Smashing Magazine SEO article today: Question about a few things in it...
-
First off, here is the link - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/06/28/content-creators-benefit-from-new-seo/
Right,
Number 5 and particularly this part:
'Quick tip for creatives: Set up a personal Google+ profile and incorporate the
rel=author
link into your published content. (Instructions on how to do this are provided in the next section.)'- Create a personal Google+ profile page with a high-quality headshot;
- Validate your email address;
- In the byline of any content that you create, set the anchor text to be your name as it appears in your Google+ profile, and link to your profile with a URL that looks like this:
https://plus.google.com/102318046680468697385?rel=author
. - When your content is published, link back to its URL from the “Contributor to” section of your Google+ profile.
So lets say you got a Google+ profile, you got a guest post going out on a Auth website, in the byline you have an anchor text link (which is your profile name) and your linking to your profile page.
The guest post goes up, you go into your Google+ profile and link to the guest post through 'Contributor to'.
How does this benefit your websites rankings? The only thing I can see it benefiting is the blog the guest post is on??

Hello,
You inquired in another post (http://www.seomoz.org/q/ideas-needed-for-onsite-seo#post-99529) about this Q&A and why my picture appears next to my SEOmoz results in SERPs.
For SEOmoz, I added a link to my G+ profile page on my author page, and I also added a link from my G+ page to my SEOmoz author page. Now my SEOmoz results show with my picture next to them.
How does this benefit your websites rankings? The only thing I can see it benefiting is the blog the guest post is on??
In short, it does not offer a direct benefit. It is not designed to either. Indirectly, it can offer a benefit.
Let's forget search engines exist for a moment and think about how guest blogging works. You have a niche site on gardening. You would like more readers. You recognize Better Homes & Garden is a popular magazine in your niche. You publish an article in the magazine. In the footer, you mention your website. If your article is well written and helpful, some readers will then want to learn more about you, the author. They may visit your site. Additionally, they may become a bit more familiar with your name and image, so the next time they see it they have an opportunity to recognize you.
This same logic applies to guest blogging as well. If you were to post the same article on the Better Homes and Garden website, all the same logic applies. The only difference is you would have a link to your website. That link offers two additional benefits. First, it is easier for users to click a link after reading an article on a pc then remember the URL after reading the magazine and visiting your website later. Secondly, Google and other search engines recognize the link has value therefore the link may help your rankings.
Now let's loop back to your authorship. Every time you publish an article related to your niche it improves your recognition and therefore your status as an author (assuming the articles are of a quality nature). There may be a slight benefit in this regard recognized by Google. Also, since your image appears in SERP next to your guest blog article, users may later see your image next to another article on your site and then be more likely to click on that result due to the recognition factor.

Not sure if this will answer your question entirely, but the association of a contributor tells Google who wrote the article. So in time, the author is building up a brand presence due to the various places online where their content is being used on.

Does embedded content (from my site) help seo
hi i am creating a new accommodation site and will have some great videos on it (fly bys of local beaches and virtual tours of hotels etc). from an seo perspective i have two questions: 1. should i host on my own site or youtube/vimeo - its a new site but in the long run i want my site to get the credit 2. i will be giving the hotels the chance to embed and video content i have on their own sites. does this help my own seo juice and if so is there a particular way it should be done. there will be around 90 well established local hotels in total so figured it should add up.

Will this Blog Tool hurt our SEO
Hi, We have come across this tool that we are considering using for some of our blog posts. We will still continue posting our own post blogs weekly, we will just use this if we come across anything interesting. Our concern is it will produce duplicate content from other sites. We are very new to blogging. https://home.passle.net/ Will this hurt our SEO? Will it improve it? Or will it make no difference? All thoughts welcomed please. Thanks Andrew

Article Backlinks To Product Pages
I am writing a number of 500 word articles and have read that Top 10 lists are becoming more and more popular on the web. So my thoughts are to write an article about the the 'Top 10 Mens Grooming Products 2013' for example. My questions is - do I post this article on my own website with the 10 links to the product pages using the product name as 'anchor text', or post the article to somewhere like Squidoo containing the links to my product pages. Which strategy has more SEO value?

SEO Submission Service or Ads on Blogs?
1. Can anyone recommend a good SEO Submission Service? Or do you not recommend using them? 2. What do you think is a better way to build links? Directory listings or place ads on blog sites? Each post a blogger post would have the ad link. Thoughts?

Yahoo! Directory Category Question
The listing for my company was buried in a bad category in the Yahoo! Directory that had no Page Authority. I was able to get them to remove the old listing because I couldn't find the account info for the individual that originally created it. I resubmitted and they didn't put my site in the category that I requested but the Page Authority of the category that I was placed in is 50. Is this OK? Or should I repeal and ask them to move it to the category that I had originally requested which I feel would be more relevant for my company and listing which also has a 50 PA?

Social Bookmarking as part of an SEO strategy?
Hi all, I was wondering on my commute to work this morning the effectiveness of Social Bookmarking as part of a SEO campaign. The sites I work on generally have the social bookmarking widgets and they do get used by website visitors. In addition to this we also bookmark our sites, new articles and other new content within the top 5 social bookmarking sites. This is all done as part of a wider social strategy. But could I be spending my time better else where? Whats everyones thoughts on Social Bookmarking and do you incorporate it in your SEO campaigns? Cheers Aran UPDATE: I note that SEOmoz Q&A only have Tweet, Like and Stumble...
