How much (%) of the content of a page is considered too much duplication?
-
Google is not fond of duplication, I have been very kindly told. So how much would you suggest is too much?
-
I would not use a canonnical for your www v non www, use a 301
there is a tutorial there also to fix the index.html problem also, these tutorials are for micdrosoft iis server, if you have linux, you need to find the htaccess alternatives.
I always go for the non www, as www is of no use, so why have it, but for you i would look at what your links point to.

Hi Alan
Thankyou for taking the time to offer advice to me. I have read your pages and it does raise some interesting points. One that although basic, is one I haven't yet paid much attention to is the issue of "The choice of www or non-www".
This is interesting in respect of how I set my canonical tags up. I noticed that I rank differently for www.waspkilluk.co.uk than for www.waspkilluk.co.uk/index. So it seems I need to add a canonical tag there. I guess index is my home page - but then isn't the root domain also my default homepage?
In fact - do you think you should set up canonical tags without the www. or won't this work?
Sorry for creating questions from questions.
Warm Regards
Simon

Hi James
I have had a thorough study of this issue today and your ideas have proved fruitful. I checked out the article by Matt Cutts http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/canonical-link-tag/ and then read the article by Rand Fishkin. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps.
it will take a few weeks to implement across the thousand or so pages I have, but it will be interesting to see how or if, it finally affects the root domains ranking.
Many thanks
Simon

James gives a good response.
i have a few tutorial pages, where a lot of the instuctions are the same, but the are still indexed and rank.
It maybe a guide of what you can get a way with
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-domain-name-issues
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-issues-involving-the-trailing-slash
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-issues-involving-the-upper-and-lower-case -
It is hard to give an accurate percentage, in my eyes if you want to be in the clear just make unique content on pages if it is not unique content then place a canonical tag to the right page.
I mean Google is coming down harder and harder on sites for poor quality content/duplicant content if you play by the rules and do things right tit will be a long term strategy.

Why is my home page ranking much higher than my collection page?
Hi everyone, Why is my client's home page ranking high for a certain keyword phrase rather than a collection page I have which is well optimised for this keyword? The collection page is on the 10th SERPs page. I did see there were keywords used in the footer of page and the keyword was also used in some intro text on the home page so I removed the keyword from these two places nearly 2 weeks ago and requested google to reindex both the collection page and home page and I've not seen any improvement of the collection page's ranking in SERPs. I also changed the meta description and meta title as the ctr was poor but there wasn''t that many impressions either. It is a competitive keyword organically so maybe the collection page's authority is just not good enough compared to the competitors hence why they are choosing the home page as it has higher page authority however this still is not helpful to searchers who land on home page. Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can do to get google to rank the ocllection page higher for the keyword instead of home page?

Http vs. https - duplicate content
Hi I have recently come across a new issue on our site, where https & http titles are showing as duplicate. I read https://moz.com/community/q/duplicate-content-and-http-and-https however, am wondering as https is now a ranking factor, blocked this can't be a good thing? We aren't in a position to roll out https everywhere, so what would be the best thing to do next? I thought about implementing canonicals? Thank you

Duplicate page content errors for Web App Login
Hi There I have 6 duplicate content errors, but they are for the WebApp login from our website. I have put a Noindex on the Sitemap to stop google from indexing them to see if that would work. But it didn't. These links as far as I can see are not even on the website www.skemaz.net, but are links beyond the website and on the Web App itself eg : <colgroup><col width="529"></colgroup>

How do i prevent Google and Moz from counting pages as duplicates?
I have 130,000 profiles on my site. When not Connected to them they have very few differences. So a bot - not logged in, etc, will see a login form and "Connect to Profilename" MOZ and Google call the links the same, even though theyre unique such as example.com/id/328/name-of-this-group example.com/id/87323/name-of-a-different-group So how do i separate them? Can I use Schema or something to help identify that these are profile pages, or that the content on them should be ignored as its help text, etc? Take facebook - each facebook profile for a name renders simple results: https://www.facebook.com/public/John-Smith https://www.facebook.com/family/Smith/ Would that be duplicate data if facebook had a "Why to join" article on all of those pages?

URL Parameters Duplicate Page Title
Thanks in advance, I'm getting duplicate page titles because seomoz keeps crawling through my url parameters. I added forcefiltersupdate to the URL parameters in webmaster tools but it has not seemed to have an effect. Below is an example of the duplicate content issue that I am having. http://qlineshop.com/OC/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_62&forcefiltersupdate=true&checkedfilters[]=a.13.13.387baf0199e7c9cc944fae94e96448fa Any thoughts? Thanks again. -Patrick

Duplicate blog content and NOINDEX
Suppose the "Home" page of your blog at www.example.com/domain/ displays your 10 most recent posts. Each post has its own permalink page (where you have comments/discussion, etc.). This obviously means that the last 10 posts show up as duplicates on your site. Is it good practice to use NOINDEX, FOLLOW on the blog root page (blog/) so that only one copy gets indexed? Thanks, Akira

Removing Duplicate Page Content
Since joining SEOMOZ four weeks ago I've been busy tweaking our site, a magento eCommerce store, and have successfully removed a significant portion of the errors. Now I need to remove/hide duplicate pages from the search engines and I'm wondering what is the best way to attack this? Can I solve this in one central location, or do I need to do something in the Google & Bing webmaster tools? Here is a list of duplicate content http://www.unitedbmwonline.com/?dir=asc&mode=grid&order=name http://www.unitedbmwonline.com/?dir=asc&mode=list&order=name
