H1 Tags
-
Quick and easy most likely -
Just need to clear a few point. I understand each page within the site should only have one H1 tag which should be the most important one. I also believe these only effect google ranking very slightly? right?
Currently my CMS is system is pulling the H1 tag in from the page and automatically using the page heading that is on the page IE) the heading used for the content.
Should this be a keyword / key phrase instead? and will it be duplicate if i used the same one on various pages in my site?
Cheers guys look forward to hearing your feedback

This will not be problem from the penalty point of view - the question is if the page value. What is new or unique about the page that is also about the same topic?
On another note observe that Google monitors and warns about duplicate TITLE and META description tags in Google Webmaster Tools. H tag duplicates are not included. That would have to indicate that H tag is not as important to them.
-
I've seen couple websites with 3 x H1 tags on each page. And they were coming up on first page results. Looks like it wasn't penalized. But I'm following the rule one H1 per page.
-
nice answer!
-
It effects it more than just very slightly, and depending on what kind of site you're running it should either be the blog post title, the sitename, or product name.
It won't be penalized officially; the only penalty is that you could get more juice if they weren't duplicates.
-
Use H tags as they are meant to be used but if you can nicely embed your phrase within that would be great. How to use H tags? Same as you would with indentation structure of a bullet point list. Have them indicate document's topical structure.
For example:
-H1: Vehicles
--H2: Cars
---H3: Sedans
---H3: SUVs
--H2: Motorbikes
---H3: Dirtbikes
---H3: Roadbikes
----H4: Harley Davidson
---H3: Sportsbikes
----H4: Suzuki
-----H5: SFV650
------H6: SFV650 Engine Specifications -
Having multiple
tags isn't an issue. Sometimes having multiple
tags is normal for a page and here's Matt Cutts weighing in on it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIn5qJKU8VM
Also
tags aren't a strong ranking factor, check out these links for more info - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-vs-bing-correlation-analysis-of-ranking-elements - and - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-biggest-seo-mistakes-seomoz-has-ever-made - BONUS LINK - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/bing-vs-google-prominence-of-ranking-elements
Your
and your title should be editable independantly, though often they may be the same anyway.
Your titles should definitely be different across all of your pages as the <title>tag is still a strong ranking factor. Having multiple pages with the same <title> is not advised.</p></title>
-
In short: Ideally you'll have one H1 per page, and it will be unique across the site.
-
There wouldn't usually be an issue about using the same H1 tag on multiple pages but if with the CMS you are using H1 tag = Title tag then you will end up with lots of duplicate titled pages. This reduces th opportunity for targeting multiple keywords and phrases across multiple pages.
As most pages will focus on a different subject or product, then most titles will be different and most H1's will be different.
The correlation between the existence of H1 tags and rankings has been shown in testing by guys at SEO Moz to be a low positive if I remember rightly so I wouldn't get too hung up about the H1, focus more on the Title.
Hope this helps.
-
Does it matter if you use the same H1 tag on various pages in the same site? or will this become duplicated and penalised by the search engines?
-
This is a common issue for CMS's and one I have faced too.
If whatever you put in the heading is used as the title then you will want to make sure that the heading is unique, relevant as both a heading and a title, ensure it is targeted at your key words or phrases BUT also as the heading will be spotted on the page by the user it must make sense for them too.
No point having a heading which confuses the user and sends them in the wrong direction.
Hope this helps.

Questions Regarding Wordpress Blog Format, Categories and Tag pages...
I'm looking to make some optimizations to a website I'm working on but wanted more input before I get started: Currently, when blogs are posted to the website, the URL for each post looks like this:www.mywebsite.com/blogpost I've heard that for whatever reason, the best practice is to make sure that the blog posts get posted to a blog sub-directory like so: www.mywebsite.com/blog/blogpost If I were to make this change, I'm assuming I would have to 301 redirect all of the existing blogs to their new locations. Is this change worth doing and are there any other considerations I should be taking into account? Also, I'm aware that there are certain schools of thought that category and tag pages should be no-indexed to avoid duplicate content issues. Can anyone shed some light on this from first hand experience? Thanks in advance!

Canonical tag + HREFLANG vs NOINDEX: Redundant?
Hi, We launched our new site back in Sept 2013 and to control indexation and traffic, etc we only allowed the search engines to index single dimension pages such as just category, brand or collection but never both like category + brand, brand + collection or collection + catergory We are now opening indexing to double faceted page like category + brand and the new tag structure would be: For any other facet we're including a "noindex, follow" meta tag. 1. My question is if we're including a "noindex, follow" tag to select pages do we need to include a canonical or hreflang tag afterall? Should we include it either way for when we want to remove the "noindex"? 2. Is the x-default redundant? Thanks for any input. Cheers WMCA

