Does putting content in tabs devalue it at all?
-
Hello! Still very new to the SEO world and just trying to soak in as much information as I can.
The site I work for took a substantial hit with the panda update, so we are looking into adding as much quality content as we can in the upcoming months.
With our current site layout, space will quickly become an issue. Assuming the content is relevant and useful for the page, will putting the content into tabs be counter productive or devalue it at all?

My concern with this video is that he says to make sure it is not pages and pages of content. Granted, not all of these guides are going to be super long and this will probably be one of the longest, but the first complete guide is just over 1000 words.

I understand exactly what you mean. Like underneath the product there is a box that has basic info and 5 tabs that say "Reviews - Detailed Info - Etc..." and when you click on the tab it shows you more content. This is perfectly acceptable for SEO. Just make sure that the tabs work in a way where all the content is there in the HTML and the tabs use Javascript to hide it/show it, so Search engines see it no matter what. Make sense? In other words, set your user-agent to googlebot and turn off everything and take a peek at your site and see what content you can see. YOu can do this via Webmaster Tools as well!

Can you show me the specific URL and example? That way I'll be able to answer clearly.

Thanks for the quick response! I should have mentioned this in the original post, but this is an ecommerce site.
A basic example would be a department/category page that shows products and sub-departments/categories. It would have a tab for a buying guide for that particular department or category. We aren't trying to add fluff and hide the guides from our customers, but we aren't sure what the best or "correct" tactic is to get the information on the most relevant pages.

I think I know what you're asking. Basically, using a "read more" type situation where the content is on the website in the code, but not visible to the user until they click on that area. Is that correct?
If so, the answer is no, it does not devalue the content at all, and you shouldn't be penalized for it.
Matt Cutts discusses this topic in this video:

Can you give me an example of "tabs"? Generally, drop downs and other forms of navigation do not hurt you. But please show me an accurate example so I can give you reliable information.

What is the best way to resolve duplicate content issue
Hi I have a client whose site content has been scraped and used in numerous other sites. This is detrimental to ranking. One term we wish to rank for is nowhere. My question is this: what's the quickest way to resolve a duplicate content issue when other sites have stolen your content? I understand that maybe I should firstly contact these site owners and 'appeal to their better nature'. This will take time and they may not even comply. I've also considered rewriting our content. Again this takes time. Has anybody experienced this issue before? If so how did you come to a solution? Thanks in advance.

Content by Country
Currently we have a news website aimed at several countries. We want to filter the content of some url (home, category pages, ...) using the country of origin of the visitor. For example in the home we've heard of global character, and a column with news of the country of origin of the visitor. This may affect the position or cause a Google penalty? thank you very much

Duplicate content and the Moz bot
Hi Does our little friend at SEOmoz follow the same rules as the search engine bots when he crawls my site? He has sent thousands of errors back to me with duplicate content issues, but I thought I had removed these with nofollow etc. Can you advise please.

Numbers above actual site content
Most pages on my website contain many numbers above the actual text on the page. This is useful for users and looks good on an actual view of the page. However, when a bot reads the page it appears as rows of numbers with a few sentences at the bottom of the page. Does having these number have a negative SEO effect? If so, should I change them to something such as an image so they aren't readable by search engines?

What is considered to be great quality content for e-commerce websites?
Hi there, At the moment I am building an e-commerce website selling a bunch of iphone accessories. I have been aware that great quality content is one of the most important factors for a site to stand out in the list of search results especially when it comes to google's latest panda update. I was wondering what is considered to be great quality content for e-commerce websites? It would be great if you could share some ideas about how to build/create fantastic content for e commerce websites. Many thanks!
