URL Going Over the Last Page of Pagination - Post Webinar Discussion
-
**Discussion Question: **Lets say you have 33 pages of paginated content but someone lands on page 34+, what do you do?
I just setup a variable on my site so when someone lands on a page that is over the page count they are redirected to the last page of the paginated content. My reasoning is the user is looking for the last page, so why not redirect them to it?
Now I just saw in the latest webinar on ecommerce (by Everett Sizemore) that he recommends a 404… should I switch? Why a 404?
Again, what do you guys do when you encounter this situation?
-
I second that opinion about Everett's webinar Nathan. It was awesome. Thumbs Up to you Everett.
-
Ah perfect! Thanks for the recommendation on the 302.
I got more out of todays webinar than any other seomoz webinar to date. Great job.
-
Hey Nathan,
I think your idea is great, though maybe a 302 would be better. If the amount of paginated pages are constantly going up and down those 301s may not be very "permanent".
But I agree that redirecting to the last "real" page in the set is a better solution than the one I recommended if the developer can handle that coding.
Thanks for sharing!

What are best page titles for sub-domain pages?
Hi Moz communtity, Let's say a website has multiple sub-domains with hundreds and thousands of pages. Generally we will be mentioning "primary keyword & "brand name" on every page of website. Can we do same on all pages of sub-domains to increase the authority of website for this primary keyword in Google? Or it gonna end up as negative impact if Google consider as duplicate content being mentioned same keyword and brand name on every page even on website and all pages of sub domains? Thanks

Are there any negative effects to using a 301 redirect from a page to another internal page?
For example, from http://www.dog.com/toys to http://www.dog.com/chew-toys. In my situation, the main purpose of the 301 redirect is to replace the page with a new internal page that has a better optimized URL. This will be executed across multiple pages (about 20). None of these pages hold any search rankings but do carry a decent amount of page authority.

Canonical URL's - Do they need to be on the "pointed at" page?
My understanding is that they are only required on the "pointing pages" however I've recently heard otherwise.

High number of items per page or low number with more category pages?
In SEO terms, what would be the best method: High number of items per page or low number with more pages? For example, this category listing here: http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/90/fsx-civil-aircraft/ It has 10 items per page. Would there be any benefit of changing a listing like that to 20 items in order to decrease the number of pages in the category? Also, what other ways could you increase the SEO of category listings like that?