Meta Tags (again)
Hey, I know this has been discussed to death but look back through previous postings there doesn't seem to be a consensus on the exact Meta tags that an eCommerce site should include, specifically whether to remove the keyword tag or not since it is believed that Yahoo potentially still makes use of it. Currently our homepage has the following Meta Tags: <title>Buy Printer Cartridges | Ink and Toner Cartridge for Inkjet and Laser Printers</title> Description" content="<a class="attribute-value">Visit Refresh Cartridges for great prices on ink cartridges, toner cartridges, ink, printers and accessories.</a>" /> Keywords" content="<a class="attribute-value">ink cartridges, cheap cartridges, inkjet cartridges, inkjet ink cartridges, ink cartridge, printer ink cartridges, laser cartridges, toner, laser printers</a>" /> Content-Type" content="<a class="attribute-value">text/html; charset=iso-8859-1</a>"/> author" content="<a class="attribute-value">Ink Cartridges, Inkjet Cartridge, Printer Cartridge, Toner Cartridges Refresh Cartridges</a>" /> expires" content="<a class="attribute-value">0</a>" /> robots" content="<a class="attribute-value">noodp,index,follow</a>" /> Language" content="<a class="attribute-value">English</a>" /> Cache-Control" content="<a class="attribute-value">Public</a>" /> verify-v1" content="<a class="attribute-value">sJXqAAWP6ar/LTEOMyUgG6nqothxk62tJTid+ryBJxo=</a>" /> viewport" content="<a class="attribute-value">width=1024</a>" /> This is too messy but before I do something drastic that I'll possibly regret please can you confirm that, in your opinion, I am best to remove everything with the exception of this: <title>Buy Printer Cartridges | Ink and Toner Cartridge for Inkjet and Laser Printers</title> Description" content="<a class="attribute-value">Visit Refresh Cartridges for great prices on ink cartridges, toner cartridges, ink, printers and accessories.</a>" /> Content-Type" content="<a class="attribute-value">text/html; charset=iso-8859-1</a>"/>

viewport" content="<a class="attribute-value">width=1024</a>" /> I realise there is a verify-v1 tag in there but this can be done through a file on our server so while cleaning up that might as well go. Would there be an argument for keeping any of the other tags or are they all pretty much redundant now? Many thanks! Chris0 -
Proper use and coding of rel = "canonical" tag
I'm working on a site that has pages for many wedding vendors. There are essentially 3 variations of the page for each vendor with only slightly different content, so they're showing up as "duplicate content" in my SEOmoz Campaign. Here's an example of the 3 variations: http://www.weddingreportsma.com/MA-wedding.cfm/vendorID/4161 http://www.weddingreportsma.com/MA-wedding.cfm?vendorID=4161&action=messageWrite http://www.weddingreportsma.com/MA-wedding.cfm?vendorID=4161&action=writeReview Because of this, we placed a rel="canoncial" tag in the second 2 pages to try to fix the problem. However, the coding does not seem to validate in the w3 html validator. I can't say I understand html well enough to understand the error the validator is pointing out. We also added a the following to the second 2 types of pages <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> Am I employing this tag correctly in this case? Here is a snippet of the code below. <html> <head> <title>Reviews on Astonishing Event, Inc from Somerset MAtitle> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="[/includes/style.css](view-source:http://www.weddingreportsma.com/includes/style.css)"> <link href="[http://www.weddingreportsma.com/MA-wedding.cfm/vendorID/4161](view-source:http://www.weddingreportsma.com/MA-wedding.cfm/vendorID/4161)" rel="canonical" /> <meta name="robots" content="noindex">

301 Redirect or Canonical Tag or Leave Them Alone? Different Pages - Similar Content
We currently have 3 different versions of our State Business-for-Sale listings pages - the versions are: **Version 1 -- Preferred Version: ** http://www.businessbroker.net/State/California-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx Title = California Business for Sale Ads - California Businesses for Sale & Business Brokers - Sell a Business on Business Broker Version 2: http://www.businessbroker.net/Businesses_For_Sale-State-California.aspx Title = California Business for Sale | 3124 California Businesses for Sale | BusinessBroker.net Version 3: http://www.businessbroker.net/listings/business_for_sale_california.ihtml Title = California Businesses for Sale at BusinessBroker.net - California Business for Sale While the page titles and meta data are a bit different, the bulk of the page content (which is the listings rendered) are identical. We were wondering if it would make good sense to either (A) 301 redirect Versions 2 and 3 to the preferred Version 1 page or (B) put Canonical Tags on Versions 2 and 3 labeling Version 1 as the preferred version. We have this issue for all 50 U.S. States -- I've mentioned California here but the same applies for Alabama through Wyoming - same issue. Given that there are 3 different flavors and all are showing up in the Search Results -- some on the same 1st page of results -- which probably is a good thing for now -- should we do a 301 redirect or a Canonical Tag on Versions 2 and 3? Seems like with Google cracking down on duplicate content, it might be wise to be proactive. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Matt M
