How long until changes are reflected in Google
-
I updated my site to remove duplicate titles and also include the rel=
"next" etc tags. When can I expect to see these reflected in Google andSEOMoz?
I also found out I should update my sitemap every month, when will Google pick up the new sitemap?
Sorry if these are basic questions, new to the whole world of SEO.
Thanks
M

A sitemap index is used to manage multiple sitemap files. For example, a sitemap file should have a maximum of 50k URLs. If you need to index a site with 240k URLs, it would require at least 5 sitemap files and one sitemap index.

Thanks Ryan - my question probably wasn't clear.
When I was lookin on Google I found reference to a sitemap and a sitemap index - is it necessary to have both? what is the advantage of also have a sitemap index?
Thanks

There are a few advantages of having a sitemap:
-
if your site has any issues with navigation or crawlability, then a sitemap offers another way for search engines to discover your pages
-
you can ping search engines immediately after adding a page to your site to let them know your sitemap has been updated. Search engines may find new content faster.

What is the point in a Sitemap Index file?
Should I ahve one of them on my site?
Thanks

Hi Martin,
Both Google and SEOmoz crawl the web based on the importance of web pages. That importance is determined primarily be links. If you were to make a change on the New York Times home page, that change would be crawled by Google in minutes. If you have your own quiet website, it may take a month for Google to notice any change to a page other then your home page.
Try this: perform a search in Google which shows your site as a result. If necessary, search for your home page. Next, hover your mouse to the right-side of your result. A couple grey arrows should appear. If you hover over those arrows, you will notice a cached copy of your web page will appear to the right. Above the page you will see the word "cached". Click it. At the top of the page it will show the date / time the cached page was created. This will offer you some idea of the last time Google crawled that page.
I also found out I should update my sitemap every month, when will Google pick up the new sitemap?
Ideally your sitemap should be updated any time a change is made to your site. If you add a page, modify a page, etc. the sitemap can inform search engines about the change. It is also ideal for you to have sitemap software which pings google any time your sitemap changes. This process can be automated easily. Otherwise, I would recommend keeping the sitemap at your root such as mysite.com/sitemap.xml and using your robots.txt file to indicate the location of your sitemap and checking your WMT panel to ensure Google is seeing it.

Email traffic tracking in Google Analytics
Hello! I have a question about how to assure email traffic is properly tracked in GA > Acquisition > All Traffic > Channels. **First, some background... ** Our company (Wisconsin's largest group dental practice) is about to revamp the way we try to re-capture patients who don't have a future appointment set with us. Part of that process will include emails. Those emails will point back to our website to request an appointment. Now to the question... Is there anything special we should do to assure that links coming to the website and the resulting appointment request goal conversions track appropriately and appear under "Email" in the Default Channel Group of Analytics > Acquisition > All Traffic > Channels area of GA? For example, should we use Campaign URL Builder to establish UTM links? Thanks in advance for any feedback. Erik

Is it possible to import data from an old Google Analytics profile to a new Google Analytics profile?
We have encountered a situation where a client's old SEO firm is refusing to grant us Admin access to our client's existing GA account. For security purposes (so the other SEO firm doesn't delete the existing GA profile) we have started a new Google Analytics profile. Again we do have access to the data in the old account. Is it possible to migrate this old data over (if we just have user access)? Thanks for the help

Google Analytics
Is there any way around being able to set up 20 goals in Analytics? What if one of my clients want to set up 10 pages with separate actions to track on each page. Will then each actions count as a separate goal? If this is the case, how could I work around creating more than 20 goals? Would I have to look into hiring/buying a third party or separate software? Your help is greatly appreciated.

How to not track mobile redirects in Google Analytics
If a user is on a mobile device and comes to our home page, http://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/Home/ they are redirected to http://m.darden.virginia.edu/web/Home/. We want a way to remove all the redirects from our Google analytics reports. More specifically we do not want to include the the page view of http://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/Home/ in our page view count when the user is on a mobile device. How do we do that?

Google analytics and software applications
Hei Guys. I think i know the answer for this one but i thought i ask you in order to be 100% sure. Ok let's go.. So i set up url based goals in Google analytics. My website (what are running on WordPress) has google analytics enabled but just before customers makes desired action i have to send them to the application page. Trick is that the application page is not running on wordpress and doesn't have google analytic tracking. After customer fills the application form i send him to my /thank-you page on my wordpress site. My question is: Does the conversion still count because customer left my website for a minute in order to fill in the application form? Best Regards, Tauri
