Htaccess file

I need to redirect the web pages which do not exist to 404 error
the task need to be done in htaccess file.
I am using Linux server.
the webpages I want to redirect is my domain name followed by question mark
I am using the following snippet in my htaccess file, it redirect to bing.com so far,
please tell me how to change the snippet so that it redirect to redirect to 404 error page.
==========================
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.bing.com? [L,R]
-
Use:
ErrorDocument 404 /404.html
where 404.html is your error document page! If the page does not exist then it should return a 404 status code and then automatically redirect to this page.
-
The reason your URL is redirecting to bing.com is you haven't changed the URL from the snippet you found to the URL you actually want to use as your 404 Error Page.
You can create a 404 Error Page and place it on your server. If you have already done this you need to change the URL (http://www.bing.com) in the snippet below to the URL you want to use (e.g. http://www.[yourdomainname].com/404.html).
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.bing.com? [L,R]
That should look more like this:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.[yourdomainname].com/404.html [L,R=301]
-
I am not completely sure I get the question -
two ways I interpreted - the easiest would just be the redirect /? to 404
which would be
redirect 301 /? http://www.404pagehere.com
If you are trying to do a wildcard redirect that is a little harder
RedirectMatch 301 /?/(.*)$ http://www.404pagehere.com
I think the easiest might be
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^foldername/* http://www.pagehere.com/ [R=301,L]Make sure and backup .htaccess before making any changes, as I am not sure what I gave you will fix your specific issue.

RewriteQueryString and .htaccess usage
I'm trying to redirect a whole load of pages which use a query string to a different directory for example. Original URL: example.com/news/post.php?s=2011-01-28-some-text New URL: example.com/blog/post.php?s=2011-01-28-some-text My understanding is that because the url uses query strings I need to use a rewrite rather than the usual redirect 301 etc. I've come up with this but it is not doing the job. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? RewriteEngine On

301 Redirect keep html files on server?
Hello just one quick question which came up in the discussion here: http://moz.com/community/q/take-a-good-amount-of-existing-landing-pages-offline-because-of-low-traffic-cannibalism-and-thin-content When I do 301 redirects where I put together content from 2 pages, should I keep the page/html which redirects on the server? Or should I delete? Or does it make no difference at all?

Converting files from .html to .php or editing .htaccess file
Good day all, I have a bunch of files that are .html and I want to add some .php to them. It seems my 2 options are Convert .html to .php and 301 redirect or add this line of code to my .htaccess file and keep all files that are .html as .html AddType application/x-httpd-php .html My gut is that the 2nd way is better so as not alter any SEO rankings, but wanted to see if anybody had any experience with this line of code in their .htaccess file as definitely don't wan to mess up my entire site 🙂 Thanks for any help! Robots.txt file question? NEver seen this command before
Hey Everyone! Perhaps someone can help me. I came across this command in the robots.txt file of our Canadian corporate domain. I looked around online but can't seem to find a definitive answer (slightly relevant). the command line is as follows: Disallow: /*?* I'm guessing this might have something to do with blocking php string searches on the site?. It might also have something to do with blocking sub-domains, but the "?" mark puzzles me 😞 Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Rob

Dynamically-generated .PDF files, instead of normal pages, indexed by and ranking in Google
Hi, I come across a tough problem. I am working on an online-store website which contains the functionlaity of viewing products details in .PDF format (by the way, the website is built on Joomla CMS), now when I search my site's name in Google, the SERP simply displays my .PDF files in the first couple positions (shown in normal .PDF files format: [PDF]...)and I cannot find the normal pages there on SERP #1 unless I search the full site domain in Google. I really don't want this! Would you please tell me how to figure the problem out and solve it. I can actually remove the corresponding component (Virtuemart) that are in charge of generating the .PDF files. Now I am trying to redirect all the .PDF pages ranking in Google to a 404 page and remove the functionality, I plan to regenerate a sitemap of my site and submit it to Google, will it be working for me? I really appreciate that if you could help solve this problem. Thanks very much. Sincerely SEOmoz Pro Member
