Www. compared to http://
-
Hey guys!
I'm pretty new to the community, and I had a quick question regarding URLs for my website. What would be the difference between using "http://" and "http://www." in my URL. I have done a little searching, but so far I haven't got a definite answer. Any input would be amazing, thanks again.

Greg's response is correct:
- Be consistent throughout the site - either use www or don't, but definitely don't switch back and forth.
- Implementing canonical tags is important, especially if you don't implement redirects as directed below (though you need to do both, preferably).
I have two additional concerns:
- Implement redirects. There should be sitewide redirects so that if you decided to use http://domain.com and a user types in http://www.domain.com, they are redirected. This should work for subpages as well, so http://www.domain.com/subfolder/page.html is redirected to http://domain.com/subfolder/page.html
- Be consistent with linking as well: If you decide to go without www, then make sure all of your link building activities do not include the www. in the links you use. While people will be redirected just fine, there is a small loss in value during that redirect and we want to get as much value from the links as possible. So, use the exact url you want linked, not a secondary version.

Hi Jason,
Consistency is going to be key when formatting your sites URLs. If you choose to use 'www' or 'non-www' there is not a difference. Where people run into trouble is not using 'rel=canonical' in the tag to show the search engines that 'www.yoursite.com' goes to 'yoursite.com' or vice versa. If you do not have these tags in place the search engines will view the page are two separate pages, and you will run into a duplicate content issue.
So to recap, be consistent and use the appropriate 'rel=canonical' tag and everything should turn out just fine.

Honest thoughts needed about link building / removal.
I have a small online business that has suffered through Google updates over the past year. Turns out that the links built by a previous SEO were harmful - yes, it's the usual story, I know. I've been in touch with an SEO about link removal/link building and have had a proposal. It's not cheap and I would need to dig deep, but it'll certainly be worth it if things work out. If it doesn't, it'll probably become impossible to continue the business. Personally speaking, it's a sorry situation. For link removal, the SEO's proposing to contact the webmasters followed by disavowing, if needed. There's 15k links, but I think a high percentage of these are from industry blogs that I sponsor that have site wide links. Have you heard many success stories about outsourced link removal? For link building, they will be targeting industry websites and blogs. The thing is, I know most of the industry bloggers anyway, and can probably reach out to them myself, if I can develop the right high quality content that they will want to feature. Call me a cynic, but I'm not sure how the SEO can do this. The quality of content on these blogs is extremely high as it's a very creative/visual industry that I'm involved in. I'm just not sure how much scope there is for a third party (with no knowledge of the industry) to do this effectively. That said, there's blogs that aren't directly related to my niche, and I suppose there's possible opportunity there. Maybe??! If the link removal is a good idea, am I better off trying to build links myself and combine that with the link removal service?

Is a no-follow link/sponsored link a good editorial link?
Ok maybe this is a dumb question. I really need some better, more quality backlinks pointing to my site. There is a site that has domain authority of 72, page rank 5 that is offering me a sponsored blog post. Do sponsored posts count as a good editorial link? Also what if they are no-follow (and how would I find out ahead of time), does that still give me link juice?

Why does my site only have 4 internal followed links/internal links?
When using Open Site Explorer my site is winning in many categories but lacking in others as compared to competitors. I intend to improve on this but am a little confused by the extremely low number of "internal followed links" and "internal links" at just 4. My competitors have much more than that. Does this mean links to the root domain? Total internal links? I have many internal links so I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. What four internal links are getting noticed? I just went through and changed all the links that went to index.html to link to the root domain at www.njlimocarservice.com as I just found a Q&A that indicates this was better. So as of Wed at 5:45 PM all my links to the homepage went to index.html and not the root which is no longer the case. Not sure if this matters. At the same time I also just put a 301 from index.html to redirect to www.njlimocarservice.com. Any help appreciated! h9QuF.png

Backlinking / Link Building Services
Hello, Our site is struggling organically and one of the key factors (not surprisingly) is a lack of backlinks. We have hired a content writer and are working on a content strategy to generate quality, relevant backlinks. But this is more of a long term project. After reviewing backlinks to our competitors' sites, it seems clear that they are using agencies or services to generate backlinks (most coming from low quality sites). I'm aware that this isn't a good long term strategy (although it seems to be serving them well at the moment). I was hoping the community could provide some insight on products or services out there that provide "safe" backlinking strategies. I don't want to do anything that is going to harm us in the future. I've read a bit on the hoth, and it seems fairly safe and potentially effective, but it's hard find much objective advice on the topic. Any insight is much appreciated - thanks in advance! Jason

We have links from our page at .com and .com/. Should we be concerned about this and try to merge?
When running link reports for our page .com, it redirects to .com/. We do have links for both URLs, but .com/ is significantly more than the other. Should we be concerned by this? Are we losing some links because of this?

"gimme links" = easy to fill out profile/personal reputation links that offer a do-follow anchor text flexible link
I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?

Domain/page authority - how long does it take so see results ?
Im new to the SEO and link building world. I have been building on my link building campaign over the last month or two but I am yet to see any changes in my domain/page authority. Is it because of the quality of the links, the directories I have been submitting in, webmasters maybe using "nofollow" tag ect. Or it generally just takes time to see the results? Is this even how domain/page authority is built. lol Any information on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Regards, S&M

What is the length for Open Explorer and/or Google to pick up on Blogroll links?
I'm just a little curious about this and thought I would make use of the new Q&A system. This is my first open question. I recently acquired some blogroll links on 3 fairly popular and well trafficked sites, some with more authority and pages than mine (Get Right Music). I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the time frame in which I should start to see that affect my rankings in Google. Also, the time frame when I should start to see those domain links appear in Open Site Explorer. I'm just curious. Thanks everyone. Jesse
