Why are there so few Best Answers?
-
Why do so many great responses in this forum never get labeled as the "Best Answer". Questioners should realize that many experts give them great advice for free and the least they can do is to show some sort of appreciation by giving a thumbs up.
-
I think that your mention of poetry actually touches on another semi-imporant point... people respond well to humor/informality. Professionalism is all well and good, but at the end of the day, someone with a simple question doesn't want to read through a paragraph and a half of SEO jargon and technical advice.
If you can state something simply, do so. And while you're at it, if you can make them smile while reading, do that too.
-
I never realized the behind the scenes efforts you guys put into this forum. Kudos! Another idea to encourage people to close out their questions and leave feedback is to remind them when they login, that they have X amount of questions that aren't closing and awaiting feedback (like eBay). An email would probably be very effective as well. I wouldn't expect a great response from the initial new answer email as our psyche thinks that someone will come along with a better answer and we wait and forget to come back. and close out the question.

Per Keri's response, I have been amazed for some time by the staff at SEOmoz and their desire to see all questions answered. They are amazing, provide their own qualified insights, and when necessary seek out the expertise of others.
As to Irving's why do more not respond with thumbs and best's, I would say that there have been times that I actually thought I wrote such an amazing answer the entire world would thumb it up only to have...nothing happen. But, there have been others where I was just answering the question and the next day had 4 or 5 thumbs up and a good answer. Sooo, go figure.
By the way, I did have one occurrence when I was (probably unjustly) given some quality thumbs up in an answer where I included poetry... No S%$!.
So, if all else fails and you've given your best, don't feel downtrodden and for god's sake don't rest!
Pick up that pen and write more advice, when the thumbs up finally come, its cause your smart and your nice.
Cheers.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! We really appreciate hearing how you use Q&A and how you'd like to see it improved.
I do go back at times and ask if people have had their question solved or if they're looking for more help. An automatic way to ask the person this after a certain number of days would be a great feature to have, I agree. Our system does notify people when they get a new answer, and suggests to them to mark an answer helpful.
Even though I don't comment on many of the questions, I do read nearly every question and answer that comes into Q&A. I flag questions that have no answers or questionable answers for another Associate to come and review, I give lots of thumbs up (and an occasional thumb down), and endorse good answers (and need to do that more).
One factor in some of this is that if a person came in on a free trial, asked a few questions and took time to implement them, by the time they figured out if their problem was solved or they needed more help their free trail has expired and they can no longer comment on Q&A questions. When I have extra time, I start looking through questions that are still marked as unanswered that are either 7 or 30 days old, and follow up to see if there is an answer to the question and the OP just didn't mark answered, ask if followup is needed, etc.
Please do continue to give your suggestions here, both for the software system and for the administration. We are looking even if we don't comment, and really do find the feedback helpful.

I was thinking along those lines as well. SEOmoz needs to encourage questioners to leave feedback and close out their questions by marking Good Answer. I will reach out to Rand and company.
-
Based on your response, I am thinking that SEOmoz needs to follow up with questioners after a select time period to close out their questions by marking Good Answer to any answers they feel were truly helpful.
-
Hear, hear! I have personally spent an hour on a response, solved someones problem pretty much and they did not even bother to thumb up. Sometimes SEOMoz staff are on point but really, more often than not, it's not the case.
Q&A can be fun, it's good to share, but it's nice to get a thumbs up for your effort. After all, I would rather be at home with my kids than answering a strangers question so... it really should be encouraged to say thank you, it's only polite after all.
My own theory is that often, people ask questions, and whilst you give the right answer, it is not what they want to hear so they don't thumb up, or mark as a good answer as it was not the 'right' answer.
Really, the Q&A needs more admins to reward the people who put the effort into help others.
As a suggestion, a 'you need to leave feedback' type system could help educate users on the etiquete required to drive the Q&A.

Questioners also probably aren't as interested in the MozPoint system as they are with just getting an answer.
Additionally, inserting yourself into conversations online can be somewhat intimidating to the uninitiated, and it's possible they choose to maintain as low a profile as possible. Thus, they don't post unless absolutely necessary, and refrain from using the "thumbs up/down" or "best answer" post modifiers.
Just my guess.
Edit: Also, if only the person asking the question can mark an answer as "good," what qualifies them to do so? They were the ones with the question to begin with, so unless they act on some advice, they can't be sure whether or not it will work. So, say they act on the advice and it does work... well, they probably aren't as concerned with coming back to SEOmoz just to give some random person +4 points.

Sitemap Best Practices
My question is regarding the URL structure best practices of a sitemap. My website allows search any number of ways, i.e. 1. http://www.website.com/category/subcategory/product 2. http://www.website.com/subcategory/product 3. http://www.website.com/product However, I am not sure which structure to use in the sitemap (which is being written manually). I know that for SEO purposes the 3rd option is best as the link is more relevant to that individual product, but the Moz tool states that the home page should have less than 100 links (although Google doesn't penalise for having more) and by writing my entire site in the 3rd way it would result in a lot more links adjoining to the home page. It is either the 2nd or 3rd option, I think, as the 1st category is not keyword specific (rather a generic term, i.e. novelties). Does anyone have experience with this?

