Xml Sitemap
-
Hi mozzers,
I am about to submit a sitemap for one of my clients via webmaster tools. The issue is that I have way too many urls that I don't want them to be indexed by Google such as testing pages, auto generated pages...
Is there way to remove certain URL from the XML sitemap or is this impossible?
If impossible, is the only way to control these urls is to "No index" all these pages that i don't want the search engine to see?
Thanks Mozzers,
-
That is correct, you just submit as you would normally. There are two ways to submit the file:
-
Via the webmaster tools interface. Have you created your webmaster tools account yet? Optimization -> Sitemaps -> Add Sitemap
-
By referencing it in your robots.txt. Just add the following on a new line: Sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Hi Greg,
Since I am not an expert into sitemaps yet, once i finish removing URLs I don t want, should I just save the text editor document and then how do I submit this doc into webmaster tool?
Is it just "add sitemap" and put the name of the doc "www.example.com/sitemap.xml"? or is there another manipulation I should be aware of?
Thank you,
-
Great question! You can manually remove all pages from the sitemap, by opening it up in a text editor of your choice, removing offending entries, and saving the file. Make sure you use a simple text editor like notepad on windows or textwrangler on mac.
It is best to do this before your submission, rather then add pages which you know you don't want indexed and then have to ask google to remove them.

You should absolutely be able to exercise complete control over what URLs are contained in your site map. It is dependent upon your sitemap software. There are hundreds of software solutions available.
Regardless of the site map, you should definitely no index the pages you do not wish to appear in search results. A robots.txt entry is definitely not the best solution.

Like you mentioned, you could either use robots.txt, or submit a URL removal request through webmaster tools. I've used both methods.

Sitemap use for very large forum-based community site
I work on a very large site with two main types of content, static landing pages for products, and a forum & blogs (user created) under each product. Site has maybe 500k - 1 million pages. We do not have a sitemap at this time.

Currently our SEO discoverability in general is good, Google is indexing new forum threads within 1-5 days roughly. Some of the "static" landing pages for our smaller, less visited products however do not have great SEO.
Question is, could our SEO be improved by creating a sitemap, and if so, how could it be implemented? I see a few ways to go about it: Sitemap includes "static" product category landing pages only - i.e., the product home pages, the forum landing pages, and blog list pages. This would probably end up being 100-200 URLs. Sitemap contains the above but is also dynamically updated with new threads & blog posts. Option 2 seems like it would mean the sitemap is unmanageably long (hundreds of thousands of forum URLs). Would a crawler even parse something that size? Or with Option 1, could it cause our organically ranked pages to change ranking due to Google re-prioritizing the pages within the sitemap?
Not a lot of information out there on this topic, appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.0 -
Adding your sitemap to robots.txt
Hi everyone, Best practice question: When adding your sitemap to your robots.txt file, do you add the whole sitemap at once or do you add different subcategories (products, posts, categories,..) separately? I'm very curious to hear your thoughts!

What are the steps to submitting a sitemap for a blog?
We are in the process of a website migration and need to submit a site map for our website and blog. What are the steps to follow for submitting a site map for the blog? Can we submit with just the /blog URL or do we need to include each category?

How do you handle Wordpress sitemaps within your site?
I have a regular site map on my site and I also have a Wordpress site installed within it that we use for blog/news content. I currently have an auto-sitemap generator installed in Wordpress which automatically updates the sitemap and submits it to the search engines each time the blog is updated. The question I have (which I think I know the answer to but I just want to confirm) is do I have to include all of the articles within the blog in the main site's sitemap despite the Wordpress sitemap having them in there already? If I do include the articles in the main website's sitemap, they would also be in the Wordpress sitemap as well, which is redundant. Redundancy is not good, so I just want to make sure.

How to Submit XML Site Map with more than 300 Subdomains?
Hi,
Technical SEO | | vaibhav45
I am creating sitemaps for site which has more than 500 Sub domains. Page varies from 20 to 500 in all subdomains & it will keep on adding in coming months. I have seen sites that create separate sitemap.xml for each subdomain which they mention in separate robots.txt file http://windows7.iyogi.com/robots.txt XML site map eg for subdomain: http://windows7.iyogi.com/sitemap.xml.gz , Currently in my website we have only 1 robots.txt file for main domain & sub domains. Please tell me shall i create separate robots.txt & XML site map file for each subdomain or 1 file. Creating separate xml for each sub-domain is not feasible as we have to verify in GWT separately. Is there any automatic way & do i have to ping separately if i add new pages in subdomain. Please advise me.0
