Restructuring Menu's
-
Hi all I am running my site on Wordpress using a slightly modified them from Studiopress on the Genisis frame work. I am extremely over my head but alas until I get some revenue SEO and Design are all on me. I do not know HTML or CSS but I do follow directions well (unless you ask my wife).
Disclaimer out of the way I have some questions.
I would like to change up my menu's to be more on the line of
Products | Services | About Us | Contact Us | Blog
Listing various direct mail pieces under Products, Sevices and so on and so forth.
I wonder does this mean I will have to figure out how to write 301's and other complicated things or can I just make the changes. I think but might be wrong that this will change the URL's.
Any advice before I mess this up would be greatly helpful.
My site is http://www.roiautosolutions.com.
If you want a few laughs about the car business read the 2 most recent blog post, anything before that and my writing style is pretty boring.
Thanks,
Mark Hilger

If you haven't tackled this yet, I'd suggest the Redirection plugin for Wordpress for IF you need 301s.
I've only used Studiopress a little bit, but I imagine it has some features similar to Thesis. With Thesis, I can change on the fly what pages I want in my menus. The pages themselves (their contents and URLs) don't change at all, I'm just choosing to now have "About Us" shown in the menu and not show "USS Iowa" in that menu.
If my husband adds a new page to the site about flags for our ships, but forgets to put it in the products folder, I can edit that page and the Redirection plugin automatically creates a 301 redirect for me. Likewise if I make a typo in the page name and don't catch it until after the URL has been created, I can change the URL name and the Redirection plugin automatically creates the 301 redirect. This paragraph applies to any WP install with that plugin, doesn't matter the theme you're using, just make sure that option for automatically doing the 301s is checked.
Does this help at all?

Hi Mark,
If I understand correctly, you want to change your menu structure, which in turn will change th subsequent pages?
If the menu changes are going to result in page names changing (im talking filename changes) then yes you may want to 301 redirect the old pages to relevant new ones.
301's are not complex, but can cause MAJOR issues if not done correctly. There are a number of plug ins for Wordpress that ma help manage the 301's check out
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-301-redirects/
Also, you may want to read up on HTaccess and 301's, but I would not recommend tackling your HTaccess until you KNOW what you are doing.

Hope that helps a little.
Good Luck!

Will disallowing URL's in the robots.txt file stop those URL's being indexed by Google
I found a lot of duplicate title tags showing in Google Webmaster Tools. When I visited the URL's that these duplicates belonged to, I found that they were just images from a gallery that we didn't particularly want Google to index. There is no benefit to the end user in these image pages being indexed in Google. Our developer has told us that these urls are created by a module and are not "real" pages in the CMS. They would like to add the following to our robots.txt file Disallow: /catalog/product/gallery/ QUESTION: If the these pages are already indexed by Google, will this adjustment to the robots.txt file help to remove the pages from the index? We don't want these pages to be found.

Google's form for "Small sites that should rank better" | Any experiences or results?
Back in August of 2013 Google created a form that allowed people to submit small websites that "should be ranking better in Google". There is more info about it in this article http://www.seroundtable.com/google-small-site-survey-17295.html Has anybody used it? Any experiences or results you can share? *private message if you do not want to share publicly...

My landing page changed in google's serp. I used to have a product page now I have a pdf?
I have been optimizing this page for a few weeks now and and have seen our page for up from 23rd to 11th on the serp's. I come to work today and not only have I dropped to 15 but I've also had my relevant product page replaced by this page . Not to mention the second page is a pdf! I am not sure what happened here but any advice on how I could fix this would be great. My site is www.mynaturalmarket.com and the keyword I'm working on is Zyflamend.

Will pages irrelevant to a site's core content dilute SEO value of core pages?
We have a website with around 40 product pages. We also have around 300 pages with individual ingredients used for the products and on top of that we have some 400 pages of individual retailers which stock the products. Ingredient pages have same basic short info about the ingredients and the retail pages just have the retailer name, adress and content details. Question is, should I add noindex to all the ingredient and or retailer pages so that the focus is entirely on the product pages? Thanks for you help!

Has there been a 'Panda' update in the UK?
My site in the UK suddenly dropped from page 1 and out of top 50 for all KWs using 'recliner' or a derivative. We are a recliner manufacturer and have gained rank over 15 years, and of course using all white hat tactics. Did Google make an algo update in the Uk last week?

Quicksimpleinsurance.com is not getting any visibility in Bing/Yahoo! Any idea why? It's doing alright on Google.
I have a insurance wordpress blog that is not getting any visibility in Bing/Yahoo! It's roughly 2 years old and has been indexed in all three major search engines. It's doing alright in Google and actually showing some promising rankings. But it's nowhere to be seen on Yahoo!/Bing for any insurance related phrases. Any ideas what's wrong?
