Bounce rate calculation
-
Could anyone help out with a bounce rate query please. A website of mine, an affiliate website offering product reviews, has a bounce rate of 82%. I am puzzled a little as to how this is calculated. Is it only a bounce if the user goes from the search engine to my site and then back to the search engine? Or would search engine to my sites to the affiliates site via the link on my sites also count as a bounce? With a site of this nature the goal would be to get as many people visiting the merchant as possible and so a high level of bounce from me to them would be ideal
Thanks, Carl

Google does differentiate between a link that takes you to another page on the site vs. a link that takes you off site. However, the affiliate links take you off the site, and therefore classifies as a bounce.
However, if someone goes to the home page, then another page on your site, then an affiliate, it is not a bounce.
I wouldn't worry about the bounce rate at all. That doesn't seem to be an important metric for what you're looking at.

What is Google Analytics telling you about those pages?
I would think not since the visitor took an action from a link on the page. Once the link on the page is clicked, it effectively closes the loop that was created when the page was entered. You might not have a high time on page, but hopefully you'd get "credit" for action taken and not be classified as a bounce.
Having said that, I don't know if Google differentiates between clicking on a page link that takes you to another page on the site versus a page link that takes you off the site.
I forgot to the attribute the above information to Google Analytics. You might dig around GWT to see if they offer more specifics.
I used to the think we get dinged in SERPS for bounce rate. But since a visitor may land on a relevant page and get all the information they need and then leave, it makes sense that very little if any importance would be attributed to bounces in Google's algorithm.

So, you feel that a user coming to a website via whatever method of entry and clicking from the site to a merchants via and affiliate link would still be classified as a bounce?

Bounce Rate
The Bounce Rate is the percentage of bounced visits to your site.
A bounce is calculated as a single-page view or single-event trigger in a session or visit.
The following situations qualify as bounces:
- A user clicks on a link deep into your site sent by a friend, reads the information on the page, and closes the browser.
- A user comes to your home page, looks around for a minute or two, and immediately leaves.
- A user comes directly to a reference page on your site from a web search, leaves the page available in the browser while completing other tasks in other browser windows and the session times out.
Time on page will be 00:00 if no actions are taken on the page, no matter how much time or scrolling is done on the page.

I'm not sure if bounce rate is one of the user experience factors along with page loading time and time on page.
-
There is no real evidence that I've seen, at least at this point, that Google considers bounce rate as a ranking factor. I could be wrong, but I've never seen anything that supported that. Don't worry about that at all.
Bounce rate, for sure, has nothing to do with SERPs, and is exclusively measured by someone landing on your site and not moving to another internal page.
-
Thanks that's along the lines of my thinking. Although given google considers the bounce rate as ranking factor I hope it's just the bounce rate from and to the serps and doesn't include affiliate links
-
A bounce is any time someone comes to your site and leaves without hitting a second page on your site. If they come to you and click an affiliate link, that's a bounce.
So, you really don't count a bounce rate to someone. You should have some analytics tool for the affiliate which will help you see how much traffic you're giving them. Bounce rate probably isn't something that you probably need to worry about.
That help?

Need your Opinion on Bounce Rate Analysis
I'm currently doing a bounce rate analysis for our resource pages. These are information article pages - mix of plain texts and those containing either images, infographics, videos or even podcasts. By the way, I did search for bounce rate topics here, but I felt like i still need to post this. Unless I've overlooked a similar post, my apologies. It's a first for me to do an in-depth BR analysis, so I need to clarify few things. What is a good or bad range bounce rate? Is there even a range comparison? Like when can you say a bounce rate is high for an information type page? I've read some stuff online but they're confusing. What other Analytics factors should I consider looking at together with bounce rate? For pages (which purposely educate visitors) with high bounce rate, can you guys suggest tips to improve it? I would appreciate and value any advise. Thanks a lot!

In Google Analytic Experiment I want to Judge Performance of Page Along with Pageviews, Bounces, Transaction etc
Hi All, For my ecommerce site for mobile site category page I have redesign the page in 2 different ways so one original page and 2 new designs. Now I want to do A/B testing with google experiment. I want to measure performance of page via pageviews, bounce rate, exit rate, conversion rate, add to basket etc. Now in objective for this experiment I can select anyone thing either Pageviews, or bounces or transaction or goal. So my query is 1) I cannot select all objective together? 2) or for same page I have to create too many experiments by selecting each objective? 3) exit rate or add to basket objective is not in experiment list so? Thanks!

Bounce Rate: what is it EXACTLY?
Hi everyone: we all know the term 'Bounce Rate'. I'd like to think i have a good idea of what BR is....but some things are not really clear to me. Time to call in the experts. Question #1: What EXACTLY will stop Google from considering the visit as a bounce? As discussed not too long ago in this topic https://moz.com/community/q/will-this-fix-my-bounce-rate

Ruben wrote: "..what it basically means is that someone clicks on your SERP, and then clicks back to google? But, it doesn't matter if they spent 10 minutes on your page or 10 seconds" Jessica Conflitti wrote a reply in which she basically said that it might be a good idea to have visitors click to a different page OR a PDF-file. That's where my confusion has been for some time now: Clicking on a PDF-document, an image in the page that opens with Fancybox, a link to a different domain? Or can it only be a different URL on the same domain? The way i would expect it to be:
Pages contain the GA-tracking code. So am i right by thinking that Google needs to have the same GA-tracking code to be loaded twice? Because only at that point will they have two datapoints. And only then will they be able to tell that the visitor hasn't left. By clicking a PDF-document - as described by Jessica - you wouldn't load the GA-code twice. So I would expect that clicking a PDF does not make a difference for the BR. Don't get me wrong: i like the article but it is this detail that throws me off. IF Google can read or capture these clicks, what other elements can be used to reduce bounce rate? Clicking on a YouTube-video embedded in the page? I'm asking this because i want to get this right. Question #2: how much weight does BR have on Time on Page, Engagement, etc? We know Google is taking a lot of things into consideration when calculating the value of a URL or domain. So how much should we care for BR if we know the Time on Page is good and a large percentage of people are frequently returning? How about your experiences or knowledge on that? Really looking forward to your replies and help on clearing this topic for me. And perhaps some other readers as well! Bas0 -
Title Tag Capitalization Impact on SERP Rankings and Click Through Rates
My company made a branding decision to use lowercase for all of our title tags. This, of course, means that our titles on SERPs are all lower case. Overwhelmingly, it seems that websites use title case. This makes me wonder if we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Does using lower case titles negatively impact our rankings and/or click through rates? Is there any data out there suggesting that title case has a better click through rate than lower case? Thanks for reading!

Why do I have a lot of direct traffic from MSN and Yahoo with 100% bounce rate?
For MSN I have about 8000 hits of one page and a 100% bounce rate. In the last month I have about 400 hits from Yahoo with a 100% bounce rate. Msn is all different pages, while Yahoo is all the home page. What would cause this?

Are Click-Through rates & Bounce Rates as Ranking Metrics ?
There are lots of articles around but I would prefer to see what everyone here has to say about it. Are they ranking metrics ( directly or In-directly )? If they are then how to get it right? Can i depend on Google In-page analytic? What is an acceptable Bounce rate for a home page ? What is an average click through rate for your landing page ? thanks

Bounce rates plummeted
In Google Analytics, my average bounce rates plummeted basically overnight. I went from a consistent average daily bounce rate of about 65% to an average daily bounce rate near 5%. My average number of visitors has stayed the same. I don't think there is any significant change I made to my site that may have caused this. Has anyone else had the same problem and know why it happened and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!
