I NEED ADVICE: Need Web Software for customers to access backend
-
I have a prospect in the credit repair industry. Does anybody know of some software where the clients can log into their own accounts to see the progress?
The feature I am looking for is like a Real Estate website where the brokers can create their own accounts and upload their own properties.

I'm not a Wordpress expert, but theoretically any CMS that supports user accounts and permissions can do this, and the rest would configuration/custom development.
Would the information mostly be files/data from other sources (e.g. spreadsheets and word documents)? You might be able to get away with an FTP/SFTP solution if that's the case.
If actual information (e.g. from your own database) and interaction is needed then you're definitely going to have to do something custom; I don't think there's an 'out of the box' solution that will do what you want. The amount of work involved would be relatively small though I'm guessing, probably 3-4 days for a good programmer depending on the platform/database/desired functionality.
Speaking personally, I wouldn't be a fan of Wordpress for a financial application, it just seems like every quarter there's a new exploit. Another thing to watch out for is your hosting; when I'm doing PCI upgrades/certification/audits shared/virtual hosting can be something of a pain to work around. I don't know if the applicable standard for your task would be more or less strict.

I'm thinking O would have them pull the file like through a web connect (like my quickbooks) or they import the file using a spreadsheet once per month. Yes, compliance can be a big thing. Thank you for sharing your input.

Francisco, you've probably thought about this, but be sure to look at all of the banking rules about privacy and sharing of information as you build this. When I worked at an agency, I remember how it would take weeks of turnaround to get a simple banner ad approved, as all of the wording had to go through legal, and how resistant another bank was to even install Google Analytics on some of their https pages.
I'm taking my experiences there and thinking there must be a lot of rules regarding how a site is to be secured so that type of information isn't hacked, how to ensure proper information displays for each level of person accessing the system, etc. Cost of compliance may be something to consider, and I don't know if WP would be quite compliant enough out of the box.

Basically the site will be built from the ground up, of course using a CMS. The owner would give access to subscribers. It is a credit management service. Currently the owner of the company gets referrals from the banks for people who were turned down for a mortgage or something large. These people/clients will need to get their credit repaired.
All information will be on the subscribers dashboard in their respective accounts. Banking information will be pulled from banks accounts and FICO scores will be pulled from credit reporting agencies. There would be target goals to get a FICO score above a certain goal amount.
I primarily use WordPress and Magento. I have seldom used Joomla and Drupal, but I am familiar with them. Although I have used WordPress many times, I have never heard of any plugin that can create a backend for subscribers. I can't think of anything that is out of the box. The cost of having custom program applications may be too expensive for the prospective client.
@Ryan, You say "This functionality is offered with most any CMS.". Are you saying that WP has a feature where a paying subscriber can have their own account? I have that in Magento, but it's more about tracking packages, orders, subscriptions. I guess it may work in Magento, but I would have to hack everything. Is there something a little more out of the box?
Thanks guys. I always try helping people in this Q&A forum. Good to know there are pros here, not all beginners.

I agree with Valery.
I would also request more details about the nature of how the site will be used. It sounds like the site owner wishes to upload content (credit reports, etc) then restrict access so only specified users (i.e. the client, the client's employees, etc) would have access to the content. This functionality is offered with most any CMS.
If something further is required, we would need to see something along the lines of a Requirements Document to offer better feedback.

It really depends on the underlying architecture. If you're using a custom developed solution (e.g. in .net or .php or the like) then you'd likely have to also create a matching interface for author/editor access.
Some CMS solutions like Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal etc. have pretty robust back end controls that you can control access to, create accounts, etc. But each of them have their own foibles. I think to get a real answer we'd need to know how things are set up on the backend. For example, is it database driven? What kind of database? What language is the site developed in? That sort of thing.

