How to best remove old pages for SEO
-
I run an accommodation web site, each listing has its own page. When a property is removed what is the best way to handle this for SEO because the URL will no longer be valid and there will be a blank page.

Stephanie Chang posted on just this subject last month on the blog at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-should-you-handle-expired-content. Her post may help you with some ideas -- it was actually because of all of these types of questions in Q&A that she wrote the post.

It looks like your server is Linux possibly..Apache..running PHP.
If that's the case, you can build a page that you'd like to display for all pages that do not exist and upload it on the server as 404.php or whatever you might want to call it.
Then, add the following line in your .htaccess file.
ErrorDocument 404 /404.php
You are all set.
To me i looks like you are already set or doing this in some fashion. I checked to see if I visit http://www.visitdevonandcornwall.com/test and see what happens.
It gives me a friendly 404 and the HTTP Header is correct.
HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found => Server => cloudflare-nginx Date => Fri, 11 May 2012 17:17:51 GMT Content-Type => text/html Connection => close X-Powered-By => PHP/5.3.6 Expires => Thu, 19 Nov 1981 08:52:00 GMT Cache-Control => no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0 Pragma => no-cache Set-Cookie => __cfduid=d1b9e2169ed78a6697f752eef1c0a5ee01336756670; expires=Mon, 23-Dec-2019 23:50:00 GMT; path=/; domain=.www.visitdevonandcornwall.com

A home bodge job... url www.visitdevonandcornwall.com

What platform is your website ? You could also send me the URL via PM or post here and I can check.

I agree with the idea of the message, best user experience. Sadly people do not want their property showing, often because they change from a business to a residential property.
How do I show the page is a 404, is that a code snippet in the header or similar?
-
It would be best to make it a 404 or you could consider still having the property listed but mentioning it's no longer available and displaying similar / nearby / related properties on that page as long as it makes sense from both the usability / TOS and other business issues.
Think from a user's perspective. Let's say I took a URL of a property from your website and linked to it from my blog post where I am talking about my vacation or if I emailed it to friends/family. If that property is no longer available, what's a good user experience for people clicking on that link from my website or from my email. In my opinion, it might be a good idea to have a user friendly message saying that property is no longer available and displaying other related properties.
I hope that helps and makes sense.

In this situation, should I consolidate two pages into 1 for stronger SEO?
Hi, I have a site that has a categorized structure and products like this:
Technical SEO | | DGAU
/categoryA
/categoryA/product1
/categoryA/product2
/categoryA/product3
/categoryB
/categoryB/product1
/categoryB/product2
etc. The category pages have a list of the products within that category.
At the moment the category pages perform strongest SEO wise - ie these pages:
/categoryA
/categoryB Sometimes I get down to only having 1 product in each categotry like this:
/categoryA
/categoryA/product1 My Question:
Q: In this case is it a good idea to direct / redirect all traffic to the single product page - ie /categoryA/product1 ? BTW these are my reasons for thinking this this might be worthwhile:
• UX - User gets to the product page quicker with one less step
• Merging 2 pages with similar content together might somehow combine/consilidate the SEO strength and perform better in SERP. thanks in advance0 -
Pages removed from Google index?
Hi All, I had around 2,300 pages in the google index until a week ago. The index removed a load and left me with 152 submitted, 152 indexed? I have just re-submitted my sitemap and will wait to see what happens. Any idea why it has done this? I have seen a drop in my rankings since. Thanks

Removing links - Best practice
Hi I have noticed on webmaster that I have a lot of links to my sites from link building directories. Either I did this many years a go or somehow they've linked to me. Would links to link building directories harm my site? i.e linkspurt.com pingerati.net I have quite a few and just wondering what to do with them. Also I have some customer sites which are massive one site has 38,000 links coming to my site as I have put a credit that I built the site with a link back to mine. It has a low score in Google would this also harm my site? Any advise would be appreciated.

Testimonial pages
Is it better to have one long testimonial page on your site, or break it down into several smaller pages with testimonials? First time I've posted on the forum. But I'm excited! Ron

My home page 301 redirects - is this an SEO problem
When ever a browser calls my site canineconcepts.co.uk, it is automatically 301 redirected to canineconcepts.co.uk/en I am not sure if I should be concerned about this from an SEO perspective or not. Any thoughts?

We're working on a site that is a beer company. Because it is required to have an age verification page, how should we best redirect the bots (useragents) to the actual homepage (thus skipping ahead of the age verification without allowing all browsers)?
This question is about useragents and alcohol sites that have an age verification screen upon landing on the site.

301 redirect: Old pages to new
Hi, We have recently made some changes to our agency site. Looking in webmaster tools we have identified a number of old pages with existing link juice. Not a great deal mostly 32/100 PA. There are a mixture of URLs "meet the team" and people pages etc. The anchor text on the majority of pages is our brand name. Could we now 301 all these pages to one page, or is this a no no in the eyes of Google? Any help greatly appreciated. Best Regards Sean
