What would cause a drastic drop in pages crawled per day?
-
The site didn't go down.
There were no drop in rankings, or traffic.
But we went from averaging 150,000 pages crawled per day, to ~1000 pages crawled per day.
We're now back up to ~100,000 crawled per day, but we went more than a week with only 1000 pages being crawled daily.
The question is, what could cause this drastic (but temporary) reduction in pages crawled?
-
I wish that were the case, but the site wasn't down.
I looked into the errors, they were redirecting to a subdomain that no longer exists.
-
So several times in one month the entire site couldn't be reached. That's pretty significant. Personally I don't have any clients with that many down-times so can only assume that's the cause or at least a partial cause. And more important, a red flag that would prompt me to find a better hosting provider if it were my site.
-
The drop happened March 28th.
There was a "domain name not found" on march 30th (two more on the 22nd, 18th, 12th, and 10th)
-
There could be several factors. When did it occur? Did you see any other crawl errors reported? And unfortunately, the other unknown comes from the fact that Google's own system is both far from perfect and sometimes crawl volume is affected by their own system.
Unless I see crawl errors or an increase in pages not found during or leading up to that period, or more important, see a corresponding significant drop in organic traffic, personally I just chalk it up to the complexity of the web.

Hi Alan!
There were no spikes in kb per day or time spent downloading a page.

Have you checked Google Webmaster Tools for crawl errors and other metrics? I had a client recently who had a severe slowdown in their server network which showed up on page crawl speed time as a huge spike - pages loading five times slower than normal. They subsequently had a dip in pages crawled due to the bottleneck.

Menu interlinking Pages
Hello, I have my most important pages in my menu. Those pages are present on all my pages because they are on the menu. Are those pages considered to be linking between each other because they are in the menu or should I create links between those pages in my text if I want them to link with each other ?

Crawl Issue for Deleted Pages
Hi, sometimes, I just delete a page and not necessarily want to make a 404 to another page. So Google Webmaster Tools shows me 108 'not found' pages under 'Crawling Errors'. Is that a problem for my site?

Can I ignore this with good conscience?
Shall I make 404 to my homepage? I am confused and would like to hear your opinion on this. Best, Robin0 -
NoIndex Purchase Page
We ran a ScreamingFrog report of one of our websites and found that there are thousands of instances of a single page with a different URL parameter, for example: purchase.cfm?id=1234
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | ErnieB
purchase.cfm?id=1235
purchase.cfm?id=1236
purchase.cfm?id=1237 and we do not need purchase.cfm to be indexed for any reason as there is practically no content on that page to begin with, but it's just part of the purchase steps in our website. What is the best way to deal with this for Google & SEO? Should we do a Meta NoIndex of this purchase.cfm page? Thank you.0 -

Does it make a difference? Thanks! Ryan

Duplicated Pages and Forums
Does duplicate content hurt that particular duplicated content, or the entire site? There are some parts of my site that I don’t care about getting high rankings on search engines. For example, I have a forum and there are certain links that only logged in people can see. If you aren’t logged in, they will take you to a page where it tells u to log in. google, obviously not logged in, interprets this as lots and lots of the same duplicated page. Should I just leave it alone cause I dont care if those pages makes it to search engines. Will it not hurt the entire site? For example, can my homepage search rankings decrase? That leads to my next question. What is the best way to optimize a forum? Whenever someone posts a new post, it seems another url for the same forum thread is created..... which is obviously duplicated….in other words, if like 20 people post on a thread, i believe my site adds 20 urls for that page...anyone know how to fix this?

Could large number of "not selected" pages cause a penalty?
My site was penalized for specific pages in the UK On July 28 (corresponding with a Panda update). I cleaned up my website and wrote to Google and they responded that "no manual spam actions had been taken". The only other thing I can think of is that we suffered an automatic penalty. I am having problems with my sitemap and it is indexing many error pages, empty pages, etc... According to our index status we have 2,679,794 not selected pages and 36,168 total indexed. Could this have been what caused the error? (If you have any articles to back up your answers that would be greatly appreciate) Thanks!

Are links to on-page content crawled / have any effect on page rank?
Lets say I have a really long article that begins with links to anchors on the same page. E.g., Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc, allowing the user to scroll down to different content. There are also other links on this page that link to other pages. A few questions: Googlebot arrives on the page. Does it crawl links that point to anchors on the same page? When link juice is divided among all the links on the page, do these links count and page rank is then lost? Thanks!
