SEO-Friendly Method to Load XML Content onto Page
-
I have a client who has about 100 portfolio entries, each with its own HTML page.
Those pages aren't getting indexed because of the way the main portfolio menu page works: It uses javascript to load the list of portfolio entries from an XML file along with metadata about each entry. Because it uses javascript, crawlers aren't seeing anything on the portfolio menu page.
Here's a sample of the javascript used, this is one of many more lines of code:
// load project xml try{ var req = new Request({ method: 'get', url: '/data/projects.xml',
Normally I'd have them just manually add entries to the portfolio menu page, but part of the metadata that's getting loaded is project characteristics that are used to filter which portfolio entries are shown on page, such as client type (government, education, industrial, residential, industrial, etc.) and project type (depending on type of service that was provided). It's similar to filtering you'd see on an e-commerce site. This has to stay, so the page needs to remain dynamic.
I'm trying to summarize the alternate methods they could use to load that content onto the page instead of javascript (I assume that server side solutions are the only ones I'd want, unless there's another option I'm unaware of). I'm aware that PHP could probably load all of their portfolio entries in the XML file on the server side. I'd like to get some recommendations on other possible solutions. Please feel free to ask any clarifying questions.
Thanks!

As a response to my own question, I received some other good suggestions to this issue via Twitter:
- @__jasonmulligan__ suggested XSLT
- @__KevinMSpence__ suggested "...easiest solution would be to use simplexml --it's a PHP parser for lightweight XML" & "Just keep in mind that simplexml loads the doc into memory, so there can be performance issues with large docs."
- Someone suggested creating a feed from the XML, but I don't think that adds a ton of benefit aside from another step, since you'd still need a way to pull that content on to the page.
- There were also a few suggestions for ways to convert the XML feed to another solution like JSON on the page, but those were really outside the scope of what we were looking to do.
Final recommendation to the client was to just add text links manually beneath all of the Javascript content, since they only were adding a few portfolio entries per year, and it would look good in the theme. A hack, perhaps, but much faster and cost-effective. Otherwise, would have recommended they go with PHP plus the simplexml recommendation from above.

Think you need to find a developer who understand progressive enhancement so that the page degrades gracefully. You'll need to deliver the page using something server-side (php?) and then add the bells and whistles later.
I'm guessing the budget won't cover moving the entire site/content onto a database/cms platform.
How does the page look in Google Webmaster Tools - (Labs, Instant Preview). Might give you a nice visual way to explain the problem to the client.

Site was done a year or two ago by a branding agency. To their credit, they produced clean and reasonably-well documented code, and they do excellent design work. However, they relied too heavily on Flash and javascript to load content throughout the site, and the site has suffered as a result.
Site is entirely HTML, CSS, & Javascript and uses Dreamweaver template files to produce the portfolio entry pages, which then propagate into the XML files, which then get loaded by the rest of the site.
I wouldn't call it AJAX - I think it loads all of the XML file and then uses the filters to display appropriate content, so there are no subsequent calls to the server for more data.
User interface is great, and makes it easy to filter and sort by relevant portfolio items. It's just not indexable.

What's the reason it was implemented this way in the first place? Is the data being exported from another system in a particular way?
What's the site running on - is there a CMS platform?
Is it javascript because it's doing some funky ajax driven "experience" or are they just using javascript and the xml file to enable you to filter/sort based on different facets?
Final silly question - how's the visitor expected to interact with them?
-
Try creating an XML sitemap with all the entries, spin that into an HTML sitemap version and also a portfolio page with a list of entries by type. It's a bit of work, but will probably work best.

Thanks Doug,
I forgot to mention it above, but I am definitely mentioning other workaround methods of getting the content indexed, specificallly:
- XML Sitemap
- Cross-linking - there's plenty of other opportunities to link throughout the site that haven't been done yet - so that's high on the list.
- Off-site deep link opportunities are also large and will be addressed.
- The projects aren't totally linear, so we can't use next/previous in this example, but that's a good idea as well.
Those aside, there is a fundamental issue with the way the data is working now and I want to address the ideal solution, since it's within the client's budget to have that content redesigned properly.

While helpfully not answering the question, could you generate a xml sitemap (I take it the portfolio data is being generated from something?) to help Google find and index the pages?
Is there any cross linking between the individual portfolio pages or at least a next/previous?
(My first thought would have been the php route.)

Best Way to Create SEO Content for Multiple, International Websites
I have a client that has multiple websites for providing to other countries. For instance, they have a .com website for the US (abccompany.com), a .co.uk website for the UK (abccompany.co.uk), a .de website for Germany (abccompany.de), and so on. The have websites for the Netherlands, France, and even China. These all act as separate websites. They have their own addresses, their own content (some duplicated but translated), their own pricing, their own Domain Authority, backlinks, etc. Right now, I write content for the US site. The goal is to write content for long and medium tail keywords. However, the UK site is interested in having myself write content for them as well. The issue I'm having is how can I differentiate the content? And what is the best way to target content for each country? Does it make sense to write separate content for each website to target results in that country? The .com site will still show up in UK web results still fairly high. Does it make sense to just duplicate the content but in a different language or for the specific audience in that country? I guess the biggest question I'm asking is, what is the best way of creating content for multiples countries' search results? I don't want the different websites to compete with each other in a sense nor do I want to spend extra time trying to rank content for multiple sites when I could just focus on trying to rank one for all countries. Any help is appreciated!

