Tool based websites after Panda and Penguin
-
I have several sites that I classify as "tool" based sites. These type of sites includes anagram solvers for word games, ip address lookups and other various based tools. I like to specialize in these kind of sites because frankly I am not a blogger and hate to write.
Before Panda I was doing fairly well, I had many users coming to my sites everyday. The Panda update "tips" that I read all over including on google sites seems to always refer to articles and how to deal with those. The only problem is that I am not an article based site. Yes I have content that describes my tools, but we are talking 1 to at most 2 paragraphs per page. I know Panda effected my ratings because I lost ranking with some big keywords. Since then I have been able to gain some ground, but I am having a hard time trying to figure out what exactly google wants from a site like me. The main path I am getting from Panda is concentrating on the users, and what will make their experience better. I focus on that whenever I make a change. I figure the easier I make it for them, the happier they are going to be.
I am wondering what you guys think about some things I can look into creating or focusing on to enhance my site. I use social media heavily (FB, tweets, posterous, blog, RSS Feed) already, but is there something else I can look at that might help me that I am not seeing. I seem to be running out of ideas.
- Maybe add more content to my pages?
- Check link structure (its pretty basic as it is)
- add more article based blog posts?
Just want some ideas, I will send my URL to anyone who wants to take a look and see what I may be missing.

EGOL's "Free Beer" post is awesome. I think what I am suffering from is just the other sites are more authoritative than me. That's an awesome recommendation
What kind of title you think I should go with?

Cesar :
I looked at your Scrabble Dictionary site. (Nice).
I probably wouldn't blog but would spend time trying to involve the user with the site and try to build loyalty or continue to build authentic socials. (On other info search sites, forums seem to do pretty well and moderating the UGC to exclude spam is far easier than sustaing a blog.)
The scrabble game is buried in a secondary page and takes a LONG time to load. (The ads for "Buy A Link" which appear to delay the game loading up in Java do not help.)
I'd consider moving the game to the home page or at least makiing it more prominent as a choice on the home page. Then, I'd consider awarding some sort of prize (a Scrabble game?) to whoever scores the highest on site that month. If you can restrict the prize to those in your FB community, you'd limit the CPU drain and gain community in FB. (Sort of a take off on EGOL's "Free Beer").
Just my .02 drachma/euro.... We'll see what far more experienced people suggest.

Rankings Drop Penguin 2.0
Hey guys, Suffering a horrible rankings drop after penguin 2.0. We have 4 popular sites and have seen a steady decline in rankings and traffic after 22nd May. I've looked into it a little bit and am wondering if WordPress blog sidebar links might be hurting us. Specifically my brother and I both have sidebar links on our personal blogs which are getting indexed on every page, and I'm wondering if it's distorting our link profiles. Specifically, I read something about links coming from sites which aren't relevant to your niche and overly optimised anchor text. Both sites have very simple single keyword anchor texts on the links. We're pretty white hat in terms of SEO, we've never done that much link building, and when we do, it's usually with worthwhile directories or with sites we have relationships with. Therefore we don't have that many links. Any ideas on how best to investigate this? Thanks.

O.S.E. vs Webmaster Tools
Webmaster tools is telling me I have a bunch of websites pointing to my website, and I have been adding links as of the last 3 weeks which WM Tools is already seeing. Open Site Explorer isn't really showing any of them? My site has gone from bottom of page 5 to page 2 in just 3 weeks so I'm happy about that but can anyone explain this to me?

Need assistance with website placement
Hi, If a website xyz.com is placed under the top right navigation of a blog abc.com which are closely relevant to each other, will it do any harm to the website in Google search?
Link Building | | promodirect
Now since the website is placed under right navigation, it is visible on every page of the blog, does it matter even though they are closely relevant? Note: The other external links that are on the blog are also relevant to each other. Thank You,

I am just a beginner in SEO. But has any of the changes recently implemented by google affected out bound links? Meaning if a website now has a good number of outbound links to strong websites and pages could that Translate to better rankings?

Following Penguin, what is the best practice for a web design agency placing a footer link in client sites?
For years we have included a 'Web Design by ...' link in the footer of all client websites designed by us. However, following the Penguin update, it seems that this legitimate practice could now be penalised. Should we be removing those links from our client's sites? There are tens of thousands, all with similar or identical text! For future client sites, should we avoid these footer links altogether? Or maybe limit the link to a single page on each site?

How do paid directories like thomasnet.com do so well in the serps? Aren't the Panda updates supposed to be moving us away from this?
With all of the updates/changes to Google's algo, I assumed that paid listings & links like those on thomasnet.com would have less merit. Is this an incorrect assumption?
