Dynamic page
-
I have few pages on my site that are with this nature
/locator/find?radius=60&zip=&state=FL
I read at Google webmaster that they suggest not to change URL's like this
"According to Google's Blog (link below) they are able to crawl the simplified dynamic URL just fine, and it is even encouraged to use a simple dynamic URL ( " It's much safer to serve us the original dynamic URL and let us handle the problem of detecting and avoiding problematic parameters. " )
_http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/dynamic-urls-vs-static-urls.html _It can also actually lead to a decrease as per this line: " We might have problems crawling and ranking your dynamic URLs if you try to make your urls look static and in the process hide parameters which offer the Googlebot valuable information. "The URLs are already simplified without any extra parameters, which is the recommended structure from Google:"Does that mean I should avoid rewriting dynamic URLs at all?
That's our recommendation, unless your rewrites are limited to removing unnecessary parameters, or you are very diligent in removing all parameters that could cause problems"I would love to get some opinions on this also please consider that those pages are not cached by Google for some reason.

I think this is an answer that goes beyond Google. We use rewrites extensively and do not have any problems. There are some caveats
- Regarding GoogleBot missing information, you just need to make sure that the new URL has all the info.
Lets say you are a plumbing portal and use
/locator/find?radius=60&zip=&state=FL
rewrite to
/plumbers/florida-fl/miami/33110/
Your search radius can be a default value vs having to put it in as a parameter.
It helps with site structure to think of things as how they would be as a static directory. In this case, you are actually giving more information to GoogleBot with the rewritten URL vs the old one as you have included who you are searching for (a plumber) the city (miami), state (fl) and zip code (33110). The previous URL only indicated the state. If you dont like using all the folders, you can simply have a longer file name with dashes in between the words.
-
If you use rewrites, make sure Google is not spidering the original URLs otherwise you get penalized for duplicate errors. Monitoring Webmaster Tools or using spider software will help you find the holes. You can then use things like Canonical Links and Noindex Tags to get the old URLs out of the index and make sure Google has the correct pages. This all depends on how you implement your rewrites.

If you take some time to look at how you want to organized your site to start with then the first two items will take care of themselves usually. A good exercise is to write down how all of this would work within a breadcrumb navigation. This forces you to get organized and also helps you setup how you want all your pages to be shown to Google. If you do start to add parameters on top of this basic structure like pagination or other sortable options, you need to think how you would noindex, follow those pages to make sure that your main page would rank for a given key phrase vs all the other sorted versions of the same page.

One thing that is overlooked in setting up this kind of structure is that you can use it to your advantage in your analytic tools to look at global trends to your site. This could be in any site. Using the example above, all US states are at the 2nd level directory, cities are 3rd and zip is 4th. Makes it really super easy to use a regexp on urls to group them. For example, you could setup a filter in you analytics to easily combine all sessions that looked at pages in Florida and wanted to see what the next action was.
Cheers!

Hi,
I think that this does not mean, that you have to avoid rewriting dynamic urls at all but take care of the accessibility of your information.
for your url it could be interesting to build your domain like:
/locator/florida/find?radius=60
/locator/24786/find?radius=60or even better:
/stores-near-florida/find?range=60 /stores-near-24786/find?range=60
the suggestion of google just sais, that you have to avoid that information is being lost by mapping your dynamic url to a static. you should leave the radius parameter in the url because google could vary this parameter.

404 Hurricane Update Page After?
Hi All, I am wondering if anyone could help me decide how I should go about handling a page i plan on removing and could possibly use later on. So, a perfect example is: Let's say a company in Florida posted a page about the stores hours and possibly closing due to the incoming hurricane. Once the hurricane passes and the store is reopened, should I 404 that page since another hurricane could come after? The url for the company is www.company.com/hurricane so this is a url that we would want to use again. I guess we could just 410 and name each url www.company.com/hurricane-irma & www.company.com/hurricane-jose for each new hurricane. I am just wonder what is the best practice for a situation like this. Thanks for the help!