New to Moz, need some probably basic answers about Keywords, Linking, Competitors and General SEO
Hi, So I have quite a lot of data colelcted about my site now, regarding keyword research, page crawling and competitor research ect. But I find myself second guessing myself about what I have done and what to do next. I have done basic research for as many relevant keywords I could think of to my site, including branded and non branded terms. If the main competitive keywords for my niche are very competitive, shall I start doing more research for long tail keywords and only try to rank for them? Does is matter how many keywords I am doing research for? Does is matter how many keywords I try to optimise for each webpage? Are the amount of branded keywords I am researching skewing my results? As they are all ranked #1, but nearly all of the non branded keywords are much further down the list... Once I have decided what keywords are worth trying to ranking for for each page, are the techniques to actually rank more highly for them - Title, H1 Tag, Description, Meta Data, Fresh Content and using the keywords on the page? Or are there more techniques I haven't heard of? Under Keyword Rankings - I noticded that some of my keywords are directing to specific pages, like "Cavity Waxes" is directing to the URL ending in .com/cavity-waxes - How do you assign the keywords im researching to specific URLs? - Or does Moz do it automatically? As most of my keywords seem to be unassigned to any URL, is that because they are not ranking highly enough? How do I best use the data collected through Moz? Good practices? Techniques? Tips and Tricks? What is the best practice for finding potential link partners and asking them for mutual linking? Techniques for finding partners that are likely to link with us, but still provides link juice. I must apologise for this long-winded set of questions, but these are troubling me! Any help would be greatly appreciated, Kind regards, Max Johnson

SEO-Experts help answer my newbie questions!
Hello! Thanks for coming to my rescue; I really appreciate it. I am a newbie at SEO and I still haven't got the full picture of everything in my mind that covers linkbuiling, on page optimization, domain names, website creating, etc. I've really pretty much all the available guides on WarriorForum and BHW without much help on the topics above since most of the information was either provided by some person who didn't know what they were talking about, the information was outdated, or I didn't know what they meant. I have so many questions that I hope some SEO-Expert could answer my newbie questions so that I won't get penalized for my two sites that I currently own. One of them was slapped by Yahoo!, Bing, AOL, and most other search engines with the exception of Google (It's only a matter of time of course). The other site I own is in the making currently without much on-page optimization. Before I start doing some on-page depletion t to my two sites so they both get de-indexed and such because of keyword stuffing, fail link building, and other factors, I wanted to cover the problems I currently have about SEO and this site. 1) Using the SEO-MOZ 'keyword analysis tool', what is the ideal percentage difficulty a newbie like me could take easily with just a few links here and there including 5 posts/pages of great content? (I usually only write 5 posts that cover 500+ words each). 2) Do I need hosting to become successful or to get more on-page optimization for my websites? I currently use Go-Daddy forwarding with masking so that when my site shows up in google the content comes from blogger. 3) What is "Self Cannibalization"? I ALWAYS get that error for both my sites when I use the 'on page optimzation tool' from SEO-MOZ. 4) Using Blogger, What exactly are labels and does using this add any SEO value to my website? 5) I've read so many damn articles about ALT text and Title text for blogger; nothing explained what I put in it though. What am I supposed to put in it that will help me with my on page optimization? (Stuff like do I use spaces or dashes, do I put my keyword in there, how many characters should I not exceed, do I put one word or two words?) 6) On my website, I 'accidentally' didn't know that copy and pasting images from paint straight to blogger would be a bad idea because in the html I saw it was f'ed up because there was literally random characters everywhere for the file name. Since my site is a tutorial site, I have over 50+ images in all my posts combined that I've copied and pasted from paint.exe to the Blogger post. Should I reupload all of them to blogger or keep it the way it is? Will I be penalized for this or nothing would happen? Is there a benefit to fixing it? 7) For a new website that is less than 1 week old, when can I start building backlinks? If I can start building backlinks now, what is the ideal number per day that I should create? 😎 Does post every single page or post of content I have on my website to other Web 2.0s like Squidoo, Wordpress, or Blog penalize my website for duplicate content or what? If I do this, does it give me any SEO benefit? 9) How much stronger is a .gov backlink than a .edu backlink? How much stronger are both of those compared to a regular extension backlink? 10) If I am building backlinks, should I link just my main home page URL or all internal URLs to? 11) I see several people that build backlinks to other websites by typing in a comment and throwing their link in there. Like question 10, should I post ALL the links to my website (Internal + Home) or just my main page link? 12) What is better; .com, .net, or .org? What about .info, .us, and .biz in terms of SEO benefit? 13) I have several pages on my site in which Google indexed them and I deleted the post. Now when I search my site on Google and I click on the link to the post, it is pretty much a 'dead link' because the post cannot be found. Does this harm my site in any way, and how can I take these dead pages off? 14) One of my sites is already indexed by Google but not Yahoo! What should I do to get my site indexed? It's already been about a week. Thanks for attempting to answers my questions. I don't have anything to give, but, I can choose 3 'good answers' for helping me!

Convince me to stay! How should I best use SEOMoz tools.
Hey folks. I'm here on a free trial and I'm really loving the Q&A forum. I've learned a lot in the last couple of days. I've been playing around with the SEOMoz tools and campaigns and I'm trying to decide if it will be worth it for me to pay the monthly fee to continue with these once my trial is up. I direct two main websites. One is an informational site and the other is a real estate site. I've started a campaign for each and so far we're still waiting for a crawl. (I'm assuming that will happen on Sunday). I've played around with some of the tools. They keyword difficulty tool is cool but I can't see me using it a whole lot. The rest is just a little overwhelming...I'm not sure where to start. So what should I be checking out next? Have at 'er and convince me to stay!
