How to Start a Social Networking Site
-
I am thinking about starting a niche social networking site. My question is how big of a team would I need, how much up front costs would I incur and what specific coding languages would my team need to be well versed in? I'm thinking HTML, CSS, php, MySQL but are there any other languages needed for this type of endeavor ?

Sounds EPIC! but in my opinion you at least have to share your niche and goals to answer your goals... because:
- There are pre made codes for social networking sites already available... are you going to go with that and alter as per your requirements...
- What special feature are you going to make public..
- Will it be mobile friendly?
these are few questions.. and on basis of that one will be able to answer about the total players in the team what should be their skill set and all!

Thank you for your response. I agree but I've already answered those types of questions and researched the competition. Now I'm onto phase two and getting ready for implementation phase.

Joel, I am answering this question but to be honest this is a BIG question (I mean it) and I might miss so many points because starting a social media site is not as simple as any other business site (off-course if you need this to be successful.)
I think the question you put on the board are the secondary questions, I think the following should be your primary questions:
- What you social media website is going to do that anyone else is not doing at the moment? In short USPs?
- What niche/audience are you going to target?
- How you are planning your Return on Investment?
- What would be your promotional plan?
- How much are you ready to invest on your marketing and what kind of ROI are you going to expect from that?
- Who are your competitors?
- What you competitors are doing in the market? How successful they are?
I am missing question I know but these questions should come before you should ask for how many staff member you should have what code languages they should know and others…
Above mentioned questions are important because I have seen many social networking websites that go fail because they didn’t plan effectively. I would prefer to solid plan the stuff and then move on the implementation part accordingly.
Best of luck!

Links to Social Media accounts, rel=nofollow/follow and rel=me
Hi guys, I just saw this rel="me" attribute and I can't find any reputable recent (within last year) information. I never heard of this and wonder if it's any beneficial in any way. At the same time, should I use nofollow or follow on links from website to social accounts? I've heard different opinions but, again, no recent relevant and trustworthy information. Please, kick me into right direction. However, when kicking, please give me some proof, rather than thoughts 🙂 Thanks!

Main Site Social Media SEO impact on different product specific site
Hi, Few months ago I have created a minisite for a particular product category for the online store Giftcampaign.es with a different domain name. The idea was to focus this minisite on selling personalized usb memories and to have a different design, functionality and content that the main one (the site is http://www.usbpersonalizado.es). What I have done here is to link on my site the Social Markers of Facebook and LinkedIn of the parent site GiftCampaign.es, as we are not planning to open and maintain an account for those social networks, and we are already maintaining the ones for the parent site. I would like to know if the SEO Positioning of my minisite can benefit from the links of the Social Networks of the parent site or whether it makes not really an impact in SEO positioning unless I create and maintain new social network accounts for the different minisites that I create with different domain names. I look forward for your response. Best regards, Oriol .

Social signals: are they weighted differently?
I know social signals affect your site's ranking: but does it make a difference whether these come direct from your website (eg, people click on the Facebook button on a page, which is then posted to their own profile - ie, they create their own post) or whether people are share/like a post you have created on your Facebook account which contains a link to your website. Are they seen as equally as useful/important?

Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
I noticed that SEOMoz does not make use of Wistia's social sharing buttons such as a Facebook Like button. Is there any disadvantage to using the like button via Wistia rather than copy/pasting it in static HTML?

Outsourcing social media optimization
Is it a good idea to outsource social media optimization or is it something that has to be done in-house? I understand the question is kind of vague, but what I had in mind was to have an offshore contractor post daily about individual products and try to increase our following on twitter/facebook (i.e "social footprint").
