My site can be accessed either with or without the www. Does this affect my search positions and do error 301-redirect cause any ill effects?

go into WMT, click on the link for your site
configuration > settings > preferred domain > click the radio button Display URL as WWW

Thanks everyone for your help, no doubt i will return very soon.
As you will appreciate i am quite new to this seo business but learning all the time.

Ok, I think you are talking about the informational information if you are talking about your campaign in SEOmoz Pro. Yes, it is ok to keep your 301 redirects if they are set up correctly, which it sounds like they are.

Thanks George Thanks Robert appreciate your attention.
I can not find where to configure my prefered site i have been on GWMT and searched through my google account and clicked every link but still could not find anything on prefered sites.
With the 301 i don`t think it is an error as such but a redirrect. Should i get rid of the redirrects or would this be ok to keep?

Martin
It should be accessed no matter what is placed in the navigation bar. The thing to look at is whether or not you have a preferred domain set in GWMT. (Google Webmaster Tools). To do that you simply go to GWMT, Dashboard, configuration, settings, and set preferred domain as one or the other.
In terms of an "error 301-redirect" I am not sure what type of error you are showing. Typically, any error would be problematic.
Hope this helps,
Robert

Hello Martin,
Yes, duplicate content can affect your search positions. Since your site can be accessed either with or without the www, you are likely going to have issues with duplicate content. You can fix this either with a 301-redirect or with canonical links.
You can read about 301 redirecting here:
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection
And you can read about canonical links here:
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/canonicalization
Hope this helps!

301 vs 500 Errors for discontinued products
I have a client that has a around 15 "products" (they are pages containing details of the products rather than e-Commerce products) that have been discontinued. The client has suggested 301s but unless the alternative products are replacement products am I correct that we should be using a 500 error?

301 Redirect - Technical Question
I have recently updated a site and for the url's that had changed or were not transferring I set up 301 redirects in the htaccess file as follows This one works - Redirect 301 /industry-sectors http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing But this one doesn't - Redirect 301 /industry-sectors/equine http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing/application/equestrian/ What it does is change the url to this instead http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing/equine ..... which returns a 404 page not found error The server is nginx based server and we have moved from a joomal platform to a wordpress platform I would be grateful for any ideas

301 redirects and OSE
We run a blog/video real estate site (yochicago.com) as one of the venues for sponsored content for our clients looking for off-page SEO and inbound links. I'm working with a client who we've linked to a handful of times in the last few weeks, but I'm not seeing any external links from our site on PRO/OSE. Come to find that our writer has been linking to http://clientsite.com, instead of http://www.clientsite.com, which is the canonical site. I wouldn't have thought that this would make a difference, and about an hour of web research seems to confirm that it shouldn't make a difference, save for losing a little bit of SEO credit. What am I missing? Any input would be appreciated.

Website Grader Report - Permanent Redirect Not Found
Have you ever checked HubSpot's website grader at www.websitegrader.com? I usually notice that the tool gives an error namely "Permanent Redirect Not Found" with below explanation: "Search engines may think www.example.com and example.com are two different sites. You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites. :(Website Grader) Can we trust this tool?

Wordpress 301 redirects
I use wordpress as CMS on a few sites and I noticed that word press automattically places 301s if I change a url etc. I believe it does it by having the following in the .htaccess file: BEGIN WordPress<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine OnRewriteBase /RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-fRewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-dRewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Should I use this? I feel like it limits my control over the 301s.