Removing indexed pages
Hi all, this is my first post so be kind 🙂 - I have a one page Wordpress site that has the Yoast plugin installed. Unfortunately, when I first submitted the site's XML sitemap to the Google Search Console, I didn't check the Yoast settings and it submitted some example files from a theme demo I was using. These got indexed, which is a pain, so now I am trying to remove them. Originally I did a bunch of 301's but that didn't remove them from (at least not after about a month) - so now I have set up 410's - These also seem to not be working and I am wondering if it is because I re-submitted the sitemap with only the index page on it (as it is just a single page site) could that have now stopped Google indexing the original pages to actually see the 410's?

Improving SEO Structure of a Page
Our site is an online Marketplace for Services. Naturally, we have a lot of unique content in the form of :
Technical SEO | | Ideas2life
a) Job Posts
b) Profiles of Service Providers We also have 2 very important pages:
a) The Job Listing Page
b) The Service Provider Page The Listing pages have very valuable H1 Titles, but everything else is duplicate content. To capture those keywords currently in H1, we have created a different landing page for each category page, and we`ll optimize around that, so these H1s are not that big of a deal any more. These landing pages are the key to our SEO strategy and we are building new content every day to help them rank I want to make the Listing Pages No Index Follow. This way they pass Juice to Jobs, and Profiles which have unique contents, but are not indexed themselves. Is this a bad idea? I have been thinking about doing this for over a year but it never felt important enough to be worth the risk of accidentally screwing up We `ll soon do a new on page flow optimization and that's why I am considering this again. Thank you so much in advance Argyris0 -
Page for page 301 redirects from old server to new server
Hi guys:
Technical SEO | | cindyt-17038
I have a client who is moving their entire ecommerce site from one hosting platform (Yahoo Store) to another (BigCommerce) and from one domain to another. The old domain is registered with the Yahoo as of yesterday and we have redirected the old domain (at the domain level) to the new domain. However, we are having trouble getting the pages to redirect page for page. Currently they are all redirecting to the new domain home page. We did just move the old domain from GoDaddy to Yahoo yesterday thinking this would solve it however as of this morning the old pages are still redirecting to the home page of the new domain. To complete the 301 redirect picture, we uploaded the redirects (all relative links for both from and to) to BigCommerce. And while the domain was hosted at GoDaddy with a redirect to the new domain, they were working. We moved the domain to Yahoo because of email issues thinking it should still work. Is it possibly just a waiting game now as the change populates across the DNS? old url to test:

Many Pages Being Combined Into One Long Page
Hi All, In talking with my internal developers, UX, and design team there has been a big push to move from a "tabbed" page structure (where as each tab is it's own page) to combining everything into one long page. It looks great from a user experience standpoint, but I'm concerned that we'll decrease in rankings for the tabbed pages that will be going away, even with a 301 in place. I initially recommending#! or pushstate for each "page section" on the long form content. However there are technical limitations with this in our CMS. The next idea I had was to still leave those pages out there and to link to them in the source code, but this approach may get shot down as well. Has anyone else had to solve for this issue? If so, how did you do it?

Pages not being indexed
Hi Moz community! We have a client for whom some of their pages are not ranking at all, although they do seem to be indexed by Google. They are in the real estate sector and this is an example of one: http://www.myhome.ie/residential/brochure/102-iveagh-gardens-crumlin-dublin-12/2289087 In the example above if you search for "102 iveagh gardens crumlin" on Google then they do not rank for that exact URL above - it's a similar one. And this page has been live for quite some time. Anyone got any thoughts on what might be at play here? Kind regards. Gavin

is pointing to the same page that it is already on, is this a problem?
So we have a wordpress site with the all-in-one-seo-pack installed. I have just noticed in our crawl diagnostics that a canonical tag has been put in place on every single one of our pages, but they are all pointing to the pages that they are already on. Is this a problem? Should I be worried about this and delve more deeply to figure out as to why this has happened and get it removed? Thanks

How to implement a temporary splash page?
Hello - Our company will soon be launching a major product enhancement and we have discussed using a splash page when a visitor hits our homepage to promote the launch. I'm thinking something similar to what Apple did on Apple.com to announce addition of The Beatles catalog ot iTunes. I've never actually implemented anything like this before and wanted to get feedback from the community on how best to handle this from an SEO perspective. Thanks, Jason
