Canonical Link Quesiton
-
I wrote an article that is a page article, but would also be a very good blog post - So my question is two things:
1. If i post it as a static page and syndicate it as a blog post and have it as a canonical link to the page, google will read see the blog and read the page _url as the one with credit correct? In turn not dinging me for duplicate content.
2. Given if the above statement is correct, should I write the blog and put it on my static page referencing the blog or the way i have it as a static page with the blog using a canonical reference back to the page.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Makes sense to me. You just need to make sure that you can handle talk about all these things and keep up with the publishing schedule. Stay focused on your most important categories.
-
One point to keep in mind is which of these versions would you like to come up in a web search as that is one that should be the primary source and have the canonical pointing at it.
-
Clever,
Thanks for that insight - It's like one of those things that almost seems so simple, but overlooked easily.
Regarding that - So I've been reshaping some services page that will split into defined pages for those services, since individually those services are specialized enough that the search value is worth it.
Would you suggest as i put these up start dropping them through blog paragraph/syndication to blog every other day or so - Till we get them all out?

Thanks,
I did do the canonical part from post referring to page, and it's part of a 'resource-center' but also made for a very good piece since it's a prep checklist that i put together for a client.
Otherwise i would have done the post linking, but that's something that will always be there and pretty much wont change. But the value of it regarding this industry/niche was just too good in my opinion to not put out in a blog. Just wanted to do it right.
I appreciate the help.

The canonical is sort of like a 301 redirect without actually redirecting the user reading the page. So yes, if you publish the article, let it get indexed by Google then publish it in the blog with a canonical back to the article page you should be set.
That said, I think the better approach would be to write a shorter snippet of the article and publish that on the blog and then just provide a regular link back to the article a "if you want more information, read the full article). If the blog is on a separate publishing network, you get the added benefit that you now have link (and you can optimize the anchor text) that points from "another site" aka the blog to your article. This helps the article to rank in the SERPS in the long run. You do not need to completely rewrite the article, just a short summary, do make sure it is not a carbon copy of your opening paragraph. This really gives you more bang for the buck as a part of this process.
I really only use the canonical for things like, the printer friendly version of a page pointing to the originals etc.

That all depends...
The canonical stuff is okay.
re the post, if this is a relatively static piece of content that you intend to have on your site for a long time in a prominent position, then have it as a page. If it is transient and you just want a page in a prominent navigation then have it as a post.
It sounds like you have a page and want to make it as a post so just make sure the post has a canonical pointing back to the page so you don't get 'dinged'.
You could always just have this as a post and then add a link to the post in your navigation and avoid the duplication altogether?

Does reciprocal linking carry any value?
No matter how much I research this one, there's no definite answer and there's a lot of contradictions. Basically we're looking to launch an article on 24 expert interior design tips for 2015. Each tip is submitted from a different interior designer we have chosen who have a reputable, trusted website. The main goal for this article is to generate various inbound links for our site from the designers and it will help to create engagement on social media. Although if we're giving out links to these designers for their contributions, the inbound links we receive in return will be little or no value as this is reciprocal linking? Some say this is okay as it's completely natural within the blog posts, others say to avoid it as it can be seen as an obsolete practice to deceive Google. Does anyone have any more information on this and how it should be carried out? Would a better process be to link to their social media accounts? Rather than reciprocal linking? Thanks

Canonicals
We have a client that has his products listed on 20+ different websites, including 4 of his own. Also, he only has 1 of everything, so once he sells it then the product is gone. To battle this duplication issue, plus having a short internet lifespan of less than 4 weeks, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to canonical the products back to the category page. Kind of like using canonical tags on your "used blue widget" and "used red widget" pages back to the "used widgets" page. Would this help with the duplicate content issues? Is this a proper use of a canonical?

Reciprocal links and nofollow tag
What happens if I link to a site using the nofollow tag and they are linking back to me with a dofollow link? Will it give me as much power and link juice as if it was a one way link (to me) or will Google discount the link because it's reciprocal?

Are my canonical re directs working?
Buonjourno from Wetherby UK 🙂 Ive been battlling sometime to get this site http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk to rank for term Right To Manage. Amongst other tactics ive set up a canonical http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/about/right-to-manage.aspx * - Canonical version http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/how-we-care-for-you/right-to-manage.aspx http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/what-our-customers-say/right-to-manage.aspx http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/ - But has this canonical redirect feature worked? The reason i doubt it is i notice when i enter a page http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/what-our-customers-say/right-to-manage.aspx which has the below code in place: rell="canonical" href="http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/About/right-to-manage.aspx/" /> It does not jump to http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/about/right-to-manage.aspx So my question is... "is the canonical redirect working or not & waht is the best way / tool for diagnosing a canonical error" Grazie tanto,

Canonical usage and duplicate content
Hi We have a lot of pages about areas like ie. "Mallorca" (domain.com/Spain/Mallorca), with tabbed pages like "excursion" (domain.com/spain/Mallorca/excursions) and "car rental" (domain.com/Spain/Mallorca/car-rental) etc. The text on ie the "car rental"-page is very similar on Mallorca and Rhodos, and seomoz marks these as duplicate content. This happens on "car rental", "map", "weather" etc. which not have a lot of text but images and google maps inserted. Could i use rel=nex/prev/canonical to gather the information from the tabbed pages? That could show google that the Rhodos-map page is related to Rhodos and not Mallorca. Is that all wrong or/and is there a better way to do this? Thanks, Alsvik

Too many external links?
Ok, so I am finally focusing more on SEO of my hobby website as I am notice the relavent keywords are not really onsite what I want, for example, according to analytics "post" is my most popular keyword which I assume is from the vbulletin forum. My question today is that according to the moz scan, my forum has too many external links, my question is what are some measures I can do whether within the vbulletin forum or custom coding to reduce the amount of links/increase power? www.rcnightmare.com

Which version of pages should I build links to?
I'm working on the site www.qualityauditor.co.uk which is built in Moonfruit. Moonfruit renders pages in Flash. Not ideal, I know, but it also automatically produces an HTML version of every page for those without Flash, Javascript and search engines. This HTML version is fairly well optimised for search engines, but sits on different URLs. For example, the page you're likely to see if browsing the site is at http://www.qualityauditor.co.uk/#/iso-9001-lead-auditor-course/4528742734 However, if you turn Javascript off you can see the HTML version of the page here <cite>http://www.qualityauditor.co.uk/page/4528742734</cite> Mostly, it's the last version of the URL which appears in the Google search results for a relevant query. But not always. Plus, in Google Webmaster Tools fetching as Googlebot only shows page content for the first version of the URL. For the second version it returns HTTP status code and a 302 redirect to the first version. I have two questions, really: Will these two versions of the page cause my duplicate content issues? I suspect not as the first version renders only in Flash. But will Google think the 302 redirect for people is cloaking? Which version of the URL should I be pointing new links to (bearing in mind the 302 redirect which doesn't pass link juice). The URL's which I see in my browser and which Google likes the look at when I 'fetch as Googlebot'. Or those Google shows in the search results? Thanks folks, much appreciated! Eamon
