JoeAnt, HotVsNot - Post Penguin?
-
Just curious as to the Mozzers views on directories such as HotVsNot, JoeAnt post Googles Penguin update.
It seems to me that these kind of directories are exactly the kind of sites that Penguin is targeting? Yet, i can't find any evidence that links from these sites have been negatively effected.
Would appreciate your views on whether these are "safe" directories, just a matter of time before Google hits them, or that Google has already hit them

I'm listed in those two. They both have editorial staff. I think they are safe to use. Also listed in Yahoo Directory, BOTW, business.com, goguides. Have been trying to get listed in DMOZ, but my competitor is the editor
In addition to directories, look for general and niche reference sites/desks.

Maybe they were paying attention, spooky timing! http://www.seomoz.org/blog/web-directory-submission-danger

Interesting SEOmoz lists notable directories here http://www.seomoz.org/directories inc the ones you mention. You'd hope they'd be safe being right here on SEOmoz!
My opinion though is that directories mostly count for little though wont hurt you unless they make up 'too big' a portion of your links. The way Google is going and has been for some time - any link that is easy to get i.e. via directories, blogrolls etc are likely to not be worth much or anything and in excess will hurt not help you.

Blog post back link
Hi, I am new to SEO and I am planning to hire someone in Fiverr regularly to submit different guest posts on the different related topic on the website with a good domain authority (>60) as a result to have some quality inbound links. As I am writing the guest post myself, May I know how many backlinks should I have per post are best for SEO? and should I only focus on anchor text backlinks? Also, here is my understanding of what I should be careful when hiring someone on Fiverr to do a blog post, please let me know if I am wrong and if there is another thing I need to be careful. It needs to be dofollow link It is permanent I check the website domain authority and spam sore that the person provides before using it. Please let me know if I missed out something. Appreciated Kind regards Chris

Does More Guest Posts Effect Website Rankings in a Negative Way?
Hello Everyone, On an average I am getting around 20 backlinks for 15 days. All these backlinks are done through proper outreach and guest posts in relevant websites. We have a team of four people doing only outreach and getting backlinks through proper guest posts. But I am worried on whether it will effect my website ranking in a negative way? Kindly get me clarified with my doubt. Should I continue this or should I reduce my numbers?

Link profile problem? User-generated reviews website suffering after Penguin
Hi all, We run a user-generated reviews website and we link to the websites of businesses with reviews. Many of them also link back to their reviews page (and in fact, we give them a widget to encourage this). I have a couple of questions about this; Most of these links are to legitimate, but fairly small and unknown businesses - which means a lot of our inbound (and outbound) links are low quality. Could this be hurting us? Given that the links are 2-way, could this be viewed as spam? Some businesses (including a couple with high traffic) have included our widget in their website footer - so there are thousands of (low quality) links from a single domain. Problem? The reason I'm asking is that our traffic suffered in the Panda update, and is again suffering with Penguin - despite the fact that we have a lot of unique content in the form of user-reviews. We've never engaged in any black-hat techniques. Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated. SEO novice here!

Penguin issue or wrong linkbuilding strategy?
Quite a few month ago before Google implemented Penguin algorithm I had a great situation. After 24th of April my ranking and traffic dropped instantly. Here a a screenshot from my GA: http://imageshack.us/a/img15/4717/screenshot20121013at120.png I have reviewed my linkbuilding strategy and on-page optimisation however some keywords which dropped out of page 5 don't want to come back even close to page 1. I would appreciate a professional advise on how my strategy, on-page optimisation can be improved. For those who are interested here is my domain: http://www.desertsafariabudhabi.ae The keyword which is more interesting for me is "desert safari abu dhabi". Thanks in advance, Russel

Is it safe to do a lot of links to a new post on an old domain?
Hi, I was wondering as far as being aggressive in link building can you add a lot of links to a new post on an aged domain? How many would you say is too much for the new pages if the over all domain has about 40k links? I am just wondering of a safe round about number monthly that can be done although I do realize this is site specific. I would trust your best guess. Thanks, ~JImmy

The Risks of Unrelated Guest Posts
Hi Mozzers! I'm really interested to get some opinions on whether a guest post on a blog that is far outside your niche could be a risky tactic. For example if your blog is about a technology product and you get a guest post published on an Elvis blog, will this appear manipulative or similar to a purchased link? Suppose your guest post is about Elvis, but at the end of the article is a link to a technology product with the anchor text "customized PC adapters". Won't that look manipulative to a search engine algorithm?
