Link building for eCommerce

I have an engraving site where I am looking to increase traffic/ sales. We do local engraving services and sell engraved products via eCommerce. Perfectindesign.com
It seems to me that locally I can't compete since most search terms are washed over with every local directory in and around the city that are selling there memberships.
So I thought I could compete nationally via the 200 products we carry.
I have used site explorer to go through my competitors links. My findings show that other then their twitter accounts and dmoz listing most everything else are paid links and lots of them.
Keeping in mind I have 45 root domains with 411 links to my site.
Three competitors links data. I probably shouldn't name them right?
competitor #1 1k root with 13.9k links
competitor # 2 147 root with 16k links
competitor # 3 427 root with 28k
Should I just start buying these links that range from $10-50 per link or is this a waste of time?
Are these truly my competitors or am I comparing my tiny site to the major leagues?

I agree with Bradkrussell, don't buy links, i own an eCommerce i have ranked #1 for 5 best keywords in that market and suddenly lost for #1 Goggle for that 5 keywords and lost 30% of my visitor, and now my visitor has normal again even when i still lost my ranks.
I see your website and i found your website hasn't friendly url for example http://www.perfectindesign.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=30 just try Nakul advice visitor not only comes from head keywords, i lost head keywords rank but now my visitor get normal even better than before, just make your website riched with keywords and done with good optimization,

I just don’t believe on this mantra of ‘don’t buy links!’ here is my detailed opinion on your case.
1st Its good to look in to competitor’s links but blindly building foot printing links can be dangerous as may be they just have quantity of links with low quality. I believe quality of links can easily surpass quantity and this is how new websites beat old giants in SERPs.
So I would recommend you to plan and build Free but quality links from high authority websites in your niche. Just by looking into your website I came up with an idea of link bait that can help you attract many links from different high authority domains.
You can design custom cups (or something like that) that target different giant websites (non commercial) websites and contact them to pass the ‘thank you memento’ for providing such an amazing information over the past few years (like Mashable provide amazing information in the search and social industry) and if you do it right they will probably talk about it and pass you a link from their website… in my opinion one link from mashable is way better them links from different lousy websites… (just an idea)
Another thing that can do is to fix your on-page optimization and content, up to the mark so that it works well with search engine as well as users.
You can also buy few links from different reputable paid directories (SEOmoz have the list of it on their website) so, yes! buying links from lousy websites will harm but paid directories is a win win game!
Conclusion words: follow the quality and you will beat your competitors even with less number of links from high authority websites.

Develop your own content that deserves to be read/shared, make sure your site is properly optimised (without going over the top) and focus on your own site, not your competitors.

Can you elaborate on building domain authority. Right now I have about 195 products. I can keep adding product after product but if they are at the bottom of page one or on page 2,3 or 38 it doesn't matter how many products I have.

I would analyze the top 10 competition not just your head keywords but also some long tail keywords and find opportunities.
If you look at your rankings for keywords like, I think it's also about making sure your pages are properly optimized. See your SERP ranking for https://www.google.com/search?q=medical+plaques
I would recommend using the http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/on-page-keyword-optimization/new tool here at SEOMoz to identify some oppurtunities and strengthen your on-page.
As far as Off-page is concerned, I would recommend you to be very careful and do some strategic link building instead of the outright link buying. There's a considerable risk involved. What you need to do is build domain authority, not try to rank via anchor text hyperlinks. Does that make sense ?

