Tags on blog post
-
I have just ran a report on SEOMOZ and it's came back saying I have over 1000 pages on my website with duplicate content, I thought wow that's not good, however when I looked at the report it was counting duplicate content because I have used more than one tag on a blog post, for example the blog post:
Has the tags
example 1
example 2
example 3
Meaning I have these URLs
www.example.com/blog/tag/example-1
www.example.com/blog/tag/example-2
www.example.com/blog/tag/example-3
All 3 URLs above have the same content as www.example.com/blog-post/ because of the tags, is this a problem?
Thanks

Thanks for all your responses, I never knew wordpress could cause so many issues.
Thanks again.

Hi Gary, I don't. But you might be able to find out on the Yoast site.
Glad to be of help :).

Hi George,
That's fantastic!
I also noticed in the "Taxonomies" tab there is an option "Format" do you know what this is?
Thanks

Hi Gary! I would suggest reading more about configuring for robots here, here, and maybe here (note: this last link uses an older version of the plugin, but provides good information and a lot can be learned by reading the comments too).
Otherwise, if you are using the most recent version of the plugin, you can click on "Titles & Metas" and then on the "Taxonomies" tab. On this tab, if you check the box under the heading for "Tags" for "noindex, follow", it will set all of your Tag archives to noindex, follow.
This will get rid of duplicate content issues for tags, but realize that your "tag" archives will then not be indexed. Regardless of what you decided to do, I suggest reading more at the link above.
I hope this helps!

It's pretty easy to do in the all in one seo plugin. However the Yoast plugin is more comprehensive, if you cannot figure out how to do it you could install the all in one seo plugin then import your settings from than into the Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin.

Hi Rebekah,
Thanks for the link. I have installed the plugin however I can't find the option to noindex tags?
-
Yes - this is a problem. Or at least it can be.
I'd guess you are using wordpress which seems to be the worst offending platform for this. There are a number of plugins that will resolve this issue for you. I am not a wordpress guy (I am sure one will be along). However I believe that the yoast seo plugin is a well respected solution to this issue.

I would no index the tags.
I attached a little image for your review.
I pulled the image from this article on setting up wordpress for SEO: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success
However it's still the best practice for most blog's.

Tags on blogs can lead to duplicate content, so can date archives if you have them. I generally suggest indexing categories but blocking tags and date archives from being followed, and setting options to show a limited amount of posts per category. Block these in robots.txt as well as putting "noindex" and "nofollow" on the pages.
I don't know what CMS you are using for your blog, but if it is Wordpress, Joost's plugin is an excellent plugin to use to help prevent dup content issues and help overall SEO efforts.

What heading tag to use on sidebars and footers
Hello, I have some awareness of how to use H1, H2 and H3.
On-Page Optimization | | kowston
H1 only once per page as the main page heading.
H2's should be subheadings, H3's are sub-sub headings of the and so on.
This structure gives hierarchy and opportunities to use additional keywords in an order of priority. I can clearly understand how this would work in an article but what about other content on the page such as global/frequently repeated elements like sidebars and footers? I see sites - and in particular, I have examed SEO focused sites - that use H3, H4 and H5 in these instances seemingly giving themselves scope to use at least H2 tags as part of the page content and break out of the structure hierarchy when dealing with sidebars and footers. I suppose this could signal theses headings are sections of the page that are less relevant than the main article content but that is just an assumption. I don't know what is correct.0 -
Multiple H1 tags on Squarespace blog page?
Hi All, I use Squarespace and while running my site (https://www.growmassagebusiness.com) through programs am seeing that my blog posts are being seen as one page with multiple H1 tags. I read through the SS help desk and found back in 2015 someone wrote that it's not a bit deal b/c of HTML5 and that the search engines will read each blog post as a sub-page. I'm not so sure about that and wondering what the experts think? If that is screwy then I'm considering possibly making each blog post it's own page rather than using their blog posting format.

Adding Tags in the blog is good or bad?
Hi Friends, In my blog I used to write unique content in between 300 to 450 words and add the related tags up to 15. When I research about adding tags in the blog I come across this video from “Matt Cutts” says Is it worth spending time on creating tags and categories? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A96yDPqa2rs Key Points from Matt Cutts Video are given below: No Need Tags - In general, Google figure out what your post is about, so don't worry too much about it. So my question is do I need to remove all tags from my blog or can I reduce the tag count to 5 alone? Currently I am using 15 tags to each post, is there any dis-advantage by adding tags like this? Let me know your suggestions? Thanks

Noindex, nofollow tags
Hi, I have changed my tags to noindex, nofollow with Yoast. But still, seomoz software showing me warnings and errors for those pages. Also did the same for archive pages example.com/page-2/ and facing the same problems. I need to clear as much errors as I can in the software so I can see the real remaining errors in the website. Help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

How to handle wordpress tags
Hi fellow SEO mozzers, I am getting 'duplicate content' errors when our site is crawled, mainly down to our WordPress blog and how we have handled tags. Currently, they are being crawled and as such are regarded as duplicate pages. I have read several different articles on how to handle tags. Some suggest noindex the tag URL's. Others suggest to optimize them and allow them to be indexed since Google has confirmed they won't penalize a WordPress site for having archive pages that publish and point to the same content. It will select the best link to represent the cluster of links. Over the past few months, nearly 4% of our WordPress traffic have been referred by tag pages listed in search engines. Initially I was going to noindex the tag pages, but going on the above info I wonder should I leave them as they are? Or is the issue that having duplicate content will lead to inefficient crawling? Any views/opinions on how best to handle this?

Why are my tags causing duplicate error?
Hi, When I run an SEO moz crawl it is picking up duplicate errors from my tags. Currently I have these set as domain url/tag/name of the tag. Is this incorrect? Is there anything I can do to stop this being picked up as duplicate pages? Thanks, Eliz

Variable alt tags per page

Title and Heading Tags
Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks
