My text does not show up in Google
-
Hi there. I've got an urgent question I hope someone can help me with.
I've made a website (www.tonyharrismakingcents.com.au) with a few content pages. I don't get a lot of traffic. All my pages are scrawled and I don't see any errors.
However, when I copy an entire paragraph and Google it, it does not show up in the search results. This makes me believe that the pages are not scrawled correctly. Only when I search for the exact paragraph by putting it between "", the website shows up on the results page.
What can be the reason for this?
Thanks for your help..It's much appreciated.

Hi Ryan
Thanks for your honest feedback. It's a good reality check and I completely agree with what you are saying. I guess I know the basic theory but fail to implement it. The SEOMoz beginners guide will be a good start...

After examining your web page, there are too many issues to list in a Q&A. A few examples:
1. Your page has an H1 tag "First home buyers" which is great, but the H1 tag is not visible on the page. This is a serious issue as you are presenting different content to users then search engines, which is often the cause of a penalty.
2. Your page title is "First home buyers" but the text is not used a single time in content. It is used in the URL and bread crumbs, but not once in content.
3. Your header image shows words. Search engines cannot "read" images. Yes, OCR is a valid technology but it is not used to index web content. Text should almost always be presented as html text. Doing such provides a better user experience, easier site maintenance and is better for search crawlers as well. The only time I would ever choose to present text in an image is if a very specific font was required.
There are numerous other issues as well. You have a very basic WordPress site. WP is a great platform to build a site upon, but the site is not professionally developed and you will have issues attempting to compete in search rankings against better designed sites.
Also, please forgive the harshness here but, your content is exceptionally poor. I can see the content is unique which means you likely wrote it, but ask yourself this question: If someone searches for "first home buyers" on Google.com.au and finds your article, will that user think "wow! This is exactly what I wanted!" or are they more likely to think "this is crap" and hit the back button on their browser and look for another site.
You offer a total of 161 words which are not even focused in any manner of what is supposed to be the primary topic of the page. This page is a perfect example of what search engines wish to filter out of search results. Other then an exact text match in quotes, this page should simply not rank.

Hi Ryan
Here it is..
You should never give up purchasing property. You have every right to start living your own Australian dream. Just like the older generation has done before you. But you’ll need to know how to do it the right way. The more knowledge you have about the mortgage process, the better.
And this is the page URL: http://tonyharrismakingcents.com.au/first-home-buyers/
-
I searched for the following sentence in Google.com.au: Tony Harris loves to share his finance and property knowledge and therefore he has given birth to the Tony Harris MakingCents website building on his belief that people need a trusted source of information.
Your site ranks #2. It is outranked by your Facebook page which has the same text. The rankings make sense.
Please provide the text phrase you used previously along with the target page URL.

Thanks Mat. I will do that. And you are right, I don't have any links yet. I need to work on that!!
-
Thanks Ryan for taking the time to respond.
It's just that the paragraph text I'm testing this with is very long and specific. So when it doesn't show up than it makes me worried that the website gets penalized or that there is something wrong.
I guess I just have to be patient (the website is quite new) and focus more on getting the optimization rights. Any feedback on how to improve the SEO for this website is much appreciated!
Thanks again!

I think that your problem is that you have no links pointing to your site. Literally - None.
Links are one of the main means that search engines like Google use to determine the importance of a website. The logic goes that a site that has authority sites linking to it must in itself be useful.
Your site is in a competitive niche and needs to demonstrate that it is worthy of appearing above the other sites in that niche. Having other sites link to you is a vital part of that.
Read this chapter of the seomoz beginners guide http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links - this explains what you need to do fairly well. I'd also suggest reading the rest of that guide whilst you are there as it will really help you out.
Good luck.

If you search for a page on your site by using a phrase enclosed in quotes, and Google returns the page as a result, then your page has clearly been crawled and indexed.
Your issue is you expect to rank higher for the paragraph / phrase. To do such involves optimization. The question Google asks is, based on 200+ factors which indexed page is most likely to satisfy a user who uses the keyword phrase as a search query.
Your page having the exact matching text offers a strong relevancy boost, but there are other factors.