SEO mobile app optimization: multi tag link alternate media per every devices is acceptable in the desktop page?
Hi All, Hi hope someone could answer to this question because on internet I haven't found a clear solution so far: I have: 1 desktop website (let's make www.example.com) and different mobile websites for each main device (let's make iphone.example.mobi; android.example.mobi; winphone.example.mobi) In order to optimize my mobile websites, According to the Google guideline of the above separate urls configuration , I should add a tag link alternate media in the desktop page and a canonical tag in the corresponding mobile page in order to create a connection between them. But, I need to keep a 1-to-1 connection between desktop page and mobile page (Google recommends to have 1 desktop page linked to 1 mobile page and viceversa and discourages the 1-to-multi connections). What I would like: In my case, I have to add the a single desktop page of desktop site (example www.example.com/category1/), 3 links alternate media tag,( one for iphone.example.mobi, one for android.example.mobi and one for winphone.example.mobi). Furthemore, I have to add a canonical tag in every corresponding mobile page of the 3 mobile site version, a canonical tag pointing to my sektop page www.example.com/category1/. Now my worries are: having a single desktop page with 3 different link alternate tags pointing to 3 different mobile websites (one each), is something or not aligned to the google seo mobile guideline? If not, How should I configure my desktop website and my 3 mobile web applications(iphone, android, winphone) in order to follow the Google requirements for Separate urls apllication? Thanks, Massimliano

A/B Testing - Should I add product descriptions on my category landing pages as well as on product pages and if so . how to do this to avoid duplicate content
Hi All, I recently relaunched a new design on my tool hire eCommerce website and now display my products in grid form on my category landing pages as opposed to just a list view which we previously had on the old design. My bounce rates are alot higher than they use to be and my gut instinct is telling me maybe this is wrong . I want to do some a/b testing using a list view. My question is , previously in our list views we just showed the images and pricing and had on page content on the bottom of the page. The user would click on the product image and they would then we taken to the product page which has the product description , t&c, etc etc.. If I was to do this in my a/b testing but change it so we also displayed the product descriptions as well on the category landing pages . Is there a special way to do this as in effect, we would have duplicate content as the product descriptions are also on the product page?. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as to whether its a No No from an SEO point of view ?... Heres a short url link to one of my category pages - http://goo.gl/QJv5gw Historically we use to rank well for the category landing pages and not for the product pages. Our Rankings are down , bounce rates are higher so I am trying to sort both. We have good content on pages etc. Any advice greatly appreciated as always thanks Pete

Penalized for Duplicate Page Content?
I have some high priority notices regarding duplicate page content on my website www.3000doorhangers.com Most of the pages listed here are on our sample pages: http://www.3000doorhangers.com/home/door-hanger-pricing/door-hanger-design-samples/ On the left side of our page you can go through the different categories. Most of the category pages have similar text. We mainly just changed the industry on each page. Is this something that google would penalize us for? Should I go through all the pages and use completely unique text for each page? Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks! Andrea

If Penguin 2.0 targets specific pages and keywords, should I spend less SEO effort on them since will they be harder to optimize? Penalty repair is only starting at end of year.
I’m working with a company that got hit by Penguin 2.0. They’re going to switch to white-hat only for a few months and review analytics before considering repairing the penalty. In the meantime, would it make sense to focus less SEO effort (on-site optimization, link building, etc.) on any pages or keywords that were penalized or hit hardest? Or are those the pages we should work on the most? Thanks for reading!

Does anyone know the rules or methods for improving SEO of forums?
After speaking with the Yoast team, they explained that their product cannot support SEO for forums as forum support within Wordpress comes via a plugin and their Wordpress SEO by Yoast plugin cannot support another program. They said that doing SEO on a forum is really hard. I believe it. The tiered hierarchy of forums would seem to make it difficult. Should I use a direct such as NOINDEX, FOLLOW for the higher level elements of the forum and index just the topic? I'm really at a loss here. My website is http://www.heartspm.com and my forum can be seen on the left menu. Press "Ask A Question." Thanks in advance. Gerry

Handling Similar page content on directory site
Hi All, SEOMOZ is telling me I have a lot of duplicate content on my site. The pages are not duplicate, but very similar, because the site is a directory website with a page for cities in multiple states in the US. I do not want these pages being indexed and was wanting to know the best way to go about this. I was thinking I could do a rel ="nofollow" on all the links to those pages, but not sure if that is the correct way to do this. Since the folders are deep within the site and not under one main folder, it would mean I would have to do a disallow for many folders if I did this through Robots.txt. The other thing I am thinking of is doing a meta noindex, follow, but I would have to get my programmer to add a meta tag just for this section of the site. Any thoughts on the best way to achieve this so I can eliminate these dup pages from my SEO report and from the search engine index? Thanks!
