How to sell linkbuilding?
-
Howdy SEOmoz,
I was wondering what your approach is in selling linkbuilding to clients (we're an agency).
- Do you sell it as "linkbuilding" or more like content creation/content marketing?
- do you bill by the hours, instead of project based?
- How would you calculate the number of hours required? (I know "it depends" :-), but still some insights would be cool)
- Do you start immediately with more creative strategies (widgets, infographics)?
I'm really looking forward in learning how you guys tackle this.
Best regards,
Nik

Have you ever known anyone to do linkbuilding (or SEO for that matter) on a revenue share/commission basis. I have not heard of this being done but it seem that a good Link Builder would not be afraid of having more upside rather than a fixed amount of money with no skin in the game.
The one downside to this is how is this measured. Does the client decided? Does the client show the books and averages the last years revenue and anything over that average is share profit at say 80/20 .
My focus is strictly e-commerce sites.

Hi Nik,
We work on a very holistic approach where we seek to deeply understand the client in their current situation and what they want to get out of working with us (which is (usually)... more revenue!)
So, you want to sell a benefit, not a tactic.
Link building is a tactic (that "anyone" can do), you want to sell "increased revenue", and how will you do that? With link building
See the difference? It's small but makes a big difference.
Remember, people don't really want to buy a drill, they want to buy a whole in their wall, but the drill is what does it.
Many people will measure links built, or rankings, or whatever else -- and those things are great -- but at the end of the day, all of that stuff boils down to a simple question : Did we make more money because of the work you did, yes or no? If no, they probably won't want to work with you much longer, no matter how many great links you've built.
It's the dilemma of connecting the business side to the technical side.
When doing a proposal, we look at the competition and see how far behind our client is. Then we do some estimates as to what we would need to do to out rank them and come up with a total amount of work.
At that point we can gauge it to the clients budget.
For example, if we think it's going to be 6 months at $4K per month, and they can only do $2K per month, then we would do "half" the work we planned on per month, and stretch the timeline out to 12 months.
Same amount of work, but the client controls the timeline based on the budget.
There is a limit however, if the client wanted to spend all $24K in the first month, we wouldn't be able to complete everything and get the rankings so you have to space it out realistically.
Remember to build into your costs some of the "meta" work like reporting, calls, link outreach, getting content created etc.
Hope some of that helps.

Dodgy linkbuilding tactic?
Hello I'm hoping someone can help...does the below link building tactic sound a bit suspect... An editorial link (articles are subject to review) on a relevant, good authority site, however, it's free to submit an article and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of engagement/comments. Here's the site in question if that helps! http://www.health-host.co.uk/ Thanks for any help you can offer. Alice

What is the Best Way to Select a Company for Linkbuilding?
We need a few more links, who doesn't, and I've been looking at outsourcing it. Having checked out Moz posts to get an idea of best practice it seems that most link builders that responded to my Elance advert would give me links that would get me penalised either now or in the next update or two by Google. Leaving aside the frequent mentions of link wheels on potential SEOs sites, the main problem seems to be that I cannot believe that any content generated will be of any value to anyone other than as a pseudo contextual basis for the link "Bats are a flying mammal. They use sound waves to navigate. Sound is used in hearing aids. blah blah. blah." So how do you find decent link builders? How do you validate them? What are the key questions to ask? What are the red flags?

Linkbuilding in Latin America
I've started a magazine in Latin America about creative ways of making money, working from home, learning technical skills from home. We are not that spammy like other "make money" magazines, but of course we want to sell information products in the future. So far we are 3 people. I already have years of SEO experience but I built blog networks of expired domains and ranked for specific keywords. In this case I need more Brand backlinks and get Domain Authority. Unfortunately we failed pretty hard so far. What we tried: 1.) We searched for 2 infographic linkbaits that were very successful in the US, redesigned them, used similar content and reached out to around 60 websites. We offered them that we write a guest post made for their website from a professional journalist and embedding our infographic. From the 60 websites and no deal. The graphics costed us around 400$ to create. 2.) We tried to interview people (in the hope that they will link back to us from their website after the interview). Unfortunately from around 120 e-mails only two responded - only one linked back to us. We contacted them through the contact forms of their websites. 3.) We offered money for a blog post. After 2 hours of reaching out, we got 6 backlinks for an average of 40$ per link + time. Is the whole blogging culture only existing in Anglistic countries? It seems to me that people only link out to big brands (who started offline) or they charge money. The websites that rank for terms like "make money" (ganar dinero) have only paid- and spam backlinks. A few exceptions by people who had contacts to journalists of big magazines. What's my strategy?

Help with blog for linkbuilding location.
I work for a company that has www.widget.com. This is the site we do all our business under. Right now there is no linkbuilding so I would like to create a blog to start linkbuilding. We also own www.widget.info. Can I run the blog under .info and still get the credit on the .com or are they considered completely separate entities that have nothing to do with one another? The reason I would prefer it on the .info is it gives me complete control. By putting it on out .com I have to talk to the developers to install wordpress and mysql, when I would much rather just be able to do it on my own. Any ideas?

Linkbuilding help discussion
I've seen a couple of questions about outsourcing linkbuilding. The general tone is that it is a very dangerous practice to select any service or to hire someone without a very thorough vetting of their past projects. This makes sense to me. But my businesses don't have the resources to hire an employee or an established seo firm. I am developing a sound linkbuilding practice from what I learn here at seomoz. The trouble is I just don't have the time to do it to the scale necessary. I can afford to hire an assistant/contractor for $15/hr or less. Would it be a good idea to hire someone from elance or odesk and work very closely with them to make sure they build quality links? Do you think this is better than hiring someone who says they can get me to google #1 for a specific keyword for $100 or so? Does seomoz or anyone else have any recommendations on where to go to find quality help? Thanks