Should i not use hyphens in web page titles? Google Penalty for hyphens?
all the page titles in my site have hyphens between the words like this: http://texas.com/texas-plumbers.html I have seen tests where hyphenated domain names ranked lower than non hyphenated domain names. Does this mean my pages are being penalized for hyphens or is this only in the domain that it is penalized? If I create new pages should I not use hyphens in the page titles when there are two or more words in the title? If I changed all my page titles to eliminate the hyphens, I would lose all my rankings correct? My site is 12 years old and if I changed all these titles I'm guessing that each page would be thrown in the google sandbox for several months, is this true? Thanks mozzers!

Going Mobile - Advice Requested
Hi, I run a website called tvfoodmaps.com. We currently have a desktop website and a mobile app (native apps). However the largest community of our users tend to use our desktop site on their mobile phones. Our bounce rate is about 12% higher for mobile devices than desktop users and our pages per visit drops by almost 50% from desktop to mobile. My hypothesis is that mobile users when presented with a "designed for desktop" site are more likely to leave since the navigation isn't as natural. I'm considering investing in either a responsive design for the site or a dedicated mobile site and wanted the communities input on what metrics I should be looking at to determine "is it worth it"? Or should I just stick with service the desktop version to the mobile users?

Need some advice on choosing categories.
We have a website where we do a daily one minute video about our son who was born with Down syndrome. When I started the site I was going to do a daily video and put all of those in a category called "Noah's Minute." Cute title, but doesn't really tell anyone what it's about. (Oh what I've learned in the last year.) I was going to do no text on those video posts, just the daily one minute video. I wanted it to tell a story, in order, without me adding to it with words. Then I was going to have some other categories where I wrote information about Down syndrome. Therapy post, medical posts, best toys, parenting tips/encouragement, etc. I'm been running this site for almost a year and I now have a much better idea of the type of content I'll be posting, what people are interested in, etc. I now write content for each of the videos, and no longer group them under "Noah's Minute." If you check out some of the posts, you'll see I try to be very intentional with each posts, and try to make each one centered on a specific topic / key words. I'm now having to go through almost a year of posts that were under "Noah's Minute" and re organize them, however I'm having a problem with coming up with categories for the post. I have some of them under the category of "Therapy" since a lot of our readers are interested in checking out the different posts we do with Noah for his developmental therapy. But the other posts are much more "general" I guess. For instance a lot of our posts are just me telling our story and giving general parenting advice / encouragement. But having a category called "Parenting" seems to vague, and also every post I write could be considered "parenting." I'm wondering if someone would mind checking out some of our content, and giving me some advice on how to organize the posts. There is a lot of great info on our site, and many people ask me questions about things that are on the site, but they just didn't know was there. So I want people to find it better. Also how "detailed" do I have to be in the naming of my categories for SEO purposes? For instance, the category called "Therapy' is great for people who find our site, since it's a given that the category will be dealing with "Down Syndrome Therapy" but do I have to name the category "Down Syndrome Therapy" in order for people to find it via search? If so, that would get old quick to my readers: "Down Syndrome Therapy" "Down Syndrome Toys" Down Syndrome Books" etc.... Anyways, I'm not sure where to go from here. Thoughts, feedback, suggestions?

Google News we were dropped and need help finding ot why
Hi i have a site called in2town lifestyle magazine http://www.in2town.co.uk/ and up until two months ago we were with google news and for a long time. But then all of a sudden we were dropped which left us with no confidence about our site and led us to make changes to the site, some good and some bad to try and find out what was wrong with our site and why we were dropped. We have now been concentrating on sorting the site out which has led in a drop in traffic due to not updating it as we should because we are more concerned in trying to make it a quality lifestyle magazine and get back in google as well as making it a good experience for our readers.. I would like your help and finding out what you feel is wrong with our site so we can then work on it and change it and try and find out what went wrong with google news. we have spent years on the site but now we have gone in the wrong direction because we were more worried about google news. If you can advise us on how we should change the site and sort the site out and make it into the professional site it was once more then that would be great.
