Transfer of website to maintain SEO
-
I am nearly finished building a new wordpress website to replace the old static HTML site which is currently doing very well in SERPs. My old site is currently hosted by a company who owns the site, my domain is registered with a different company and I have the nameservers pointed at Cloudflare. I have built my new site and have it hosted with a different company and I wish to keep the domain name registered with the company it is currently with.Is there an order that I should follow to move from the old site to the new site using my current domain name so that I minimize any impact on SEO. I built the new site with the same URL structure to maintain linking benefit. thanks

thanks Cyrus. I want to keep the current domain and move it from the old host to the new host. Old site stays with the old host - they own it. New site is already with the new host and nearly done residing on a test url that I need to change to the existing domain

Hi Brett,
I assume you want to keep the new hosting? And your domain is still on the test URL? There are a lot of ways to do this. The method below is just one. First you want to transfer your wordpress site to a directory with your new URL.
1. With your new hosting company, you'll set up a new domain (name of the domain you want to host) but don't change any DNS settings or change your nameservers yet.
2. You'll have to transfer all your files to that new domain. This means copying all the files over and adjusting your database settings, if need be.
Couple of guides to help out:
http://www.seo.com/blog/site-migration-cheat-sheet-quickly-easily-move-wordpress-to-a-new-domain/http://yoast.com/move-wordpress-blog-domain-10-steps/
3. When your files are all set up, you can change your nameservers. There might be some downtime if everything isn't configured right in your wordpress files, so it's best do do this during down time.
If you don't have too much downtime, the SEO impact should be minimal and short-term, at best.
Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Great article and I have done much of this already. The part that I am missing is the technical steps from my old site to new using the same domain name. Since I have the new site on a test url I will need to get it on the domain that I have my old site on. Just not sure of all of the steps and in what order.

We had a great post about that a few months ago at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos that should help you out!

Optimized filename management for SEO
Hi, I'm currently undertaking a project to manage better my images and to rank for image searches. My site uses mod_pagespeed to optimises images, therefore image urls are changed to a pretty seo unfriendly url or even sometimes inlined within my page. On top of that I generally resize all my images by passing the desired file dimension within the image url in order to optimise the loading time of my site. Is there a way to provide a hint to google that I have a much better quality image with higher dimensions and better name? Can i specify within my image sitemap an image that actually does have different dimensions and a different within the page it serves? Are there better tricks to achieve that? Thanks in advance

How to handle pagination for a large website?
I am currently doing a site audit on a large website that just went through a redesign. When looking through their webmaster tools, they have about 3,000 duplicate Title Tags. This is due to the way their pagination is set up on their site. For example. domain.com/books-in-english?page=1 // domain.com/books-in-english?page=4 What is the best way to handle these? According to Google Webmaster Tools, a viable solution is to do nothing because Google is good at distinguishing these. That said, it seems like their could be a better solution to help prevent duplicate content issues. Any advice would be much welcomed. 🙂

One of our competitors ranks for everything related to there term on their website and industry at position #1 They are not actively doing SEO, Poor backlink structure from the research that we have carried out No fresh content being generate I was wondering if someone would perhaps mind spending 5 mins having a quick look to see what you think as i can't think what we might have missed. Tim.

How to SEO a Website Built off Godaddy?
I have a client whose website is built off Godaddy services. I know Godaddy is not the right choice for building a website, but what's done is done. The client has already bought the Godaddy services and there's no way I can tell him to go rebuild his website before we could optimize it for SEO. I'm already facing a lot of challenges while optimizing on-page elements. When I wanted to verify the ownership for Google Analytics and Webmaster Tool via his Godaddy account. the process failed many times. it looks like Godaddy is using some kind of caching not allowing us to modify the codes. For example, I'd applied the site verification codes for Webmasters Tool 48 hours ago, and the metatag for google site verification is not yet updated in the frontend. It's quite frustrating. What would you suggest?
