301 Redirect Issue
-
I'm having an issue with 301 redirects:
Let's see if I can verbalize my thoughts on this one...
So we just recently moved our site to Wordpress. One of our new 301 commands is redirecting oursite.com/news to oursite.com/blog . However there are other links from our previous site that look like oursite.com/news/XYZ and the issue is that, because wordpress structures its links differently, that URL is not equivalent to oursite.com/blog/XYZ. Instead, it might look something more like oursite.com/blog/yaddayadda/XYZ or something. Does that make sense?
The issue is that when I find an old link of ours on google that looks something like "oursite.com/news/XYZ" or "oursite.com/news/ABC" it is automatically replacing "news" with "blog". When I try to go in manually and redirect anything that says "/news/XYZ" to "/blog/yaddayadda/XYZ" it still doesn't work. It still just replaces "news" with "blog."
Wow I realize that might not make sense to anyone but if it does - please advise!!
Thanks!!!!

I did try that. Not sure why it isn't working but I think it has something to do with Tom's answer below. Heh. Thanks though Daniel!!

Wow thanks so much. This might be way over my head (I know very little about web development) but I'm going to talk to our devs about it. Thanks again!!

Ah you have a parameter in the old URL. That ? is the real trick here. because you redirected /news to /blog it will redirect /news?anythingyouputhere to /blog?anythingyouputhere if that makes sense.
Did you try to redirect /blog?tag=business-2 to /blog/category/business yet?

Hi!
The problem you have is that you are using two different Apache extensions and I don't believe you can control the order the go in. You are using mod_alias and mod_rewrite.
It sounds like you have a line like:
Redirect permanent /news/dinosaur/ninja http://www.oursite.com/blog/ninja
This is the mod_alias rule, and it is firing before your mod_rewrite rules (and then it no longer fits their criteria, so they don't fire).
So, what you need to do is change your mod_alias rules into mod_rewrite rules, so then you can control the order (they execute top to bottom, so you just put your 'specific' redirects above your general ones). You rule should look something like this (I've not confirmed!):
RewriteRule ^/news/dinosaur/ninja/$ /blog/ninja/ [L,R=301]
I hope all that make sense. Let me know how you get on!

Hey Daniel. Thanks for your response - the only problem is that we already have /%postname% selected. It is working for mostly every blog entry except this one that I'm running into problems with. I'll show you the exact URL that's giving us the problem.
On google, it shows the URL as:
oursite.com/news?tag=business-2
Then it seems to be redirecting it to:
oursite.com/blog?tag=business-2
However, that site does not exist. It should be
http://oursite.com/category/business
I tried to literally 301 redirect both oursite.com/news?tag=business-2 and http://oursite.com/category/business to http://oursite.com/category/business but neither worked.
Thoughts?

It sounds like more of a permalink issue in wordpress than a redirect issue. Under settings on the left sidebar in your wordpress dashboard is a link called permalinks. Go there and let us know what it says there. You probably want a custom structure that says /%postname%/ so that your blog will make permalinks like site.com /blog/postname instead of site.com /blog/category/postname or whatever else might be going on there.
Get the simple 301 redirect plugin and make sure you do redirect every old URL to its new counterpart, but make sure your new ones look the way you want first.

Delete old blog posts after 301 redirects to new pages?
Hi Moz Community, I've recently created several new pages on my site using much of the same copy from blog posts on the same topics (we did this for design flexibility and a few other reasons). The blogs and pages aren't exactly identical, as the new pages have much more content, but I don't think there's a point to having both and I don't want to have duplicate content, so we've used 301 redirects from the old blog posts to the new pages of the same topic. My question is: can I go ahead and delete the old blog posts? (Or would there be any reasons I shouldn't delete them?) I'm guessing with the 301 redirects, all will be well in the world and I can just delete the old posts, but I wanted to triple check to make sure. Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it!

Console: Change Of Address, 301 Redirects Step Not Working
Hi everyone, We just made a switch to a new domain based on a rebrand, and we are currently directing users who navigate to the homepage of the old site to an interim page on our new site that reads companyname.com/companyname, that then redirects to the actual homepage of the new site, companyname.com. The redirect page's purpose is to tell users about the brand name change before showing them the new site. The challenge is that in the second step of the verification process for the address change, it reads that our domain name request does not correspond because the homepage is directing to this interim page. Is there a way for us to continue to direct people to companyname.com/companyname and have GSC verify that the 301 redirects work properly? Ideally we would not want to direct people from the homepage of the old site to the homepage of the new site. Thank you in advance for your help. Sincerely, Chase VHSpF

301 redirect with Magento; still Page authority 0 after 6 weeks
Hi Mozzers! In December '14 I have execute a 301 redirect in the 'old' page in the admin of my Magento store. Now I was surprised to see that the Page Authority is still 0 of the new page 6 weeks after the execution. should I have seen the update of the PA on the new page already after 6 weeks of time? If yes, then I assume that my Magento didn't execute this properly? Old url: http://hippemamashop.nl/mama/boeken/fotoalbum.html

To 301 or not to 301?
I have a client that is having a new site built. Their old site (WP) does not use the trailing / at the end of urls. The new site is using most of the same url names but IS using the /. For instance, the old site would be www.example.com/products and the new site, also WP, will be www.example.com/products/. WordPress will resolve either way, but my question is whether or not to go in and redirect each matching non / page to the new url that has the /. I don't want to leave any link juice on the table but if I can keep the juice without doing a few hundred 301s that certainly wouldn't suck. Any thoughts? Sleepless in KVegas

301 redirect to new website
We are migrating to a new website that will be using entirely new URLs under the same domain as the old website. The old website is a custom PHP script and the new website uses Drupal. I know that I should use individual 301 redirects to the corresponding new pages. My question is just how to set up the hundreds of 301 redirects from the old website to the new one? Here is the process I've come up with. Please let me know if there is an easier and better way for this. Before actually changing to the new website: download an advanced report with all pages on this domain from OSE. Find corresponding pages on the new website Make the hundreds of 301 redirect lines in an .htaccess file with the following code: redirect 301 /oldurl.html http://domain.com/the-full-url Thanks in advance for your help!

A technical 301 Redirect Question
Alright, I'm taking a chance and stepping into the developer role here...something completely out of my comfort zone so bear with me. We have a pretty site built in PHP (www.dassant.com) and we are coming across some duplicate content issues. For example, these are supposed to be the same page: http://www.dassant.com/products.php and http://www.dassant.com/products So the SEO in me states the obvious: We need a 301 redirect stat! Unfortunately, our developer went MIA and I am having the hardest time getting a 301 implemented. After some research I found the code that I need to paste into the PHP (for this specific page): Header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
Technical SEO | | EssEEmily
Header( "Location: http://www.dassant.com/products" );
?> However, when I paste it in, upload and refresh the page, I get these error messages in the (multiple) browsers I use. (See attached) http://imgur.com/a/1lar5 With my limited knowledge I can't find these supposed other redirects so I'm stumped. Can anyone shed some light? Thank you in advance! 1lar50
