Domain Age. What's a good age?
-
I have a new site that ranks very well and is rich with content. I know that it would rank better but since it's new I'm assuming that it is being held back. My question is how long does it take for a site to mature?

Thanks Keri

Open Site Explorer isn't a live crawl, and the data there can be a little old. There is an update scheduled for tomorrow, so I'd wait a day and check for your links tomorrow -- the data will be a lot fresher then, but still a few weeks old.

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. I used the Open Site Explorer tool here but for some reason I don't see the links that are pointing to my site. Google Webmasters shows i have over 1000 links which are all natural links and another tool shows that I have over 750 links.
What would you change about the site?
How would you rebuild the site?
It is a work in progress so your advice helps.
Thanks again.

Hi Joel,
Just took a look at your website. I'll give you some quick points.
Bluntly, your website needs work. It needs to be completely re-built.
If you want to to build up authority for your site, you need to do so through link building. If you want to get natural links as opposed to paying for links or submitting to low quality directories, you need link-worthy content. That takes me back to my first point about a new website.
SEO Moz's Open Site Explorer is a great tool where you can take a look at the websites that are ranking well for your top keywords, and you can see where those sites are getting their links from.

Now I see sites above me that have domain age on their side but they don't have as many links. I have a lot of links that are organic. I also have a more robust site full of unique content that my competitors don't have. So in this case what steps should I take? Thank you for your advice.

So what is the best strategy for competing against other sites who have domain age and authority. I am a Realtor and my site is up against some large national sites. I am targeting local keywords with local info. Thanks for your advice.

I think this is one of those things that SEOs hear a little bit about, then stress out about. Although high rankings & an older domain may be highly correlated, that does not mean that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between ranking & age of domain. It's simply natural that the longer a domain is around (and the longer an actual website resides on that domain) that website/domain has more opportunity to build up its domain authority and their rankings.
-
I've found a few different topics about this and it seems to be the consensus that domain age does(n't) matter... people don't seem to really have a definite answer. There is a study that shows that a large percentage (over 50%) of #1 search results are domains over 10 years old, but younger than 10 years seemed to be pretty even. The target keywords would also play a factor.. if the keyword you're going for has been around for a long time, the older domains that are ranking for that keyword will be much harder to topple with a young domain.
Another side note is just the number of links a site can accumulate over 10 years over a very young domain.

Over-optimizing Internal Linking: Is this real and, if so, what's the happy medium?
I have heard a lot about having a solid internal linking structure so that Google can easily discover pages and understand your page hierarchies and correlations and equity can be passed. Often, it's mentioned that it's good to have optimized anchor text, but not too optimized. You hear a lot of warnings about how over-optimization can be perceived as spammy: https://neilpatel.com/blog/avoid-over-optimizing/ But you also see posts and news like this saying that the internal link over-optimization warnings are unfounded or outdated:

https://www.seroundtable.com/google-no-internal-linking-overoptimization-penalty-27092.html So what's the tea? Is internal linking overoptimization a myth? If it's true, what's the tipping point? Does it have to be super invasive and keyword stuffy to negatively impact rankings? Or does simple light optimization of internal links on every page trigger this?1 -
Can't support IE 7,8,9, 10\. Can we redirect them to another page that's optimized for those browsers so that we can have our site work on modern browers while still providing a destination of IE browsers?
Hi, Our site can't support IE 7,8,9, 10. Can we redirect them to another page that's optimized for those browsers so that we can have our site work on modern broswers while still providing a destination of IE browsers? Would their be an SEO penalty? Thanks!

ECommerce Replatforming URL's
We are in the process of re-platforming our eCommerce site to Magento 2. For the most part, the majority of site content will remain the same. Unfortunately on our current platform, we have been inconsistent with the use of .html as a URL suffix. As a result, our category and product pages are half and half - /stainless-steel-hardware.html

&
/stainless-steel-hardware We are considering taking the opportunity to clean up and standardize our URLs. (Drop the .html from all URLs on the new site and 301 redirect these to the same URL without the .html) Our concern is that many of the .html pages are good categories with strong page rank and I've read many articles about page rank loss from 301 redirects. We are debating internally if it really makes sense to take an SEO hit for something is seemingly small as dropping the .html from the URL. It would be a no-brainer if we were taking the opportunity to change to more SEO friendly natural language URLs. However currently our URL's appear acceptable with the exception of the inconsistent suffix. Thanks in advance for any insight on how you would approach this!2 -
Keyword research when the site's subject is low volume
Hey guys, what do you do when you planning a new website and doing keyword research for a site when the avg. search volumes are relatively low. We set up run contact centres for UK charities including voice, webchat, sms, email and response fulfillment etc. It seems that people aren't really searching that often for this 'sexy subject'. Average volumes for searches with some intent/qualifier range from between 10-100 monthly searches. What sort of strategies would you adopt in this scenario? Do you optimise for what you can and then make a large focus on other digital marketing tactics such as content marketing, social media, email marketing etc. Thanks for your time guys Leo

What is happening with this page's rankings? (G Analytics screenprint attached) help me.
Hi, At the moment im confused. I have a page which shows up for the query 'bank holidays' first page solid for 2 years - this also applies to the terms 'mothers day', 'pancake day' and a few others (UK Google). And there still ranking. Here is the problem: Usually I would rank for 'bank holidays 2014' (the terms with the year in are the real traffic drivers) and would be position 3/5. Over the last 3 months this has decayed dropping position to 30+. From the screenprint you can see the term 'Bank Holidays' is holding on but the term 'bank holidays 2014' is slowly decaying. If you query 'bank holidays 2015' we don't appear in rankings at all. What is causing this? The content is ok, social sharing happens and the odd link is picked up hear and there. I need help, how do I start pushing this back in the other direction, its like the site is slowly dying. And what really kills me, is 2 pages are ranking on page1 off link farms. How do I prevent 404's from hurting my site?
I manage a real estate broker's site on which the individual MLS listing pages continually create 404 pages as properties are sold. So, on a site with 2200 pages indexed, roughly half are 404s at any given time. What can I do to mitigate any potential harm from this?

Ecommerce URL's
I'm a bit divided about the URL structure for ecommerce sites. I'm using Magento and I have Canonical URLs plugin installed. My question is about the URL structure and length. 1st Way: If I set up Product to have categories in the URL it will appear like this mysite.com/category/subcategory/product/ - and while the product can be in multiple places , the Canonical URL can be either short or long. The advantage of having this URL is that it shows all the categories in the breadcrumbs ( and a whole lot more links over the site ) . The disadvantage is the URL Length 2nd Way: Setting up the product to have no category in the URL URL will be mysite.com/product/ Advantage: short URL. disadvantage - doesn't show the categories in the breadcrumbs if you link direct. Thoughts?

What's better ...more or less linking C-blocks?
I'm a little confused about c-blocks, I've been reading about them but I still don't get it. Are these similar to sitewide links? do they have to come from websites that I own and hosted in the same ip? and finally, what's better ...more or less linking c-blocks? Cheers 🙂
