Image Sitemap Indexing Issue
-
Hello Folks,
I've been running into some strange issues with our XML Sitemaps.
- The XML Sitemaps won't open on a browser and it throws the following error instead of opening the XML Sitemap. Sample XML Sitemap - www.veer.com/sitemap/images/Sitemap0.xml.gzError - "XML Parsing Error: no element foundLocation: http://www.veer.com/sitemap/images/Sitemap0.xmlLine Number 1, Column 1:"2) Image files are not getting indexed. For instance, the sitemap - www.veer.com/sitemap/images/Sitemap0.xml.gz has 6,000 URLs and 6,000 Images. However, only 3,481 URLs and 25 images are getting indexed. The sitemap formatting seems good, but I can't figure out why Google's de-indexing the images and only 50-60% of the URLs are getting indexed. Thank you for your help!

Hi Cyrus,
Thank you for your note and my apologies for delay in response.
The indexation number is from Google Webmaster Tools.
The two are identical and I've tested other XML sitemap files that are in GZ format that opened fine in the browser without unzipping them or prompting a DL. The sitemaps were uploaded to GWT as the .gz files only since we have many pages to upload.
I'll check with our Dev Team regarding the XML parsing error.
Please let me know what other areas we need to look into based my answers to your questions. Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it!

Some possible suggestions:
- Make sure every image has a width and height attribute defined in the HTML. Images are much more likely to be indexed this way.
- Same with the "alt" attribute
- Make sure your image subdirectory isn't blocked (robots.txt for example)
- Same with the pages
It may be Google actually is indexing those images, but not reporting them in GWT. Do an image search and narrow results to your site, to see if your images actually appear.
Aside from accessibility issues, make sure the images are on well-linked to pages. It's much more likely for an image to be indexed on a page with good link metrics and a lack of crawl problems.

@Cyrus
You have given very good explanation. But, I have similar issue for image sitemap. If we are talking about crawling & indexing ratio so, it's quite good. You can know more by attachment.
You can check syntax of image sitemap by following XML.

Can you give me input ::: How can I improve crawling and indexing for images?

Hi Corbis,
Man, you've got some tough questions! i may have to call in some outside support on this one if we can't figure it out.
First of all, are you getting the indexation #s from Google Webmaster Tools? What I mean by this - is Google saying there are 6000 URLs in your sitemap, but they are only indexing 3,481?
When I unzipped the compressed sitemap file, it opened fine in my browser, while the 2nd uncompressed file did not. Are they identical? And have you submitted both to Google?
There could be many reasons why you're getting the XML parsing error. One issue might be in the second line, referencing http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1/ as a Schema location, because this is an html webpage and not an XML or DTD file. You might try removing the reference to this URL, and see if that helps.
Otherwise, if Google is reporting the correct number of URLs and Images, then you know they are aware of those URLs, and the problem may not be with the sitemap. Google doesn't necessarily index all URLs in a sitemap, but instead bases it's indexing on factors like your domain authority, link structure and crawl allowance. Addressing these issues will usually help get more pages indexed than a sitemap alone.
So if you can improve internal crawl errors, duplicate content issues, and make sure there is a good navigational architecture to your site, you should see a good rise in indexations.

Alternatives 301? Issues redirection of index.html page with Adobe Business Catalyst
Hi Moz community, As for now we have two different versions of a client's homepage that’s dividing our traffic. One of the urls is the index.html version of the other url. We are using Adobe Business Catalyst for one of our clients and they told us they can’t 301 redirect. Adobe Business Catalyst does 301 redirects, but not to itself like an .htaccess rewrite. Doing a 301 redirect using BC from index.html to / creates an infinite loop and break the page. Are there alternatives to a 301 or any suggestions how to solve this? Thanks for all your answers and thoughts in advance,

Sitemap indexation
3 days ago I sent in a new sitemap for a new platform. Its 23.412 pages but until now its only 4 pages (!!) that are indexed according to the Webmaster Tools. Why so few? Our stage-enviroment got indexed (more than 50K pages) in a few days by a mistake.

Removing indexed website
I had a .in TLD version of my .com website floated for about 15 days, which was a duplicate copy of .com website. I did not wish to use the .in further for SEO duplication reasons and had let the .in domain expire on 26th April. But still now when I search from my website the .in version also shows up in results and even in google webmaster it shows the the website with maximum (190) number of links to my .com website. I am sure this is hurting the ranking of my .com website. How can the .in website be removed from googles indexing and search results. Given that is has expired also. thanks

Host sitemaps on S3?
Hey guys, I run a dynamic web service and I will start building static sitemaps for it pretty soon. The fact that my app lives in a multitude of servers doesn't make it easy to distribute frequently updated static files throughout the servers. My idea was to host the files in AWS S3 and point my robots.txt sitemap directive there. I'll use a sitemap index so, every other sitemap will be hosted on S3 as well. I could dynamically mirror the content from the files in S3 through my app, but that would be a little more resource intensive than just serving the static files from a common place. Any ideas? Thanks!

Index page
To the SEO experts, this may well seem a silly question, so I apologies in advance as I try not to ask questions that I probably know the answer for already, but clarity is my goal I have numerous sites ,as standard practice, through the .htaccess I will always set up non www to www, and redirect the index page to www.mysite.com. All straight forward, have never questioned this practice, always been advised its the ebst practice to avoid duplicate content. Now, today, I was looking at a CMS service for a customer for their website, the website is already built and its a static website, so the CMS integration was going to mean a full rewrite of the website. Speaking to a friend on another forum, he told me about a service called simple CMS, had a look, looks perfect for the customer ... Went to set it up on the clients site and here is the problem. For the CMS software to work, it MUST access the index page, because my index page is redirected to www.mysite.com , it wont work as it cant find the index page (obviously) I questioned this with the software company, they inform me that it must access the index page, I have explained that it wont be able to and why (cause I have my index page redirected to avoid duplicate content) To my astonishment, the person there told me that duplicate content is a huge no no with Google (that's not the astonishing part) but its not relevant to the index and non index page of a website. This goes against everything I thought I knew ... The person also reassured me that they have worked within the SEO area for 10 years. As I am a subscriber to SEO MOZ and no one here has anything to gain but offering advice, is this true ? Will it not be an issue for duplicate content to show both a index page and non index page ?, will search engines not view this as duplicate content ? Or is this SEO expert talking bull, which I suspect, but cannot be sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it would make my life a lot easier for the customer to use this CMS software, but I would do it at the risk of tarnishing the work they and I have done on their ranking status Many thanks in advance John
