tree style navigation menu on the page. This helps people quickly find what they need. However, I end up with about 125 links on the page that way. Does google really penalize me for this? Is there anyway around this? Advice much appreciated!

Would it be bad to change the canonical URL to the most recent page that has duplicate content, or should we just 301 redirect to the new page?
Is it bad to change the canonical URL in the tag, meaning does it lose it's stats? If we add a new page that may have duplicate content, but we want that page to be indexed over the older pages, should we just change the canonical page or redirect from the original canonical page? Thanks so much! -Amy
