Do you have to disclose an affiliate code?
-
If I put an affiliate code, which will get me commission if someone purchases after clicking my link, do I have to disclose it is an affiliate code?
-
It is required that affiliates with a site do list on the site somewhere that you may get a commission for items purchased from links on your site and that it does contain Affiliate links. If you put this in your tems of service under disclosure Should be fine. If you want to be totally honest and upfront with your Visitors you could also put a mention of it in your about me section And ensure your visitors that even though you may get a commission If someone makes a purchase from a link on your site that you would Never endorse a product unless you believed in it 100%. Or you Could only promote products and services that you actually do use Yourself. And disclose that as well. The more upfront and honest you are online the better off you will be.

Well this isn't a technical question now, is it?
Interesting. I am not a lawyer but it looks like it even applies to those who are not located in the U.S. but doing business with any American company.
Apparently, we are now supposed to disclose it. It doesn't say anything about disclosing a code tho. (Maybe) You could just add this to your Site Terms and inform the visitor that you have affiliate links on the site.
Edit: I just noticed that article is quite old. How did we never hear anything about this?

Thanks, but then what is this article discussing regarding the FTC law about affiliate codes?: http://www.amnavigator.com/blog/2009/11/30/ftc-on-guidelines-affiliate-disclosures-compliance/

You can use a redirect script to hide that code but when they click on the link, they will most likely see it in address bar. It still helps.
You will basically create something like domainx.com/link and it will redirect to your actual affiliate link.
Either learn how to redirect manually using .htaccess or google "redirection script".

Can my affiliate subdomain hurt in any way?
Hello everyone, My main website is: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com Whereas the above site's related "affiliate" website is located on the subdomain below: http://affiliates.virtualsheetmusic.com I was wondering if having that "affiliate section" on a subdomain could affect the main website negatively in some way... or would be better to put it in a sub-folder on the main website, or even on a totally different domain. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Status Codes - Deleted URLs
Hi I have a dev team 'cleaning' their database and from what I can tell deleting old URL's - which they say are not in use. I don't have much visibility on how our URLs are managed in the back end of the site, but my concern is these URLs should never be deleted, they should have a 301, 404 or 410. This includes product pages no longer available and category pages - my concern is losing authority. Am I worrying over nothing or is this a big issue?

GWT does not play nice with 410 status code approach to expire content? Use 301s?
We have been diligently managing our index size in Google for our sites and are returning a 410 status code for pages that we no longer consider "up-to-date" but still carry value for users to access to have Google remove them from our index to keep it lean. However we have been receiving GWT warning across sites because of the 410 status codes Google is encountering which makes us nervous that Google could interpret this approach as a lack of quality of our site. Does anyone have a view if the 410 approach is the right approach for the given example or if we should consider maybe simply using 301s or another status code to keep our GWT errors clean? Further notes there is hardly ever any link juice being sent to those pages so it is not like we are missing out on that the pages for which we return 410 are also marked as noindex and nofollow

Best procedure for distributing identical content about your company/site for affiliates to use?
When dealing with affiliate websites, whereby you send them a stock standard bio or info on your company for them to use on their sites, what is best practice? Is is OK to have multiple websites all linking to you with pages that contain the same content? Should I ask them to implement canonical or no-index tags for those particular pages? Should I ask them to rewrite the content (which may be impractical or they're unwilling to do)? Thanks

Any ideas for easy code to get rankings live?
I'm interested in gathering some further data for my site. What I would like to do is as well as collecting the search Keyword for users coming to my site, I would also like to gather the search engine position for that keyword LIVE - IE what is the current position of that keyword in the SE at the time the user put in their search. This data will be really useful when digging down on my analysis. Does anyone have any simple ideas of how you would go about implimenting this? Many thanks
