2 similar websites targetting different countries
-
I have a website that has a .com.au extension running on zencart.
If I load up the exact same wesbite (with the same website name) on the .com, will my .com.au be penalised by Google?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Allen,
So you have your .com.au that is set to target Australia and you want a .com which will have the same content and will target some other country?
All you need to do is implement the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tags - http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077
If you implement those tags your sites will not experience duplicate content issues.
Implementing the Rel=canonical will result in only one of our sites ranking, with the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tags both your sites have a chance to rank in the respective countries.
Thanks,
Carlos

A bit tricky.
International SEO would mean targeting the audience via the domain extensions and hosting the domain in the target country. It would mean using the language metatag and more.
Rel=canonical is now available across domains so you can use that tag to attribute content to the original site. That way there is no risk to be penalized.
You can go through this: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday

A little confused question so let me explain what I understand from this and then answer to you accordingly.
I think you mean to say that you have one website that is example.com.au and that is available on zen cart... and you are asking what if you load the same website on a .com domain so will your website get penalized in Google?
If this is exactly what you are asking then let me logically go for it.... duplicate content has no penalty but Google didn’t like it and that is why does not promote the duplicated content against the unique one...
So as far as the penalization is concern, I don’t think so but you might see a fluctuation in rankings and most probably you might not see good rankings for .com version as it will be the copied content!

Measuring the size of a competitors website?
I think our website is too big, far too many indexed pages. I'd like to do some research on how big our competitors' websites are (how many indexed pages). Is there a way to do this? Cheers, Rhys

2 sites versus a subdomain: Which is better?
I have a client that sponsors a couple of events during the year. They currently have pages within a single website for these events but are interested in creating a separate website so they can brand the events differently. I'm not sure this is the most effective way to do it for fear of losing the "google juice" already there for these pages. Here's what I'm thinking is a better strategy: 1) Host the content both on the main domain and the sub-domain2) Make sure there is a tag on each page of the sub-domain version that points to the main version. That will give them the branding they are seeking while pushing all juice across to the main domain. What are your thoughts?

Does a country specific TLD implicitly influence the full country name for keyword matching?
[Hypothetical situation - domain, country and industry changed] Let's say I have registered http://mybrandname.hk (i.e. Hong Kong) and my goal is to reach people in all global locations searching for Hong Kong hotels. The target audience will almost always put "Hong Kong" into their query, e.g. they might search for "Marriott Hotel Hong Kong". Does the .hk TLD implicitly give me a match for "Hong Kong" or would I structure my URLs such that all hotel info pages fall under a top level subdirectory "hong-kong". i.e. is it enough to have a structure like: http://mybrandname.hk/hotel/marriott Or should I have it like: http://mybrandname.hk/hong-kong/hotel/marriott ? It is safe to assume that other on- and off-page best practices will be followed, e.g. links from other Hong Kong sites, some backlinks anchor text including "hong kong", etc. Of course Marriott is just one example, there would be hundreds of hotels in this example.

301 redirect + new website copy
Hi There, We are currently redeveloping our website and we're rewriting and optimising our many of our service pages. I think I may already know the answer but should we apply 301 redirects from our old services pages to the new versions? The content subject matter will be the same on the new versions, they will just be completely reworded. I would be interested to hear your views. Thanks, Stu

The difference between an noindex and nofollow?
What is really the difference between an noindex and nofollow and why/when do you want to use them? Built my first wordpress site and the blog "posts" that make up my home page confuse me....as far as passing link juice to my home url...not sure what I am asking here! How do I use nofollow/noindex or is the issue I should be looking at is 301/canonical. Or neither?
