You might also check out elance.com. I have hired web designers from here before and had pretty good experiences

Hey, I know a great designer, loads of experience but just starting out on his own so will do this kind of thing for the right money. Fire me a private message and ill hook you up with his details.

Yeh I think those are all great selections, I guess we were looking at the top terms and scaling down from them instead of up, going after ASOS is more an aspirational goal but definitely we are also concentrating on the funnel and item specific keywords (diesel zaghor 6a etc) as these are doing well for us, it's such a competitive space though we're looking at all angles!
I like the infographic idea - anyone know anyone good at producing them?
Thanks all! You've been a great help

It can't hurt to pay for the Yahoo directly link however I have not noticed one competitor dominating another because of that one link. I have seen many sites without that link dominate others with it.
You are on the right track with blogging and social media.
I would think in your industry photos and video go a long way. I like Marcus's suggestion below (doing a history of mens jeans). Since consumers are visual it's important to integrate an image or video where ever you can. For material products some people may search on google via the images tab so they can see photos.

I totally agree with Matt here, work around the edges and think of those terms as the eventual target but you want to be ranking for some modified versions of those before you pour all your effort into those big hitters.
I would sort of work down a funnel (keywords are made up) with each success meaning I am closer to the big hitters:
diesel blue mens jeans uk
diesel blue mens jeans
blue mens jeans
mens jeansIt's also worth considering that those big terms maybe quite volatile and indicate someone in the browsing stage of their purchase rather than primed ready to buy.

Do you really want to be competing with ASOS for that kind of term? I mean, sure, in the long run why not?! But for now, being such a new site, I would recommend picking off some of the smaller search terms and feeding from ASOS's crumbs.
-
If you have a budget, it won't hurt, but those look like big terms so working with bloggers, guest blogging, tons of interesting jean related content is going to be more scaleable. I wonder if you could come up with some kind of really groovy infographic driven posts to try and pick up some sharing of that content, maybe a history of mens jeans or some such...
Also, there is no shame at picking around the edges and working into those big terms over time + having a strong incentive for people to connect socially so you can push offers at them.
Best of luck!

Thanks Marcus,
We're selling men's fashion and our market is google.co.uk we are receiving good search traffic considering we're only open 1 month, about 100 uniques a day. We have a good blog, good social media and a small portion of advertising on fashion blogs along with a strong product selection. I am just working on ways to tackle 3 of our high volume search phrases (mens jeans for example) who have competitors like ASOS.com and the big boys like that. We are considering putting more budget into communicating with bloggers also....

Well, it's not cheap, and it's going to build you a ranking off one directory link. It won't hurt, may even help a bit, but without some kind of perspective of where you are and where you want to be, it's hard to recommend as the best bang for your buck.
Any more info on your current situation? What else are you doing to help get more traffic? What is the business and competition like?

Maintaining or improving keyword ranking
I started a second website recently and it is doing very well. I am on the first page for a competitive keyword - spot 5 according to Moz. It is actually a category page that is ranking so well which is a surprise to me as I have read many times that I should deindex category pages due to duplicate content! My questions: 1. How do I get backlinks to a CATEGORY page?! I have been able to get backlinks to certain posts because my website is a deal blog and other deal blogs give me credit for popular deals by linking to my post. 2. How can I maintain this high ranking? Of course I want in spot 3 but this website isn't even 2 months old so I know I should be patient. At this point, I just want to stay on the first page. What is the best way to do that? I am about to fill out the SEO stuff for the category page which I haven't done yet. Thanks!

Why articles submitted to squidoo not indexed by google
Hi, I have written a few articles and uploaded to squidoo/hubpage last month and they have been accepted and I can see the links in the articles. But they dont appear in the latest link report from Google Webmaster Tools. Is it because it's delay or Google simply wont treat them as valid links? Thanks

How to work with directories for SEO?
Hi, How many directory links do you tend to build in 1 month? And what do you look for in a directories before you submit? I could build 2 links a day from directories but the thought of 60 links being built a month from directories shouts bad news to me. I've had a look and come across a few directories with high DA/PA but at the end of the day they are just link directories, no content, lots of thin pages with lots of links pointing out. A couple of examples of good directories would help. Cheers

How long before backlinks take effect?
In general how long would it take for Google to update the SERP after it found the external link activity? Does it depend on the website the link is on as? So for example, after it found a link on the BBC would the SERP update a lot quicker then after a link on a small blog? Maybe Google updates on a certain day?

How important are directory submissions to my off-page SEO?
Hi Guys, One area of my link building that I carry out is looking for online directories and social bookmarking websites to submit my website to. I do this in order to gain some backlinks to my website. What I want to know is are they really worth my time, and if so, which types would you say are the most important? I have obviously been through many directory lists, both on SEOmoz and on other websites, and also performed various searches to find relevant directories to my website. I just feel that posting up a link that lies deep in a directory online that, more often than not, have very low PA and lots of outbound links will offer very little in terms of SEO. If anything, this could really bring down the quality of my links and be detrimental to my website, right? This is a subject that I have been thinking about for a while and especially with the recent algorithm update from Google and the attack on many web directories that are, lets say, 'not playing by the rules', I'm worried that this will have a negative impact for my website. Let me know your thoughts guys and if you have any tips on how to get higher quality links from these kind of submission then I'm all ears! Matt.

Does Google consider just the first link?
I have a site and all links that go to homepage have the same ancor text and they are always before entire page (in my navigation menu). I would like to know if Google consider just the first link? If so, Should I put my navigation menu after entire page? Tks