Can I include "commissioned" posts in my link building strategy?
Ok "Commissioned Posts" meaning industry influencers/bloggers etc writing about your brand, products or services and possibly "linking" to your website (in exchange for money, or not) a) I'm contacted by a blogger who wants to write a piece about our product and naturally links back. b) A blogger says, yes, we can write a fantastic article about your brand and link to you for $$$..$ - is this ok if not at scale? What is deemed as ethical? I want to make sure our link building campaign is done within Google's guidelines. Here is currently what we are doing, or intending to do; 1. We're producing unique content on our site and sharing this with key influencers organically on Twitter, Facebook and G+ communities. This so far is working well for a new start up. 2. Writing guest posts on authoritative sites (with only our author bio at the bottom, branded link to our site, social links) sharing knowledge or interesting content which readers will want to read. Sites like HuffPost, The Guardian would be great although we're starting on authoritative well maintained blogger sites within the industry to begin. 3. Reaching out to industry influencers who may like to review our products. Many of them have got back to me stating that they "can" run commissioned posts (normally requires a large fee) which carries a followed link, branded or unbranded. Although we may have initially contacted them, and money could be exchanged, in the eyes of Google wouldn't this appear as a natural post? Please let me know your thoughts on this? It would be great to gain more of an understanding exactly what I can or cannot do when it comes to developing high quality links for our business! How much should a link building program cost?
Hi All, I am relatively new to the world of SEO but it is vital to our business that we improve in this area. I believe our site architecture is good although we have a new site coming in the next few weeks which is effectively a re-skinning of the existing one that makes the user experience more relevant. What I would like to know is how much a link building program shoudl cost from an SEO provider and how they quantify what they charge - is there some kind of indicative cost per link or is it just "give us some money and we will do our best?" We have started writing daily articles on our news site and our natural listings are already pretty good. What I am looking to achieve is top three status for the London area (where we work) accross a broad range of keywords. I know this is what everyone wants but we are already front page and top 3 for many keywords and the back link building would appear to be where we are weaker compared to some of our competitors. Link Building & Moz metrices
I am just starting up so no flaming please. Okay so i was given a project and i was amused to see a lot of backlinks to the website with viagra pills title. This is why i assume the domain authority is very low. I tried asking a few website owners to drop the links but they said its a lot of manual work they wont do it(that was shocking) So what next? Would building authority links in any domains help me in this case?

Are you using ArticleBase.com for link building?
I'm digging my way through my competitors' link profiles on OSE and came across one that had been using a site called ArticleBase.com Apparently you can publish articles for free and browse other published articles for usage on your own site (provided you follow their TOS). It actually seems like a nifty idea. I'm wondering if anyone has utilized this site for re-publishing content and building external links. Worth the effort? Thanks!

Outsource Link Building?
Currently we are in the process of creating a new ecommerce website. The site is not live yet, but we have done all of the planning and brainstorming and now are just doing all of the dirty work to get things ready to go live. We are devoting a lot of time on merchandising and developing the site, but currently do not have the resources to put together a good link building campaign in house. Does anyone have any recommendations for outsourcing the link building? The last thing we want is to hire someone that submits to bad neighborhoods and only directories. Is there a good, better, best scenario we should be looking at for pricing, ect? Obviously, like most who are starting a new site, cost is an issue at least until the site gives some sort of sign of life. Also, we are in the Pittsburgh area. We don't need to go local with this, but if there is someone particularly good in the area it would be nice. Thanks in advance.

A few questions about link building?
1. Is it worth gaining more then 1 link on a website when link building, for example if I did a guest post on a blog, is it worth doing another guest post on the same blog linking to the same website? So 2 guest posts on 2 blogs, or 4 guest posts on 4 blogs? 2. When building links through guest blogging, you have two options, a link in the byline and a link in the content. Will a link in the content have more benefit then in the byline as its surrounded by relevant content? 3. Does having a link higher up the page have more benefit then one lower down?

Link Churn - where have all my links gone?
I am sure most of you have asked yourself the question I'm asking right now.. Where have all my links gone? I am starting to get twitchy now. I would estimate we have lost around 60% of our links in the past 3 weeks. Does anyone have any comeback stories? Feel like I am back to the start again. I have made a number of changes on the site not least removing a reciprical link page.. that had over 200 links on it but from reading one of Rand's tweets is it true that linking out could be good again?
