A challenge! What off-page strategies would you employ first when ranking a brand new small business website?

I'd love to hear what you guys do. I think the game has changed now in the era of Penguin. Gone are the days where you can build a few quick links and suddenly your new site is ranking fairly well.
Obviously, the first steps are to get the on page SEO right - titles, good keyword use, etc.
Eventually, the goal may be to build some content that will attract natural links. But, we all know that is going to take time.
So, here's the scenario:
You've got a new client with a website in a fairly non-competitive niche, say, a piano mover in Seattle. The site is indexed, with no external backlinks. You're happy with the current on page SEO. The site is currently ranking on page 3 for "Seattle Piano Mover". What would you do next?

I would also suggest claiming and tidying up the Google+ Local/Google Places entry for the business (or creating one if it does not exist) and ensure that the business is listed consistently in all the major directories in order that it is clear where they are and how to contact them.
Asking satisfied clients/customers for reviews or feedback, or pointing them in the general direction, can also help.

These might not work for piano movers but for small professional office here are some low-hanging fruits that I can think of for links.
- landlord (some brag about their tenants)
- chamber of commerce (often link to members, write blog post, become an officer for profile link)
- community directories (they feature local businesses, write blog post)
- professional associations (link to members, write blog post, become an officer for profile link)
- clients (write a blog post for them)
- suppliers (often link to local product vendors/customers or write blog post for them)
- professional schools (often link to successful grads, write blog post)
- license boards (link to licensees, write blog post)
- other local businesses with synergy (write blog post, become one of their "recommended")
- local newspapers (write article for online edition)
- local BBB (get in directory, write blog post)
- write for professional journal online edition
- local city government/organizations (directory, blogs, supporters, volunteers)

Good additional strategy is to purchase and 301 redirect an expired, aged domain (or several) that already has a few dozen authoritative domains linking to it, preferably a domain with history in the same niche.. this usually results in a nice boost - but it may take several weeks to take affect. Fire a few links at the expired domain to speed up the process.

He probably just needs a handful of links from local sources. Maybe local business associations, etc.
If it is very niche and local, you have very little work to do compared to a site that needs to rank for a competitive keyword nationally. But you already knew that!

As for me, I'd kick back and pat myself on the back and say job done good ... Number 3 aint nowt to be sad about
I once did a site for a client, and offered basic SEO as part of the build, clearly stating that I would insure the site structure would be fine, proper use of heading tags, good meta description, the basic stuff.
Anyway, he said he would love to rank high for School Cleaning Ireland, the phrase itself was so niche, as soon as the new site was indexed, he ranked number 2 in Google.ie
The guy was over the moon with me ... Got three new jobs from referrals (just web build) ...
Anyway, the moral, I have not done a thing with his website in over 8 months, my job was just to build it for him, I have just checked Google.ie, and he now ranks number one for that very phrase, without an iota of content changing on his website, I know that for sure as it is a static HTML ...
Sometimes niche words need very little work at all

New site failing to rank - could this be why?
I have a new client site that is not appearing anywhere in the top 100 for its main keywords. ASSUMING that this is not an issue with optimization or link quality, I am wondering whether it might be the following... The client's company has a parent company whose website has decent authority. This website links to the new (client) website. In addition, the 2 press releases we have done include links to both companies, since one was an outgrowth of the other. This is all 100% natural, so my inclination is that this is not causing the issue. But does anyone have any experience to suggest otherwise? That having website A linking to website B, and 50+ press release websites linking to both, could be causing the algorithm to throttle website Bs ability to rank? Thanks in advance!

New Domain VS New Page Backlink?
Assuming you've already got a link from:

sitea.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) You have two choices for another link: 1. Another link on the same domain but a new page:
sitea.com/page2 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) 2. A link on a new domain but with a lesser domain & page rank
siteb.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 30, Moz page rank 20) Assuming you have no other links to your site - both sites are relevant to your industry, both 5 years old, both have the same number of visitors/external links/ads and the content and anchor text remains the same. Page Rank Worse After Optimization
For a long time, we had terrible on page SEO. No keyword targeting, no meta titles or descriptions. Just a brief 2-4 sentence product description and shipping information. Strangely, we weren't ranking too bad. For one product, we were ranking on page 1 of Google for a certain keyword. My goal to reach the top of page 1 would be easy (or so I thought). I have now optimized this page to rank better for the same keyword. I have a 276 word description with detailed specifications and shipping information. I have a strong title and meta description with keywords and modifers. I have also included a video demonstration, additional photos and an PDF of the owners manual. In my eyes, the page is 100% better than it ever was. In the eyes of MOZ, it's better also. I've got an A with the On-Page Grader. Why is this page now ranking on page 8 of Google? What have I done wrong? What can I do to correct it?

SEOmoz is only crawling 2 pages out of my website
I have checked on Google Webmaster and they are crawling around 118 pages our of my website, store.itpreneurs.com but SEOmoz is only crawling 2 pages. Can someone help me? Thanks Diogo

301 Redirecting multiple domains to brand new domain
Hi guys, I have read quite a bit of stuff on 301 redirects after Penguin. Hoping someone could help me out. im looking at a way to do a legit 301 redirect without passing the penalty. I have acquired two businesses, business1 and business2, that both had websites that were hit by penguin. Ive anaylsed there backlinks and theres a lot of spammy forum links and comments and I was also informed they were both using buildmyrank. A side note, buiness2 only started using BMR after it noticed business1 have large amounts of high PR links. business1.com was ranking at position 1 till the penguin hit. Business2.com was ranking around page 2 I work in the same arena as these two businesses and didnt generate any business via the internet. When these 2 businesses failed (due to loss of rankings and traffic) i decided to take them over. What I am thinking of doing is 301'ing both business domains to my brand new, zero links, domain which will be the name of my new company. I will combine the content from both sites, around 1000 pages, in to the new one. So my question is, does 301'ing multiple domains, that target the same keywords, and operate in the same niche, look less "spammy" then 301'ing 1 domain? I'm trying to look at it in the eyes of google. It is a legit merging of businesses. Thanks for your help, really appreciate your time

Pages that were ranking now are not?
Hi Folks Noticed something strange just now pages that were ranking on position 10 on Google for searches such as 'ufc trainer kinect best price' at the start of this week are no longer ranking? Is what has happened to the site the famous google dance or sandbox effect as the site only officially went live on Monday If this is the case what is the recommended course of action to get back ranking competitively again? as I have no idea on what has gone wrong as I has always tried to follow best practice from these forums and the SEOMOZ and YOUMOZ articles My site is www.cheapfindergames.com Many Thanks Ian
