How to move many domains form an address to another?
-
We need to move a site from a domain to another one, and there are also hundreds or even thousands of subdomains to move.
What would be the best practise to do it in order to save at least some of the visibility in search results?
-
The only consequence is that a 301 will pass most but not all of the link juice through to the new page.
It is quite common after site redesigns etc to have lots of 301's in place.
You may want to check out the Web Site Migration Guide blog post, it is extremely comprehensive and certainly worth a read before you embark on the transfer process.

Thank you Justin, you are right and that's the way we've planned to proceed.
I'm just wondering what kind of consequences it might cause if there are suddenly plenty of 301 redirections.

Your best bet is to do a 301 redirect from the old domains to the new one.
A 301 will preserve most but not all of the link weighting etc from the old domain to the new one.
Before you redirect the domain, I would personally check it thru Open Site Explorer and if the domain has a questionable back link profile you may consider not redirecting it to the new site as as well as a 301 will take over the good as well as the bad.
If the site structure and URLs on sub pages change you may want to consider doing page by page redirects (ie olddomain/page1.html -> newdomain/pagexx.html) depending on how important or valuable the existing pages were to you in the SERPs. Page by page is the best route although much more time consuming than domain level redirects.
SEOmoz have a best practices guide on redirects which covers pretty much all you need to know
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirectionI hope that helps

URL redirecting domains
Hi Is there anything wrong/dangerous forwarding a clutch of domains to a sub page (landing page) on a different domain ? Say Brand X buys Brand Z and wants to close down Brand Z site but have Brand Z domain fwd to a landing page (explaining the company acquisition) on Brand X site. In addition Brand Z had a few related but unused domains forwarding to Brand Z doman & now also wants those fwd'd to the new landing page on brand X Since the reasons for doing this forwarding are legitimate company reasons relating to an acquisition i would have thought it should be ok but can anyone think of a reason why could be bad since i remember in the old days peeps used to redirect domains for seo reasons so worried fwd'ing a load of domains could cause some sort of negative flag with big G ? Also do domain redirects transfer the authority/juice from the old site/domain to the new destination page (new landing page on brand x site) similar to how a 301 redirect works ? Many Thanks Dan

Removing an Old Address Company Moved
Hi there we have a new client who moved their offices. They have created many new listings but they still have some old listings out there that need to be deleted with the old address. And also update some old listings with the new address. Question, what would be the approach for this? Use a third party like Yext? Is there something cheaper than $400 per client? Or do it myself? I already started running into issues, the Yahoo wouldn't let me claim it, I can foresee some issues. For example I am sure Citygrid will do what they have done to other client.Trying to upsale my client instead of just changing their address when they call to verify. PS How many hours would you allot for a project like this? Thanks for the input.

Moving to Dynamic IP
Hi all, We are going to use CDN with geographically distributed IPs. However the website has strong positions in local search in UK and in regular search for geo kwds. Is it possible that with moving to from UK static IP to dynamic IPs can affect positions in Google? Thanks, Jane

Domain "Forwarded"?
Hi SEOMoz! The company I work for has a website, www.accupos.com, but they also have an old domain which is not used anymore called http://accuposretail.com/ These two sites had duplicate content so I requested the OLD site (http://accuposretail.com/) be redirected to accupos.com to eliminate the dupe content. Unfortunately, I do not understand completely what happened but when they performed this forwarding the accuposretail.com URL is still in use. Now it just displays EXACTLY what accupos.com displays and not something similar. The tech team told me it is forwarded but I can't help but see the URL still in the search box on top. Is this unacceptable? The actual URL has to forward and change to the accupos.com URL in order to not be duplicate content, correct? I have limited experience in this. Please let me know if we are good to go, or if I need to tell them more action is required. Thanks! Derek M

How do i deal with duplicate content on the same domain?
I'm trying to find out if there's a way we can combat similar content on different pages on the same site, without having to re write the whole lot? Any ideas?

Moving domain.com to subdomain.domain.com
Hi, I like to do something, but first like to take some opinions from seomoz. My question is: 1. I have a domain: brandtrends.com and i like to move this from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com because: brandtrends.com is on the position #15 on the second page of SERP for my "brand" keyword. I like to move it under trends.brand.com but all inbound-links are @brandtrends.com What do you thing, if i move permanently 301 from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com does it rank under brand.com on the 1st page of SERP..? like to rank trends.brand.com under brand.com on results page...!!! I have the backlinks of brandtrends.com on my hands too, should i leave the inbound links @brandtrends.com and the new ones i build with trends.brand.com or should i change the inbound links from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com Hope you got it! THanks
