Htaccess file

I need to redirect the web pages which do not exist to 404 error
the task need to be done in htaccess file.
I am using Linux server.
the webpages I want to redirect is my domain name followed by question mark
I am using the following snippet in my htaccess file, it redirect to bing.com so far,
please tell me how to change the snippet so that it redirect to redirect to 404 error page.
==========================
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.bing.com? [L,R]
-
Use:
ErrorDocument 404 /404.html
where 404.html is your error document page! If the page does not exist then it should return a 404 status code and then automatically redirect to this page.

The reason your URL is redirecting to bing.com is you haven't changed the URL from the snippet you found to the URL you actually want to use as your 404 Error Page.
You can create a 404 Error Page and place it on your server. If you have already done this you need to change the URL (http://www.bing.com) in the snippet below to the URL you want to use (e.g. http://www.[yourdomainname].com/404.html).
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.bing.com? [L,R]
That should look more like this:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule .* http://www.[yourdomainname].com/404.html [L,R=301]

I am not completely sure I get the question -
two ways I interpreted - the easiest would just be the redirect /? to 404
which would be
redirect 301 /? http://www.404pagehere.com
If you are trying to do a wildcard redirect that is a little harder
RedirectMatch 301 /?/(.*)$ http://www.404pagehere.com
I think the easiest might be
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^foldername/* http://www.pagehere.com/ [R=301,L]Make sure and backup .htaccess before making any changes, as I am not sure what I gave you will fix your specific issue.

Moving to TLS and disavow file
I'm considering the move to TLS/SSL obviously will be setting up the version in Search Console, do I need to re-upload the disavowal file previously generated before the move? Look forward to your response.

301 Redirect keep html files on server?
Hello just one quick question which came up in the discussion here: http://moz.com/community/q/take-a-good-amount-of-existing-landing-pages-offline-because-of-low-traffic-cannibalism-and-thin-content When I do 301 redirects where I put together content from 2 pages, should I keep the page/html which redirects on the server? Or should I delete? Or does it make no difference at all?

Htaccess code to 301 redirect a folder change
Hi, I need some help to redirect all my site as there was a folder change. eg, the old structure was www.mysite.com/stuff-1/bags.html and I need it to go to the same structure without the "-1" eg: /stuff/bags.html

The "bags.html" will be lots of different products, so this would be a wildcard? What would the htaccess code need to be? Thanks0 -
Question about construction of our sitemap URL in robots.txt file
Hi all, This is a Webmaster/SEO question. This is the sitemap URL currently in our robots.txt file: http://www.ccisolutions.com/sitemap.xml As you can see it leads to a page with two URLs on it. Is this a problem? Wouldn't it be better to list both of those XML files as separate line items in the robots.txt file? Thanks! Dana

Ensuring Assets (PDFs, PowerPoint Files, Word Docs, etc.) are Indexable on Site
Hi there - I'm working on an educational site in which users will be able to search our repository of PDF articles, PowerPoint files, and so on through an on-site search engine. What is the best way to ensure each of these documents/assets are indexable by Google since they technically don't reside on an HTML page....they are just pulled up if the user searches for them? The site itself is just a few pages, but the files, articles, and videos in the repository are in the hundreds. Should I just name and tag them properly and make sure they're all included in an XML site map? Anything else suggested? Thanks very much!

.htaccess and www - non www
Recently I have taken over a website and I made a pretty colossal mistake. The site was properly constructed via .htaccess to a www domain. Typically I roll without it and I made a bad assumption that the .htaccess was not previously set correctly because there were hundreds of fundamental mistakes. After a couple of days I noticed the mistake but some of our new (non www) have picked up some solid links etc. So now I feel that I am in a nightmare of creating redirects etc. So should I switch back to WWW or not? Does it matter at this point?