How to deal with hundreds of externally-generated images with no alt text?
Hi all This is a good one. I work for a webdev company who has clients in the transport industry. Part of our work on their sites involves pulling in transport-related offers from a feed. This includes both text and images, which our site template turns into viewable pages. The problem is that Moz has flagged that these images don't come with alt text, and there are _hundreds and hundreds of them. _I can't add alt text to them all, there just isn't the time or resources. Besides, the list is updated frequently, and new images are pulled in. So... what do? Would it be prudent to noindex them all by default setting? I'm stuck! Many thanks,

Content on product category pages - does Google care?
Hi All, I've always been unsure about the importance of content on product category pages. Nobody reads it. If you search for "living room chairs", you're just going to want to see a big list of living room chairs - not read content about living room chairs, how to choose one, etc. On virtually any ecommerce site, category pages have a paragraph or two of total bla-bla. Does this have any impact on search rankings? More specifically, will Googlebot see content on how to choose a living room chair and say "Yes! This is really helpful content"? Or, will it realize that the searcher intent on this keyword is really just to see a list of chairs, and ignore this content - or at least downplay its importance? WDTY?

HTTPS, free certificates and Google seo
As we all know, Google decided to give some weight in rankings to encrypted sites. SSL certificate providers are quite a lot out there, but there is also a free alternative (Let’s Encrypt). I've been going over some of these services and compared Godaddy's and the above certificates, and there isn't much of a difference. The question is: using a free certificate would have the same effect as a paid one? I would rather pay for one than be punished for using a free one, but free would be good too.

Is there a benefit to hiding words from Google on ecommerce sites?
I think we all know that ecommerce sites have a lot of repeating functional texts on them. Is there a benefit from hiding this text from Google's crawler? Take this page for example, http://storage3.static.itmages.com/i/16/0805/h_1470425505_1090542_224cc344d4.png Some of the most dense words on the page are "Add to cart", "Add to Wishlist", "New", and "Sale". Is there any benefit to hiding those words from Google? The method of hiding I am talking about is not cloaking, but this, https://www.google.com/support/enterprise/static/gsa/docs/admin/70/gsa_doc_set/admin_crawl/preparing.html#1076243 using the google:off index tag. So the content will be there still, but it will not be indexed.

Help Please! - Anchor Text in the Menu
Hi everyone, I am a SEOMOZ newbie and I have been learning about SEO for a while now whilst working on my site - lockcity.co.uk - I already understood the importance of anchor text but was amazed to learn how google only count the anchor text used in the first link (http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/anchor-text). My questions are - does this rule still apply? and if so do the menus really count as the first link? If I went on this approach, this would make my menus too long for e.g. on my 'Auto Locksmith' page, my targetted keywords are 'Auto Locksmith' but also the town keywords need to be included. I really thought I had this covered on the home page by making sure the anchor text and alt text were keyword relevant to the link, but looks like Ive been missing out on an opportunity. Our business is slightly complicated in that the 25 mile radius we cover includes 4 different regions - therefore I feel like I always have to get these keywords in as well to make sure we get traffic from our area. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Does show/hide element with javascript impact SEO
Hi I am developing an ecommerce site and want to place text on all category and home page. The challenge is that 300 words of text for the pages does not fit into the design appropriately especially on the home page. If I were to use a show/hide element with javascript would this be seen as spam or a trick to the search engines. I do not think it is spam as it will be actual content for the site and the visitor can view it if they click on the show button. Would love to hear your thoughts?

Confirmation regarding canonical and syndication google tags
Hi, We are in the process of improving our CMS upstream to resolve our duplicate content issues. We were hit pretty hard by the Panda update. One of the steps we have taken is implementation of the canonical link tag across all domains in our site. You see, we are a news release service with muliple channels and websites to represent each. The problem is that a client will submit a release and in many cases the news item is relevant to multiple channels I.E. multiple websites under the same IP range. Site Examples:
On-Page Optimization | | jarrett.mackay
www.hotelnewsresource.com www.restaurantnewsresource.com
www.travelindustrywire.com From a user perspective, it makes sense that they should be able to access the article from the site they are browsing without being redirected to the site we feel carries the most relevance. We hope the canconical tag will resolve this issue for us. I have also read about the syndication tag and was looking for feedback or recommendations if we should implement that also, but it may be overkill as the two tags objectives seem to be similar. I guess my first question is if the syndication tag is only used by Google News. Secondly, and a little off topic is that we also offer an API and like many other sites, I have read, our content partners are now doing better in primary and long tail rankings even thought we are the original source. My assumption is that we should modify the API to force using both caconical and syndication tags as well. Lastly, I´m curious if anyone has tested the original source tag and if we should implement that as well. Thanks everyone. Jarrett0
