What's a really good example of a linkbait-y Category / Subcategory hierarchy?
-
Rand makes a really great point in this 2009 post about the shape of crawl paths:
"#4. Craft navigation / category pages that are worthy of links. If you can make these pages worthy of links and attention, you drive PageRank and crawl priority further down your site's architecture into the content (and signal the engine that ALL your pages are important."
Which makes sense, intuitively, because you'd like link juice to flow directly and undiluted to your money pages. "Here's all my Green Widgets, Roger: they're all right here. While you're at it, here's a related blog post—'5 Ridiculously Awesome Things Every Green Widget Buyer Should Know'—and, oh look! Would you like to see my Blue Widgets as well?"
In practice, though, the Home » Widgets » Green Widgets doesn't sound all that alluring. Useful, absolutely, for UX, but not for getting links. Anyone have some favorite examples of Category / Subcategory hierarchies that do well as link-bait?
Client is a marketing agency dealing in the technical arcana of databases and ad serving, so their money pages won't be as specific as a Green Widget or a Miami Hotel. Their site isn't huge, and the pages will be extensively interlinked, so the emphasis has more to do with link juice / page authority than indexation. But I'm wondering if it could it be smart to replace a generic "Services" category with a KW-rich drop-down menu of "Marketing Solutions" (i.e. 'Increase Customer Retention') and link each landing page to a relevant charcuterie of services, white papers, webinars, case studies, etc., rather than keeping these pages in their respective silos—even as they link horizontally to related services?

Link Building-Focused Examples:
Stephanie Chang has a good SEOMoz article on Creative link building for ecommerce sites that discusses good pages.
Design Examples:
Another article on Smashing Magazine details some beautiful/creative ecommerce designs. While the post is slightly more focused on the design, there are some good examples on there of unique content, too. Both are important in earning links on otherwise boring pages, and will greatly increase user trust and conversions if done well. Here are some other similar articles from Smashing Magazine: Design Showcase Of Creative Online-Shops, 35 Beautiful E-Commerce Websites.
**Seat Geek: **
This is an OK example that comes to mind of content - but they could do better. If you look at a page like http://seatgeek.com/paul-mccartney-tickets/#about, you'll see on the left sidebar that there are tabs for "About Paul McCartney Tickets" which contains some statistics about concert ticket prices, among other things. They could do a better job by improving the design of the page and making it more visually appealing, and by featuring this content above the tickets themselves, rather than hiding it on the about tab like they're currently doing.
Service Sites:
For a Service site... nothing changes. Instead of assisting a user in the decision process between products, you're doing it for services. Make the design look sharp, keep all of those pages 1 click from the homepage unless there's tons of them, and make the pages useful to the user.
Regarding the "Marketing Solutions" concept, I'd say give users two options: browse by service itself, or browse by solution. This satisfies them whether they know what they're looking for or not, and it adds context to the existing service pages.

How new website / blogs can earn backlinks?
Hi, As link wheels, link pyramids and paid links are penalized by google and the only chance to get back links is to earn them. My Question is that with a new website / blog, how a newbie with no relationships with established bloggers, can earn links? Because writing quality contents and detailed posts (e.g. more than 3000 words posts twice a month) still would benefits for those blogs having already traffic to share these contents and in case of new blog, due to very low traffic, it would take months or years to enter in the game. Please propose step by step strategy / plan / footprint for newly born website and marketers. Thanks

Use 301'd Domain for a new campaign
Hello everybody, My company is getting ready to start a new mediacampaign on a very specific subject. The mediacampaign is not directly targeted at our core business, the goal is more to inform our customers about a subject and do a little branding for our company. A nice (and expensive) infographic was built that is going to be the core content of the campaign. We want the infographic to get shared a lot and therefore some of my colleagues want the url to be as short as possible. The idea is to host the infographic on a url on our companysite, but use a 301'd, shorter domainname in our communications. We are going to be getting a lot of links to this empty 301'd domain which does nothing else then 301 to our companysite. I know that linkbuilding to a 301'd domain is an old blackhat tactic, that's the main reason I don't feel good about this. But i can't really find any info on this subject.

Think I'm ready to do some link building. Couple questions.
Getting ready to do some link building. I've got several lists of competitors' links, including a bunch of sites with broken links that would be a great fit to link to us. I've got a capable VA to get started work on reaching out to people. Just curious if this is the right game plan, seems a little simple: For this round of link building I'm thinking all the links would point to my root domain. -Find quality sites/links to go after -Find an email to the owner/webmaster -Have the VA send them a value proposition email(i.e. why it's good fit for all)...or tell them about broken links etc. -Follow up myself when a response is generated. -Hope/verify they link to us. Thanks for the help with the newbie questions.

Backlink reports in OSE, the good and the bad!
Hi all Mozers, I have a couple of questions re the backlink reports in Open Site Explorer. In the introductory video Rand suggests that you can indentify backlinks that are a) Having a positive effect, and b) Having a negative effect on SEO campaigns. Do you identify such links using the domain/page authority of the linking page? Also, we know we have more links than OSE is reporting, does this mean that the links that are not reported are not helping our SEO campaign? Many thanks in advance, much appreciated. Lee

Is it ever the case that a link isn't worth having?
We have been asked to provide a link on our website to a website which provides us with recycled computers to use (our company brand is based around recycling). They have agreed that we will get a reciprocal link back to our site. However the comparisons show that - perhaps this isn't worth it? Our page authority: 39, theirs 26. Our domain authority: 41, theirs 14. Our linking root domains: 41 theirs 7. Finally their links are in the # [li] list [/li] # format I guess my question is threefold: 1 - Will they get significantly more out of this linking opportunity than we will? 2 - Is it worth having the link anyway? (Can it hurt us in any way?). 3 - Does having links in the # [li] list [/li] # format effect the power of the links contained? Thanks.
