Branded Searches -- Should I Name My Products Differently?
-
I know that branded searches are a large component of whether sites were hit by Panda or not, and I wonder if moving forward, I should always include the name of my site (domain) in the name of the product.
For example, if I have a product with a unique name such as 'history maps' should I change the name to include my brand name, i.e '[domain] history maps'? Or, if users search for the unique product name, is that sufficient?

While it's true that big brands get away with more than other sites, I think it's a lot more complex than that. Big brands also have massive link profiles and high authority, which cushions a lot of other problems. Some big brands actually were hit by Panda, although to varying degrees.
Driving brand searches alone isn't going to work for most sites. Google is taking more offline factors into account for what constitutes a brand, I'm willing to bet. They're also looking at overall volume, authority, social activity, etc. It's not going to be easy to make yourself look like a big brand online if you aren't in "real" life.
If you want to build your brand, that's fine, and I think it's certainly good to do things like use some branded terms in anchor text (just for diversity). It's also, of course, a business decision as much (or more) than an SEO one. There's value to brand-building. I just wouldn't treat it as a cure for SEO problems. There are plenty of easier and more effective ways to prevent algo-related issues. A lot of Panda comes down to content quality, aggressive advertising, and site architecture.

Basically, if you were a brand, you weren't really affected by Panda. There is quite a bit of discussion around 'branded searches' as a main indicator of whether a site is a brand or not.
For example, if you look in adwords keyword tool for searches around macy's, youll see people are looking for 'macys home' 'macy's boots,' 'macys furniture.'

Can you clarify what you mean regarding branded searches and Panda? I'm not aware of any Panda issues involving brand vs. non-brand searches.
-
I would love to know too. My thinking is that adding any non keyword related words to your title will decrease your % of accuracy towards the search query. So technically I think "history maps" is better than "'history maps [name]" for the search query "history maps". *Not sure though.

A client rebranded a few years ago and doesn't want to be associated with it's old brand name. He wishes not to appear when the old brand is searched in Google, is there something we can do?
The problem is there was redirection between the old branded site and the new one, and now when you type in the name of the old brand, the new one comes up. I have desperately tried to convince this client there is nothing we can do about it, dozens of news articles crop up with the two brands together as this was a hot topic a few years ago, but just in case I missed something I thought I'd ask the community of experts here on Moz. An example for this would be Tyco Healthcare that became covidien in 2007. When you type tyco healthcare, covidien crops up here and there. Any ideas? Thanks!

[Very Urgent] More 100 "/search/adult-site-keywords" Crawl errors under Search Console
I just opened my G Search Console and was shocked to see more than 150 Not Found errors under Crawl errors. Mine is a Wordpress site (it's consistently updated too): Here's how they show up: Example 1: URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword/page2.html/feed/rss2 Linked From: http://an-adult-image-hosting.com/search/adult-site-keyword/page2.html Example 2 (this surprised me the most when I looked at the linked from data): URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html/page/3/ Linked From: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html/page/2/ (this is showing as if it's from our own site) http://a-spammy-adult-site.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html Example 3: URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-3.html Linked From: http://an-adult-image-hosting.com/search/adult-site-keyword-3.html How do I address this issue?

Product Schema & Google Guidelines
Hi We have product mark up on our site, data-vocab rather than schema. I can't see it showing in Google SERPs, but when testing it appears to be correct. Are Google still selective with what schema they show for a site? Thanks

Keyword research with smart search suggestions?
I found a smart search suggestion plugin that looks amazing and thought I'd see if anyone has experience with it. www.suggest.io looks like a great usability improvement and even helps to do keyword research with what your visitors are searching on your site. I'm excited about it and feel like it is too good to be true. Does anyone have experience with this plugin or something similar?

Did adding product videos cause my products to lose #1 position?
I work on an e-commerce site and for many of the products we sell, we rank #1 for "product name + item number" related searches. We decided to add product videos to some of our products in the hopes of getting an additional listing in the SERP's (regular listing + video listing in universal video results) Instead.. What we've noticed is that sometimes we are not getting 2 listings but just a regular listing with a video thumbnail that ranks somewhere on the middle of the first page. The video thumbnail is great.. but I'd rather the #1 position. I don't think Google likes to show video results as the #1 position for obvious product searches. What do you think? Did we lose our #1 position because of adding the videos to our product pages? Any advice or similar experiences? ~~ Additional information: On some of those queries, Google had decided to ignore our video and we have maintained our #1 ranking. Thanks!
