Setting up a Blog - Guest Authors
-
I am planning on setting up a blog in the next couple months. We would like to have 10 different categories that professionals can write about and submit articles. Any suggestions on which blogging software to put on the site. So far I have heard of WordPress and Joomla. (Not sure which is the best version) We want it to maybe have the bloggers logo or pictures, date, etc. None of us have had any experience with this so we needed some input.
I have been reading everywhere that blogging is huge for SEO and so I just wanted to improve ours plus maybe drive more traffic with a high level blog for professionals. Any ideas or even books that I should go purchase to study up. When we do this it would be great to get it set up properly from the get go.

I would recommend Wordpress for the same reasons as Moosa and Tommy.
As for books, I would suggest reading Content Rules as this not only discussing blogging but also other useful content such as Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks etc which can all boost SEO.
Best of luck in your blogging adventures! Enjoy.

I use Wordpress and recommend it to clients. As well as the advantages already listed you will find it very easy to set up author/contributor accounts for your regular writers in order to streamline the publishing process.

If I would be at your place and I would have given a choice to select one platform bwtween Wordpress and Joomal then my vote will be for Wordpress!
User and SEO Friendly:
WP is more user friendly not only for the user but SEO friendly URLs, SPAM filter for Comments, easy to create post and pages which is not that easy to use in Joomla and then they have so much issues with URLs that somehow contain duplicate URLs!
Plug-ins:
The plugin directory of WP is way bigger as compare to Joomla. With wordpress the admin have multiple choices on one thing which is rear in Joomla!
Fast and Quick Updates:
WP is up-to-date and takes you with the current environment! With Jommla this game is not that simple!
Customization:
With Joomla and WP the customization is possible but (thinking from a developer’s brain) Joomla is way more difficult as compare to WP as they contain clean and clear code!
These are just few out of many differences that you can come up with by simple Googling a bit about it!

Hi!
My recommendation is absolutely Wordpress. You get access to hundreds of great SEO plugins and it´s very easy to work with.
Reading and plugins for Wordpress - http://yoast.com/wordpress/.
Simple platform = more time for blogging.
Good Luck!

URL Parameters Settings in WMT/Search Console
On an large ecommerce site the main navigation links to URLs that include a legacy parameter. The parameter doesn’t actually seem to do anything to change content - it doesn’t narrow or specify content, nor does it currently track sessions. We’ve set the canonical for these URLs to be without the parameter. (We did this when we started seeing that Google was stripping out the parameter in the majority of SERP results themselves.) We’re trying to best strategize on how to set the parameters in WMT (search console). Our options are to set to: 1. No: Doesn’t affect page content’ - and then the Crawl field in WMT is auto-set to ‘Representative URL’. (Note, that it's unclear what ‘Representative URL’ is defined as. Google’s documentation suggests that a representative URL is a canonical URL, and we've specifically set canonicals to be without the parameter so does this contradict? ) OR 2. ‘Yes: Changes, reorders, or narrows page content’ And then it’s a question of how to instruct Googlebot to crawl these pages: 'Let Googlebot decide' OR 'No URLs'. The fundamental issue is whether the parameter settings are an index signal or crawl signal. Google documents them as crawl signals, but if we instruct Google not to crawl our navigation how will it find and pass equity to the canonical URLs? Thoughts? Page / Domain Authority Question
If my website were to purchase a sponsored article on a site with a powerful domain authority that contained a do-follow link, and the link would be "domain.com/articles/new-article" ... obviously new-article would have 0 page authority, being new... is that still considered a valuable link and why or why not?

Can anyone explain what the blog network penalties news is about please?
I have seen the latest news about Google penalizing blog networks and as a newbie starting out am wondering if my multi-site plans would constitute as a blog network. My question is, is having a couple of external blogs on keyword rich domains pointing back at my primary domain name considered to be a blog network of the kind that Google is penalizing?

Blog links - follow or nofollow?
I need my memory refreshed here! Say, I've got a blog and some of the posts have links to recommended external sites and content. Should these be nofollowed? They're not paid links or anything like that, simply things relevant to the post.

Rel= Author : Google suggests that we include this. Can i link to my FB profile
There have been several reference on how Google is trying to build author profiles so that it can effectively measure the authors authority based on the Rel=Author. I quite liked this idea , but my site is a user generated content website. So how can i leverage this ? . One thing which i was thinking was if its a good idea to link to the customers Facebook profile , plan to collect this during sign up.

Is blogging enough to keep my site fresh?
I know that one of the things Google looks for is fresh content. My main site is a wordpress site where I have optimized about 12 static pags and I also do blog posts. Assuming I continue to blog, do I need to give my pages a periodic "face lift" or is enough just to keep blogging and add a static page from time to time? Paul
