500 error codes caused by W3 Total Cache plugin?
-
Hello Everyone,
I operate a site (http://www.nationalbankruptcyforum.com) that has been receiving 500 error codes in Webmaster Tools as of late. This morning, webmaster tools showed 129 500 crawling errors. I've included one of the URLs that contained an error message here: http://www.nationalbankruptcyforum.com/marriage-and-bankruptcy/do-my-wife-and-i-both-have-to-file-for-bankruptcy/
I've been getting these errors now for about 3 weeks and they've mostly been on obscure, strange URLs (lots of numbers etc.) however, this morning they started showing up on pages that will actually be trafficked by users. I'm really not sure where they're coming from, although I do believe it's a software issue as I've had my hosting company take a look to no avail.
I have had some development work done recently and am running the W3 Total Cache plugin (my site is built on WP). I also run the Yoast SEO plugin and rely on it to publish an XML sitemap among other things.
Anyone have any idea where these 500 errors originate from?
Thanks,
John

Dan, thanks for taking the time to look into this, I've sent your answer along to my developer, I'll update the thread if we find something that could help out other readers.

Hi John
I've checked this out a few times today, and tossed it around with a few other Moz people.
When I crawled the site earlier today with Screaming Frog, I got all the 500 errors you describe on the "normal" pages.
Now when I crawl the site I only get the "weird" pages with the unusual URLs.
We don't think this has to do with either Yoast of W3 Total Cache causing any of it. As far as what caused 500's on the "normal" pages, its hard to tell now. They loaded fine in my browser when I checked earlier.
But I strongly suspect maybe something going wrong in .htaccess for those stranger URLs.
Not sure why those URLs exist like that in the first place - they should all be "clean" whenever possible with the question marks etc in them. That'd be the first place I'd get straightened out. Check permalink settings or maybe a theme setting? Or did someone do something custom to the .htaccess file?
Get your URLs operating correctly. Then if the 500s still exist, you know its a different matter but at least you've narrowed it down and correct the URLs.
Hope this helps!

520 Error from crawl report with Cloudflare
I am getting a lot of 520 Server Error in crawl reports. I see this is related to Cloudflare. We know 520 is Cloudflare so maybe the Moz team can change this from "unknown" to "Cloudflare 520". Perhaps the Moz team can update the "how to fix" section in the reporting, if they have some possible suggestions on how to avoid seeing these in the report of if there is a real issue that needs to be addressed. At this point I don't know. There must be a solution that Moz can provide like a setting in Cloudflare that will permit the Rogerbot if Cloudflare is blocking it because it does not like its behavior or something. It could be that Rogerbot is crawling my site on a bad day or at a time when we were deploying a massive site change. If I know when my site will be down can I pause Rogerbot? I found this https://developers.cloudflare.com/support/troubleshooting/general-troubleshooting/troubleshooting-crawl-errors/

What could cause Google to not honor canonical URLs?
I have a strange situation on a website, when I do a Google query of site:example.com all the top indexed results appear to be queries that users can perform on the website. So any random term the user searches for on the website for some reason is causing the search result page to get indexed - like example.com/search/query/random-keywords However, the search results page has a canonical tag on it that points to example.com/search, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything. Any thoughts or ideas why this could be happening?

Totally confused by titles being too long!
We use a wordpress site and have tried some SEO plug-ins in the past. In the analysis, I am getting more than 2,000 pages have titles that are too long and from the results it looks like it was a result of one of these past SEO plug-ins. Do I need to go through and change all those titles? How bad is it that so many of the old blog posts are too long? Some are too long only in the archive link... So confused and hating the idea of reworking thousands of posts! Thanks y'all!

That’s an error. The requested URL /search?q=cache%3A http%3A//www.bannerbuzz.com/custom-vinyl-banners.html was not found on this server. That’s all we know. My category page rank is 2 and its keyword is on first in google.com, so i am little bit worried about this page cache issue, Can someone please tell me why is this happening? Is this a temporary issue? Help me to solve out this cache issue and once again my page will regularly cache in future. Thanks

Leverage browser caching Nginx
Hi there, Does anyone have any experience with leverage browser caching on Nginx? Every time I run the pagespeed test from Google my site comes up with this as a high priority issue that needs to be addressed. I can see that it is mostly images that doesn't have an expiry date and tried putting the following into my conf file: location ~* .(jpg|jpeg|gif|css|png|js|ico)$ {
Technical SEO | | MPO
expires max;
} But this results in breaking my page off and all elements where out of place and missing images. Also tried excluding css and js but hen all images where still missing. My site is running on Drupal and I use APC for PHP to increase the load time on the site. Hope somebody might be able to help me out.0 -
Lots of overdynamic URL and crawl errors..
Just wanted some advice. SEOmoz crawl found out about 18,000 errors. The error URLs are all mainly URLs like the one below, which seem to be the registration URL with a re-direct on, going back the product after registration: http://www.DOMAIN.com/index.php?_g=co&_a=reg&redir=/index.php?_a=viewProd%26productId=3465 We have the following line in the robots file to stop the login page from being crawled: Disallow: /index.php?act=login If I add the following, will it stop the error? Disallow: /index.php?act=reg Thanks in advance**.**

URL with tracking code
Hi there, At the company i am currently working for we have a problem with shortcut url with tracking in it. They send a lot of brochures with a shortcut URL which redirects to the page of the event with tagging. For example The real URL is:
Technical SEO | | RuudHeijnen
http://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/ The URL in the brochure is:
www.sbo.nl/schoolleiderpo this then redirects to: h
ttp://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=shortcut&utm_campaign=schoolleiderpo Now we can measure the effect of the brochure on on-line traffic and conversion. This is great but a lot of website link to that shortcut url and if the event is put offline the links to it generate an 404. We have now about 800 backlinks that generate this 404 and i want to fix it. Another big problem "i think" is the possibility that google will index this url with tagging. Now i have 2 options: 1. look at al the url with that 404 and redirect them with a 301 to the best page 2. create the shortcut on an page that is most suitable but then i will get the tagging in the URL and i guess google will see this as dublicate content. It is possible that in the future the shortcut url will be used again. What would you suggest as the best sollution.0 -
