High Rankings, Search Volumes & Low CTR
-
I'm hitting a roadblock: I've successfully optimized our company website for 5 keyphrases, 3 of which we're ranking #1 in Google.com for, and for which monthly search volumes in the US are > 10,000. Yet, our CTR for those searches is below 1%!!!
In plain words: people are looking for our industry, find us on as the first result, yet don't click on us! It's the first time I've experienced this in SEO and I'm wondering what is going on - and if anyone has suggestions.
Any help is appreciated...

Hi Florent,
For me if Webmaster tools shows me 1600 impressions and I'm on the first page, that means 1600 people searched for the term, I consider that search volume, this doesn't apply to search results where I'm not on he first page.
A 2.5 position can be real even if you are no1 for 6 weeks. The reason being is personalized results, you can be no1 on your results and be no 3,4 on other people results.
Are you sure that 15.000 searches are 'exact match' searches?
-
Hi Cornel,
The Google Webmaster tool indeed looks more accurate - but it doesn't give me an average search volume on Google, moreover it only provides with the impressions of our website for relevant key searches.
Furthermore, the Avg position on there doesn't seem accurate, as it displays 2.5 for one of our keyphrases, even though we've consistently been ranking #1 for the past 6 weeks.
What I don't understand is why the Google adwords tool would give an average search volume of 15,000 in the US for keyword X when the webmaster tool gives me an impression rate of 360 for the same keyword. The two should correlate, shouldn't they?
-
My volume estimates are from the Google Adwords tool - so I guess they could be broad? My rankings aren't personalized, in fact I've done them through the incognito window in Chrome on google.com and even tried through a proxy in the US (we're based in Canada) - still we rank #1 for 3 major keyphrases. I guess it could be that our page title needs work but I'm worried that if I change it might impact our ranking position...

Hi Ryan,
-
Yes, agreed
-
It might be that but still it's odd that out of a few thousand searches we only get about a few dozen clicks as #1...
Will dig in further

What is your website visitor counter like per month? Same as the source you are getting this info from ?
Look at the site above you (adowrds )and below you, if you were looking for your services/products, who would you click on, honestly ?
Probably just an off CTR counter, wherever you are getting the info from.

Hi Florent,
To calculate your CTR you shouldn't compare Google estimates with you traffic.
Google Webmaster tools gives you an exact CTR number
Take a look at this http://i.imgur.com/wWZzr.png

Not knowing your experience level... my guesses are.....
Your search volume estimates are broad match and your rankings are personalized.
If those are both false then this is a very unusual case.
-
That's pretty weird...
-
Perhaps googles estimates for traffic are incorrect and overstated.
-
Maybe your title and meta description needs some work so that searchers are more enticed to click to your site.

Drop in Mobile & Tablet Rankings
We have pretty strong rankings and have done since we launched our business in 2004. Over the past two months, we have seen a strong growth in rankings after a bit of a drip last year, however over the past week we have seen a significant drop off in organic traffic. Further analysis has shown that this is coming from mobile/tablet traffic, as the desktop traffic has been fairly consistent. There does appear to be a drop (across all main keywords) on mobile/tablet, but again there is no noticeable drop in desktop rankings. I am obviously aware Google treats these differently, but we can find no obvious reasons why this might have occurred. It is almost as if some sort of penalty has been applied on mobile/tablet only. There are no warnings or obvious problems in webmaster tools and our mobile/tablet site is mobile optimised. At a bit of a loss and would appreciate a bit of guidance in where you think we should start to understand what is causing this and how we should go about correcting it. Thanks in advance for the help.

How get an image on a third party site rank high on goode images?
Hello, I have sometimes articles written about my product online, is there anything else I can do except make a good file name for it, perhaps I can ask the site owner to modify in the article to make it rank higher? Also on some small websites I can see that images rank very high for the specific search term that is difficult to rank for in images, if I were to contact the site with a sponsored post request, what I should make sure the site adds except filename to that sponsored post... I think there are also some other methods such as reddit to make images rank high on third party page, just need to find out how... thanks a lot

Removing Low Rank Pages Help Others Shine?
Good Morning! I have a handful of pages that are not ranking very well, if at all. They are not driving any traffic, and are realistically just sorta "there". I have already determined I will not be bringing them over to our new web redesign. My question, could it be in our best interest to try and save these pages with ZERO traction and optimize them? Re-purpose them? Or does having them on our site currently muddy up our other pages? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Not ranking on Bing but is on Google?
Hi What are the main differences between Bing and Google in terms of ranking sites? My site is ranking well in Google but in Bing it is very low down and does not deliver much traffic. In Bing webmaster tools there are no warning messages and I had sent in a sitemap back in 2011 and 77 pages are listed, but I had not submitted a URL could this be why my pages are not ranking highly? Or does anybody have a checklist on what a site should offer to get ranking on Bing?

How to Build High Quality eCommerce Web Site during Low Quality Web Pages?
Today, I was reading Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: More guidance on building high-quality sites. I found one interesting statement over there. Low-quality content on some parts of a website can impact the whole site’s rankings. Why should I like to discuss on this topic? Because, I have made big change on my website via narrow by search. I want to give specific result to know more about it. This is my category page: http://www.vistastores.com/patio-umbrellas Left narrow by search section is creating accurate page for specific attribute products. California Umbrella:

Should product searches (on site searches) be noindex?
We have a large new site that is suffering from a sitewide panda like penalty. The site has 200k pages indexed by Google. Lots of category and sub category page content and about 25% of the product pages have unique content hand written (vs the other pages using copied content). So it seems our site is labeled as thin. I'm wondering about using noindex paramaters for the internal site search. We have a canonical tag on search results pointing to domain.com/search/ (client thought that would help) but I'm wondering if we need to just no index all the product search results. Thoughts?

Well Ranked National Site - Need Local Rankings
We are a virtual company doing business in 30 states nationwide. All our business is done via the phone, fax, email and express mail. Back in 2008 I optimized our small 8 page website for our key terms and was able to rank the site #1 nationally for our main keywords. (I did a 6 month consulting gig for the company). The site remained #1 in Google until last year when some serious competitors entered the space and knocked us down to the middle of page one. Then with the Panda update #1 & #2 we have seen our traffic drop 50% mostly due to not receiving the City + Keywords rankings any more. I have now been hired full time to bring us back but my question is this Do I need to build out city specific pages on the existing website? Do I need to buy keyword specific domains and create microsites? Do a combination of both? I would love to do both but I have to prioritize my efforts. Any thoughts would be great.
