Mobile Web Sites
-
Hi
I have started offering customers a mobile app view of their existing websites using sencha touch which works well.
On visiting the website if a user visits via a mobile device they access the mobile app view of the site.
I am looking for some best practice please - as many of the customers already have hosting with their existing website so would it be possible to use a subdomain of
which will point to the mobile website which will be hosted on our servers in the cloud.
Or is the only alternative to use a subdomain for their mobile sites because they are hosted with us in the cloud of
Many Thanks

Which direction things are headed is very dependent on the type of websites you're building and the type of clients you're serving. A mobile stylesheet is much more feasible in many situations, and provides quite a few SEO benefits as outlined above. Here is a quote from Google Engineer John Mueller stating that single URL is preferred.
That said, if you're going to go the route of m.domain.com, then you need to implement rel="canonical" on the mobile site and the desktop site, with the desktop site URL being the canonical URL.
Make sure you have a proper redirect on the desktop version of the site that sends mobile users over to the m.domain.com version. From there, I would read the two Google resources below to make sure the Google Mobile Bot can access everything, and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the reply - but I feel this space is moving toward more app like mobile views hence the platforms like jquerymobile / senchatouch coming more to the fore.
If you have a .mobi version of the site built on the jquerymobile platform will Google understand that its a mobile version of the site therefore there would be no duplicate content issues? or do you need to carry out additional steps?

I personally don't like the use of subdomains for mobile content, unless there's some sort of functionality that makes it a much different site than the desktop version. If subdomains are done incorrectly it can cause issues with duplicate content and splitting link value between mobile and normal. I'm going to paste a response I wrote for a different question regarding mobile redirection here:
If it's a normal website, not something dynamic that requires HTML5 / app-style functionality, then the best practice in my opinion is to display a different stylesheet based upon device (screen size, basically). This avoids duplicate content issues, rel canonical implementation, and page authority getting split between normal & mobile versions of the site.
Check out this article from Smashing Magazine regarding designing for mobile:

The section marked "CLIENT-SIDE METHODS & MEDIA QUERIES" explains how to do it, it's basically paraphrasing the original article on A List Apart.

Requirements for mobile menu design have created a duplicated menu in the text/cache view.
Hi, Upon checking the text cache view of our home page, I noticed the main menu has been duplicated. Please see: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.trinitypower.com&strip=1 Our coder tells me he created one version for the desktop and one for the mobile version. Duplicating the menu cannot be good for on page SEO. With that said, I have had no warnings reported back from Moz. Maybe the moz bots are not tuned to looks for such a duplication error. Anyway, the reason the coder created a different menu for mobile in order to support the design requirements. I did not like the look and feel of the responsive version created based on the desktop version. Hi solution to this problem is to convert the Mobile version menu into ajax. what do you guys think? Thanks, Jarrett

New site or fix the old one
I have a delima. Basically the main business product I used to offer is not going to be offered anymore. The types of sales events we conducted for auto dealerships are not able to be insured any longer forcing the change. So I am pivoting to just offering direct mail and I plan on going into digital probably social, landing pages, content marketing and not sure what else. I was able to register http:www.roiautos.com and www.roidirectmail.com both variations of www.roiautosolutions.com withc was the original site. Also that is the closest to the actual name of the business. My question is whether to build a site focusing on direct mail using the direct mail dot com, or just to redo the current site. The current site doesn't have much rank if any because the old product was not something that was searched for. As a mater of fact 99% of my business came from referrals and word or mouth so I just never really bothered. My thoughts are that ROI Direct Mail will work better for search and I am even going to use that as a DBA and TM. But I am unsure of what to do for search. One thing that has to happen is that all references to offering staffed sales events have to be removed from any site per my insurance company. Any advice?

Web Designer Needed
So I feel like I've almost convinced my boss to hire out a re-design for our website (which is SORELY needed.) I'm at the step where I need to start finding quotes and site builders. I want a responsive design site built modern and professional... Love the moz site but not responsive enough. My current favorite example is at www.hasoffers.com Does anybody have any suggestions of where to go? And as a bonus, if anybody is brave enough to ballpark what a site like this would cost that would be awesome. Doesn't have to be exact or even that close... Thanks for any advice given.

Visits to Site and Serps?
Do google and bing factor in how many people visit your site per month to determine your serps rankings? If so, does it matter if they visit your site by searching a keyword phrase or by typing in the name in the search bar? My instinct tells me that if the search engine sees 1000 hits per month for a site by keyword phrase and that is high for the industry then they might rank that site higher in the serps. I was wondering if the same would be true if the site is designed and coded properly for a keyword phrase but receives the same 1000 hits per month from visitors typing in the sites name in the search field rather than the search phrase, would that then translate to higher rankings for the keyword phrase? Thanks for your help.

Will launching this site get my E-commerce site penalized?
Hello.. I am wondering if you guys think launching a site like this is a good or a bad idea. All of the links on it go directly to the exact corresponding page on the ecommerce site. Do you think Google will penalize my site for launching sites (i have many other domains that i will be setting up similar to this) like this? Thanks...

Alternatives to Wordpress for updating content of a static html site
I have a static html site which I cannot update myself. What solutions/ programs would you recommend for gaining the ability to update it myself? I'm reluctant to switch to WordPress because the sites that use any CMS that are hosted by my web hosting company get routinely hacked. Thank you!
