Redirect from old wordpress site to new php site? Best approach
-
Hi
I have two websites one legacy site done in wordpress the other in php. However I would like to merge the two together and remove the wordpress site.
However it has a good link profile and the pages rank well.
What is the best approach to do a 301 redirect from the old site with all its pages pointing to the homepage of the new site?
If so what's the best way to do this in wordpress?
Many thanks

- Meta refreshes should never be replaced with 301's, they are actual much worse than a 302 redirect.
- There are a few redirects you can find - http://www.aowaa.com/5-wordpress-301-redirect-plugin/ and http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-301-redirects/. The disadvantage I find with using plugins is that they extremely slow down your site.
- For doing 301 redirects it's entirely up to the server your site is hosted on.
-
Basically because there were too sites in tandem and when the business areas merged there is only a need for one site.
I am struggling with the best way to achieve this as described in my post at the bottom of this thread

Can this be done?
on each page indexed?
Are there not any Wordpress plugins that would do this without delving into the htaccess file?
In your example you mention the code below, how would I change what I have below to redirect from my mydomain.co.uk site to point at the correct site mydomain.com site
And on the redirect 301 lines, how would I redirect - what would the code need to be?
www.mydomain.co.uk/sample to www.mydomain.com/newsamplepage.php

Hi Ian,
Edward has started on the right step in terms
Ian I wouldn't say cms is too important as hosting and server details, because hosting & server is what limits your ability to migrate the website.
Check out this recent article - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos and go to the URL mapping section to get a comprehensive step by step guide. Focus on your best pages.
Naghirniac, rather than searching pages indexed by google, it would be better to use a site crawler like Xenu or screaming frog as it will find all duplicate and 404 pages for you.
Good luck,
V

Ian,
You will need to do the follow:
1) Search pages indexed by google
You will need to do the 301 redirection only for the pages that google already indexed. To discovery then you need to google "site:www.example.com", where example.com is your website
2) Create the .htaccess file
Inside of the .htaccess file you will need to include:
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
redirect 301 /old.html http://www.example.com/new.html
The first part is to avoid duplicated content from www.example.com and example.com. The line redirect 301 you will need to write for each page you need a redirection (founded at step 1). That's all.
-
redirect the pages in the .htaccess file.
rather than redirect them all to the homepage, you should redirect them to the most relevant page on the other site.
why are you getting rid of one site?

Sub domain? Micro site? What's the best solution?
My client currently has two websites to promote their art galleries in different parts of the country. They have bought a new domain (let's call it buyart.com) which they would eventually like to use as an e-commerce platform. They are wondering whether they keep their existing two gallery websites (non e-commerce) separate as they always have been, or somehow combine these into the new domain and have one overarching brand (buyart.com). I've read a bit on subdomains and microsites but am unsure at this stage what the best option would be, and what the pros and cons are. My feeling is to bring it all together under buyart.com so everything is in one place and creates a better user journey for anyone who would like to visit. Thoughts?

How do you handle Wordpress sitemaps within your site?
I have a regular site map on my site and I also have a Wordpress site installed within it that we use for blog/news content. I currently have an auto-sitemap generator installed in Wordpress which automatically updates the sitemap and submits it to the search engines each time the blog is updated. The question I have (which I think I know the answer to but I just want to confirm) is do I have to include all of the articles within the blog in the main site's sitemap despite the Wordpress sitemap having them in there already? If I do include the articles in the main website's sitemap, they would also be in the Wordpress sitemap as well, which is redundant. Redundancy is not good, so I just want to make sure.

Does it really matter to maintain 301 redirect after de-indexing of old URLs?
Today, I was reading latest blog post on SEOmoz blog about. Uncrawled 301s - A Quick Fix for When Relaunches Go Too Well This is very interesting study about 301 & How it useful to maintain traffic. I'm working on eCommerce website and I have done similar stuff on my website. I have big confusion to manage 301 redirect. My website generates new URLs due to following actions. Re-write dynamic URLs. Re-launch entire website on different eCommerce platform. [osCommerce to Magento Commerce] Re-name category. Trasfer one product from one category to another category. I'm managing my 301 redirect with old practice. Excel sheet data from Google webmaster tools and set specific new URLs for redirect. Hoooo... Now, I have 8.5K redirect in htaccess... And, I'm thinking it's too much. Can we remove old 301 redirect from htaccess or not? This is big question for me. Because, all pages are not hyperlink on external website. Google have just de-indexed old URLs and indexed new URLs. So, Is it require to maintain 301 redirect after Google process?

What's the best way to solve this sites duplicate content issues?
Hi, The site is www.expressgolf.co.uk and is an e-commerce website with lots of categories and brands. I'm trying to achieve one single unique URL for each category / brand page to avoid duplicate content and to get the correct URL's indexed. Currently it looks like this... Main URL http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green Different Versions http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all/ Firstly, what is the best course of action to make all versions point to the main URL and keep them from being indexed - Canonical Tag, NOINDEX or block them in robots? Secondly, do I just need to 301 the (/) from all URL's to the non (/) URL's ? I'm sure this question has been answered but I was having trouble coming to a solution for this one site. Cheers, Paul

Does 301 redirecting a site multiple times keep the value of the original site?
Hi, All! If I 301 redirect site www.abc.com to www.def.com, it should pass (almost) all linkjuice, rank, trust, etc. What happens if I then redirect site www.def.com to www.ghi.com? Does the value of the original site pass indefinitely as long as you do the redirects correctly? Or does it start to be devalued at some point? If anyone's had experience redirecting a site more than once and they've seen reportable good/bad/neutral results, that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! -Aviva B

301 an old site to a newer site...
Hi First, to be upfront - these are not my websites, I'm asking because they are trying to compete in my niche. Here's the details, then the questions... There is a website that is a few months old with about 200 indexed pages and about 20 links, call this newsite.com There is a website that is a few years old with over 10,000 indexed pages and over 20,000 links, call this oldsite.com newsite.com acquired oldsite.com and set a 301 redirect so every page of oldsite.com is re-directed to the front page of newsite.com newsite.com & oldsite.com are on the same topic, the 301 occurred in the past week. Now, oldsite.com is out of the SERPs and newsite.com is pretty much ranking in the same spot (top 10) for the main term. Here are my questions; 1. The 10,000 pages on oldsite.com had plenty of internal links - they no longer exists, so I imagine when the dust settles - it will be like oldsite.com is a one page site that re-diretcts to newsite.com ... How long will a ranking boost last for? 2. With the re-direct setup to completely forget about the structure and content of oldsite.com, it's clear to me that it was setup to pass the 'Link Juice' from oldsite.com to newsite.com ... Do the major SE's see this as a form of SPAM (manipulating the rankings), or do they see it as a good way to combine two or more websites? 3. Does this work? Is everybody doing it? Should I be doing it? ... or are there better ways for me to combat this type of competition (eg we could make a lot of great content for the money spent buying oldsite.com - but we certainly wouldn't get such an immediate increase to traffic)?
