Watermarking Keywords
-
I've been viewing an seo companies website that claims to get small business websites to Google Page 1 for free or starting at $150/mo. I'v noticed that on all the website this company has done work on they include in the footer (usually as a watermark) all the keyword phrases. There don't apprear to be any sites that have been penalized. Isn't this poor SEO practice? I've included a screen shot of what I'm talking about. I just want to be clear. Thank you for your input.

Simon, Thank you again. I can feel your strong views in your messages. I too am disheartened by such advertising and business ethics. It's certainly puts a damper on anyone learning SEO and striving to make a difference and an ethical business out of it. I presume that time will tell! I am only a novice although I have been studying SEO for many years there is so much to learn and it's always changing. Thank you for all your help and input I really appreciate it and look forward to continuing to learn from the community!

Thanks Rob, glad you agree

You're welcome Julie.
Lots of those results as shown on the page ( http://www.myvipwebdesign.com/myvipwebdesign/get-found-on-google-maps.html ) are 'local results' based on local business listings and appear in what's known as a '7 Pack' which lists 7 local results for Google Maps.
Others that are ranking number 1 naturally in Google will be for long tail low competition keywords and chances are, they won't be number 1 for long where there's any degree of competitiveness.
There is some complete nonsense on their website, such as statements like "Their is a certain algorithm that Google follows" and "We also apply the formula we have devised that is "Google Friendly" and submit it to Google on your behalf."
Google don't follow an algorithm, they have the most complex algorithms ever devised. There were over 13,000 changes to their natural search algorithm last year (mostly tests) with around 560 permanent changes. It's impossible to guarantee any top results with any degree of honesty. Also, the second statement is complete nonsense, there is no formula that's 'Google Friendly' that can be submitted to Google, they are making up total rubbish.
So rest assured that you would be making a wise decision by avoiding any such company as this one that makes such ridiculous guarantees and claims.
For some more reassurance, have a read of a page on Google's site "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" which has some really useful advice and even mentions that no one can guarantee a number 1 ranking on Google.
You've probably noticed that this is something I feel rather strongly about. SEO is an unregulated industry and as such, there are way too many 'cowboys' out there looking to make a quick buck from those that are simply looking to grow their business. It really annoys me when such people take advantage of good honest hard working people. As such, whenever I can, I like to highlight what would be wise to avoid getting into. There are plenty of good ethical agencies and freelancers that can help you in an ethical and sustainable way.
Regards
Simon
PS. I don't work for an agency, I work in-house so do have a totally non-biased view here

Nice answer Simon. I would have said the exact same thing! Avoid at all costs, would be my advice.
-
Simon,
Thank you very much. I am wondering why all of the sites that they have done work on are indeed ranking #1 on Google but not penalized?
-
Hi Julie
Your suspicions are well justified; that content is indeed spammy and certainly cause for concern.
What's more, most companies that say they will get a website to Page 1 of Google's search results 'for your popular keyword phrases' in order to win a pitch is likely to partake in unethical practices, especially when their services are free or way too cheap as in your example of $150 per month.
I say this because there can be no guarantees and any company that gives them (plenty do) cannot be trusted. Take a popular phrase such as 'life insurance' or 'loans', any guarantee could not be trusted.
Chances are they participate in questionable practices and/or only target very long tail keywords with little competition and low search volume.
That kind of rate of $150 per month leads me to suspect they will outsource poor quality link building to India or the Philippines for short term gains. There will be nothing sustainable or ethical in free work or work that's that cheap.
My advice is to steer well clear and invest in high quality content, seed and distribute it well, plus find an ethical trusted agency to help you out with the Search side. There are plenty of such agencies around, the one you've found there appears to be anything but.
I hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Keywords Declination
In German we have declination, i.e. we have the keyword "sicherheitskritische Systeme" which can get "sicherheitskritischer Systeme" when declinated. How does Google handle this? Do I have to rewrite all texts, so that the keywords are not declinated? (At least MozPro's ranking algorithm is sensitive and did not accept sicherheitskritischer" for the keyword sicherheitskritische"...) Rewriting might lead to quite awful sentences! Thnaks a lot Andy

