What are the benefits of footer expanded site maps?
-
Many sites display a site map on the bottom of each page with a limited depth of around two deep. Has anyone done a A/B test on this, for selected search terms? Is this good practice?
-
The determining factor for inclusion of links into an HTML sitemap is not the depth of the link. For example this Q&A thread is 2 levels deep (http://www.seomoz.org/q/what-are-the-benefits-of-footer-expanded-site-maps) but in my opinion should not be included in a sitemap.
The primary purpose of an HTML sitemap is to help users navigate your site. It is an alternative method of presenting your navigation bar along with other important links within your site. A secondary purpose would be to help search engines navigate your site (although the XML sitemap is better suited for that purpose).
You can view your link statistics through an Analytics tracker. Google WMT will show how often users click on the sitemap.
With respect to it being a good practice, I would say it's not a bad practice but also not a required practice. I place it on all sites I work with because many clients ask for it. If your site offers solid navigation, there is no need for a sitemap at all (XML or HTML).

Site name in page title - leave it or remove it?
Hi all, Recently came across some authority blog (quicksprout to be precise) which stated that apart from main page, contact page, about us and some other generic pages, site name should be removed as it might produce duplicate content. example "How to blog | Example Site name" This mostly is the issue with tags and categories pages as it shows on Moz issues. Is that really a problem and site name should be taken off them? Thank you.

Reducing number of site pages?
Hi, I am looking through my site structure and I have a lot of pages left over from the days of article keywords. Probably 7 or 8 years ago, someone sold my husband on article key word pages. I have slowly gotten rid of a lot of them as they have fallen out out of the ranks. I would like to get rid of the rest, probably 5 or 6 pages. Will it hurt my rankings to delete pages and redirect them? My customers really like the simplicity of our site and I want to keep it that way, plus clean up flags that Moz is telling me is a problem. I think its easier to keep less pages top notch than have to worry with a lot of them. Especially since my customers aren't viewing them. Thanks in advance!

Moving Site from HTTP to HTTPS
Hi, So the news is that Google has started giving more importance to sites with HTTPS i.e. it is now a new ranking signal. It says that as of now it affects fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high quality content but it may decide to strengthen it as they would like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web. In that case, what should we do? Switching from http:// to https:// means change in urls and low traffic. How to cope with it? Do we have to implement 'n' number of redirects? Regards,

New jobboard: Can redirecting folder (site.com/jobboard) to subdomain (jobboard.site.com) hurt SEO?
Hi there, I'm planning to implement a jobboard on my website which needs to be installed on a subdomain (jobboard.site.com) but I'd really like to use site.com/jobboard for promoting this jobboard (jobboard collects external industry jobs). Are there any possible disadvantages when I set up a 301 redirect from jobboard.site.com to site.com/jobboard? Also: What if I want to move this jobboard to a unique domain one day (e.g. jobboard-industry-xy.com), Would that be tricky (as I'd basically have to redirect the folder-to-subdomain redirect to an external domain and therefore get a folder-to-subdomain-to-external-domain redirect...)? Cheers, Thomas

Do the rules of “natural” linking apply to on-site crosslinking as well?
At an SEO conference I attended the speaker said that Google wants the anchor text of a link to be more natural. Specifically you mentioned that the anchor text should be the company brand, the domain name/URL or a call to action (ex. “Click here.”) I thought this was an interesting idea for offsite linkbuilding. BUT, my question is…Does the rule also apply for on-site crosslinking between my webpages? Is there potential harm or a benefit to adding keywords to the anchor text of the links within my site?

Duplicate Content - Site Wide or Internet Wide?
Hello... I am creating a new website and i was wondering how you guys would define duplicate content? If my new site had the same page titles and descriptions as my existing site, would that be duplicate content? Or does duplicate content mean same titles and descriptions in the same site? I'm wondering if i can upload the same database (with page titles and descriptions and alt tags) to my new site or if that would be looked at as duplicate... Thanks

Thank you Jon
