How can I tell which website pages are hosted on the root domain vs the www subdomain?
-
One of the SEOmoz help desk professionals told me this today regarding some of my website pages.
"it looks like you have pages hosted as separate pages on both the root domain and the www subdomain, which means that these pages are competing for rankings and authority. You may want to consider a 301 redirect or the use of rel=canonical tags.".
Can anyone help me understand this? How can I tell which pages are which?
-
Thanks Dr. Meyers. I did a 301 redirect for everything to go to www. Hopefully that fixes it. Thank You!

Did something change recently? I'm currently seeing your non-www pages 301-redirect to the "www." version, at least in a handful of cases. There are a couple of oddities where a page double-301s, but that looks isolated. I'm not seeing any clear signs of a problem.
You don't need both canonicals and 301s for this particular issue, although a canonical tag can still have value on other parts of the site (including the home-page).
-
Yes I would do both. If your goal is to standardize to either www or non-www, then redirect to one or the other. This will assure new backlinks go to the desired version. The canoicalization should standardize the link power on Google's end.
-
Thanks Andrew. Would you recommend doing 301 redirects as well as canonical tags?
-
Chances are they aren't separate pages. canonical tags are what you want to use. They essentially combine different ways of getting to your pages into 1 indexable page. So
all point to the same page, but if you put in the section, no matter how the crawler got there, it should consider the page www.example.com, which means you wont have the competing pages issue.
-
Hi Nakul,
Thank you for that. According to SEOmoz definition of a subdomain......the only subdomain I have would be WWW
She also told me this.
I can tell that you have two separate pages set up for the subdomain and the root domain because when I go to http://www.austintenantadvisors.com/ and http://austintenantadvisors.com/, both pages are live URLs that don't redirect from one to the either and neither page has a canonical tag in the source code. In fact, it looks like all of the pages on your site live on both the www subdomain and also the root domain separately. You should look into fixing this issue before you decide how to set up the campaign because the way you choose to correct the issue will decide where the pages are actually hosted, which is how you choose how to base your campaign. For example, if you decide to have the www pages redirect to the non-www pages, you will want to set the campaign up as a root domain campaign or we won't crawl past the redirect. One thing to take in to consideration when redirecting these pages is to see which version is ranking in the search engines. Here is a good resource about redirecting pages on your site from Google Webmaster Tools
Can you recommend the best course of action?
1. Redirect www pages to the non-www pages OR
2.. Redirect non-www pages to www pages
-
Do a site:yourdomain.com and then do a site:subdomain.yourdomain.com and you should be able to find the pages you are referring to. Doing a site:www.yourdomain.com will only show pages from www presuming non www is set to correctly redirect to www and the preferred display URL is set in Google as the one with www. I hope this helps.

Sub Directories Domain & Page Crawl Depth
Hi, I just bought an old domain with good backlinks and authority, that domain was technology product formerly. So, I want to make this domain for my money site. The purpose of this website is to serve technological information like WordPress tutorial and etc (free software or drivers). And I just installed a sub directory on this domain like https://maindomain.com/subdirectory/ and this directory I made for a free software like graphics drivers download (NVIDIA or AMD). What you think with this website? Is it make sense? Wait, I just added this domain to my campaign at MOZ and the result shown my sub directory was 6 times of crawl depth. Is it good for directory or I need to move the sub directory to my main site? Thank you, hope someone answer my confuse. Best Regard, Matthew.

301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
Hi All, I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation: Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version) Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind: 99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories. New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain. Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix. Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change. Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee. Look forward to your comments. Mike

Changing Domain Host and Potential SEO Effects
Hi Community, We are currently thinking of changing our domain hosting package and I am wondering if that could have any effects on rankings, SEO, etc. The thing here is that we aren't changing the hosting provider, we are only changing the package from the same provider. Most of the info I have found on the internet has been mostly about changing actual hosting providers versus packages from the same provider (if the makes sense). If anyone knows if this might affect our SEO and what steps we can take to safe guard against any potential pitfalls, please let us know. Thanks

International Image SEO - one host vs multiple hosts
I've got 3 sites (same name) located in Australia, US and UK. Currently these sites are all pulling images (I own) from 1 location. I'd like to create image XML sitemaps for each of these sites. As I see it, my options are: 1. Keeping the images hosted in the 1 place and creating image XML sitemaps for each of the 3 sites (which seems to be technically ok because https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/178636?hl=en&ref_topic=20986 states that if the image URL isn't on the same domain, both domains need to be verified in Webmaster Tools). However, is there a risk here that the sitemaps will conflict because they are pulling from images on the same host? 2. Hosting the images locally (ie. the same images will be hosted in 3 locations) and applying hreflang in the sitemap. Does anyone know which of these options are best (obviously #1 would be more convenient), or whether there are any other options for attacking this issue? Thanks!

Hi, If I do a search in Google - for one our products on our site, our site comes up - but it would appear that google is adding our domain name as a suffix to our title in the results... Anyone else seen this? Can I do anything about it? I would prefer it not to appear. Thanks!

Pricing Page vs. No Pricing Page
There are many SEO sites out there that have an SEO Pricing page, IMO this is BS. A SEO company cannot give every person the same quote for diffirent keywords. However, this is something we are currently debating. I don't want a pricing page, because it's a page full of lies. My coworker thinks it is a good idea, and that users look for a pricing page. Suggestions? If I had to build one (which I am debating against) is it better to just explain why pricing can be tricky? or to BS them like most sites do?
