Hello Peter,
Best practice is to avoid looking like a thin affiliate site. That means making the content very useful and unique, obviously, but also linking out via non-affiliate links to other resources as well. In situations where you have several followable links going out to high-quality, trustworthy sites about the topic I have not found it necessary to hide or redirect affiliate links. I used to advise putting the js that controlled the redirect into an external .js file within a /script folder and then blocking that folder, but have found that Google still executes the javascript (they have to or they wouldn't be able to navigate half the sites out there) even if the file is blocked.
However, if your site is mostly affiliate links (like a review site) and you don't feel comfortable with, or don't have time, to link out to trusted resources and create unique, useful content that provides a lot of value, then I would recommend going ahead and using some type of redirect script. In my opinion you'd be better off going with an ad management tool of some sort over an known affiliate redirect script or plugin, which may raise a red flag right away.
Long story short: There is nothing wrong with sending links through a redirect first if you want to track the clicks and other metrics. I just wouldn't use a tool called "affiliate cloaking script" or something like that.
Good luck.

sorry there seems to be some confusion. I don't mean backlinks, I mean affiliate links... like www.affiliateprogram.com/userid?peterm22

I'd have to agree with this - content is king for attracting back links. 8 )

Hi Peter; my best shot is: focus on your blog´s content and not your affiliate links. Wordpress is a great tool to do that!
Once you have great contents, people will start to back-link to you

Webmaster tools not showing links but Moz OSE is showing links. Why can't I see them in the Google Search Console
Hi, Please see attached photos. I have a website that shows external follow links when performing a search on open site explorer. However, they are not recognised or visible in search console. This is the case for both internal and external links. The internal links are 'no follow' which I am getting developer to rectify. Any ideas why I cant see the 'follow' external links? Thanks in advance to those who help me out. Jesse T7dkL5s T7dkL5s OkQmPL4 3qILHqS

Different links to ultimately the same page on Magento
Hi Everyone, I'm wondering if some of you could help me out a bit here as I'm a bit consfused. If you please take a quick look at my site: https://tesorotiles.co.uk the way it's setup is that you can get to the same page via 3 or 4 different routes as below: https://tesorotiles.co.uk/type/wall-tiles/rho https://tesorotiles.co.uk/by-area/bathroom-tiles/rho https://tesorotiles.co.uk/collections/rho These 3 are the exact same page and we've done it this way to make sure there is no break in the breadcrumb. Is this ok SEO wise or anyone have any recommendation. Thanks in advance

Affiliate Link is Trumping Homepage - URL parameter handling?
An odd and slightly scary thing happened today: we saw an affiliate string version of our homepage ranking number one for our brand, along with the normal full set of site-links. We have done the following: 1. Added this to our robots.txt : User-agent: *

Disallow: /*? 2. Reinserted a canonical on the homepage (we had removed this when we implemented hreflang as had read the two interfered with each other. We haven't had canonical for a long time now without issue. Is this anything to do with the algo update perhaps?! The third thing we're reviewing I'm slightly confused about: URL Parameter Handling in GWT. As advised - with regard to affiliate strings - to the question: "Does this parameter change page content seen by the user?" We have NO selected, which means they should be crawling one representative URL. But isn't it the case that we don't want them crawling or indexing ANY affiliate URLs? You can specify Googlebot to not crawl any of particular string, but only if you select: "Yes. The parameter changes the page content." Should they know an affiliate URL from the original and not index them? I read a quote from Matt Cutts which suggested this (along with putting a "nofollow" tag in affiliate links just in case) Any advice in this area would be appreciated. Thanks.0 -
Exchange Links - Problem or Not ?
There's a company that sells a real estate portal sites ready for several companies.

And when they install this system they always leave each site in a file calledimobiliarias.php that lists all properties that use your system, so there is a hugeexchange of links between the same sites.
So you can see with the Open Site Explorer that all sites have the same Backlinks.
This would not cause problems with regard to exchange links?
Loss of position or something? Thank you guys.! Sorry. 😛 Google Translator.0 -
Forum Profile Links
Are they really important? Many preach they are, and there are tonnes of services out there who give you thousands of forum profile links in no time. I strictly believe in genuine links built the hard way, and definitely don't want to get into anything which is black hat. Please suggest if building several Forum Profile Links is an appropriate way of building links?

Nofollow internal links
Hi, we have problems with having too many links on page. Our website has a menu with 3 level sub-navigation drop down for categories which we want to maintain, for easy-navigation for the users. http://www.redwrappings.com.au/ After reading this article: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru, and some other articles, we came up with a solution. We can easily reduce the number of links per page by putting 'nofollow' on our categories links menu dropdown and create a separate 'landing page' that contains links to these categories (and allow 'follow' links for robots). Is it wise to do this? Or any better, easy solution that you can suggest? Thanks