Redirect our www.website.com to website. Com/target-keyword
Dear moz community I have been analyzing the websites that rank in top 20 for our target keywords. All of the top 20 sites except us have their websites re directing to websites.com/target keyword. This is due to probably because they have multiple city's and one of the target keywords term is cityname + word. My question is and idea - make a 301 to our www.website.com to /city-keyword and start linking to that page with new links. Would that bring any benefit? Seems that it's a very strong ranking signal. Any threats that I must take into account? We currently rank as #9

Top 10 keywords is still going strong but the rest just got smashed!
Hi SEOMOZ and it's USERs, Been trying to find my answer online but now after three weeks of reading blogposts I'm going to try this. 🙂 My website was ranking really good on 10 important keywords but not so good on the long tail, between 11 - 50 on maybe 30 different other, not so important keywords.
Technical SEO | | Drillo
So I began doing some work (I'm a newbie) but this is what I did:
1. Changed top navigation structure to get 4 other pages (w/ keywords as links) in it. (used a dropdown)
2. Wrote plenty of text that was a good fit for the page. (The text is OK and not to spammy looking.)
3. Added three links from high quality sites with keywords as links to these pages. I added them from my own site that is on the same server, same IP. 😉 I know, not looking so good.
4. Changed URL structure on a couple of pages to get a keyword in it. (did a correct 301)
5. Changed to better Titles and headings on the page. Keywords in them both but not the same. The result:
1. My 10 most important keywords I began ranking even better. I rank no. 1 on 9 out of 10.
2. Almost all the other pages went from ranking ~ 15 - 50 to not > 50. It has now been 4 weeks since I did most of the changes and 3 weeks since all the pages was hit > 50. So now I'm thinking about what to do?
1. Should I clean up my text, titles so they don't look to over optimized?
2. Should I remove my links from my own pages? (my link profile in general is actually pretty good.)
3. or should I just wait? Because changing more will just indicate to Google that somehing fishy is going on 😉 ? In the beginning I hoped that Google killed my rankings just because of the big changes. But now after 3 weeks I'm more sceptical and thinks I've been hit by a over-optimizing filter. According to webmaster tools I've not been hit by a manually penalty. Please, help me. I would really appreciate all ideas from people here with more experience.0 -
Sub-domains for keyword targeting? (specific example question)
Hey everyone, I have a question I believe is interesting and may help others as well. Our competitor heavily (over 100-200) uses sub-domains to rank in the search engines... and is doing quite well. What's strange, however, is that all of these sub-domains are just archives -- they're 100% duplicate content! An example can be seen here where they just have a bunch of relevant posts archived with excerpts. How is this ranking so well? Many of them are top 5 for keywords in the 100k+ range. In fact their #1 source of traffic is SEO for many of the pages. As an added question: is this effective if you were to actually have a quality/non-duplicate page? Thanks! Loving this community.

A keyword suddenly dropping 25 positions in Gooogle
Hello, One of my clients have a new website (just 3 months old) and for some keywords it's already working quite well (some of them already on first page for organic search results in Google). But suddenly one of the keywords (just one) dropped 25 positions from one day to another, while the rest of them are ok and even getting better. What may be happening here? The only thing I have done for this keyword different to the rest is that I have created a few internal links (just 7 o 😎 using the keyword. The site is big, with around 60 pages including a blog. I know that I'm not being very explicit with the information I'm providing... Thank you in advance for your help!

"To keyword or not to keyword" in the URL string?
We are debating on whether to use primary keywords in the URL for every page for a new client for the sake of SEO. What is the feeling in the Community on which version is smarter? Version 1: www.abccompany.com/miami-moving-company/about-us www.abccompany.com/miami-moving-company/contact-us etc. etc. Version 2: www.abccompany.com/about-us Thank you for your thoughts!

Long tail keywords and duplicate content (product description)
Hi <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym> pro's, how are you doing these days? Hope everything is fine... Let's get down to business: I've got a little question about ecommerce sites with duplicate content (product descriptions). I'm already ranking top #1 for exact keyword matche's (did a lot of backlink work with exact keyword). That's fine. The question is: long tail keywords still getting lower results than the competitors, because they published the content first. How to beat them? What I need to do/work to outrank competitors on long tail keywords? (I really need this because almost keywords/products from my niche only have 10% of exact search's). Hope someone can give me a word of light on this! Thanks!
